Skal Labissiere named Co-SEC Freshman of the Week

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

In what's become a typically award for Kentucky Wildcats to win, freshman forward Skal Labissiere was named the Co-SEC Freshman of the Week. He shared the award with LSU freshman guard Antonio Blakeney.

Labissiere, a 6-foot-11, 225-pound forward from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, led Kentucky team to a pair of wins in the opening weekend of action. He averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game and 3.0 blocks per game for the week. In the opener against Albany, Labissiere posted nine points, five rebounds and a team-high four blocks.

But it was against NJIT on Saturday night what Skal really showed what he's capable of. Labissiere exploded with a 10-for-12 performance from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe for a 26-point performance and showed the world why many expect him to be one of the first players selected in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Skal was edged out by Mississippi State’s Gavin Ware for the SEC Player of the Week after Ware scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to collect his 14th career double-double as Mississippi State rallied for a 106-88 win over Eastern Washington.
