The Auburn Tigers have been arguably the most disappointing team in college football this season, and it's only getting worse.
That's because the team has dismissed star wide receiver D'haquille 'Duke' Williams, head coach Gus Malzahn announced Monday night.
"When individuals fail to meet the expectations of our program, there has to be consequences," Malzahn said. "I gave D’haquille the chance to prove himself. I am disappointed that it did not work out."
Jay Tate of Rivals.com reports that Williams was dismissed from the team Monday after an off-the-field incident at a local nightclub during the weekend. The talented but troubled receiver was already on thin ice with the coaching staff, and this appears to have been the last straw.
Williams had 12 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown in five games this season. He had 45 catches for 730 yards and five touchdowns last season after arriving as a big-time junior college transfer. He was suspended before the Outback Bowl last season for a violation of team rules, but opted to return to school and bypass the 2015 NFL Draft.
With the Kentucky Wildcats set to host Auburn next week, this continues to look like a game UK has a very good shot of winning and may even be favored in, despite last week's near setback to EKU.
