Postmortem: Kentucky rides a dominant first half to Victory

While Commonwealth Stadium is fitted for the Air Raid sirens to get all the work, the bells on third down are the ones getting worn out.

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

Kentucky spent the last two weeks eager to get back on the field after a heartbreaker in the swamp.  The stakes for today's game were very high as the ‘Cats needed to end a disheartening 17-game SEC losing streak.  The Big Blue Nation showed up well for the game with the only sparse section being the upper deck Vandy section.  Big Blue Nation was looking forward to their ‘Cats delivering the message that they were a legitimate SEC threat.

Vanderbilt would begin the game getting the ball and in a bit of foreshadowing they were forced quickly into a punt.  The kick landed at the one yard line and the ‘Cats offense looked to be in trouble right off the bat.  After one first down the ‘Cats found themselves in a tough spot on the 10 in a 3rd and 11 situation.  With Vanderbilt in great secondary coverage, Towles pulled it down and ran for 15 yards to convert and keep the drive alive.

Kentucky would end up punching it in on a controversial Ryan Timmons reception capping off a 13-play, 99 yard drive with Towles going 9/9 for 77 yards and seven different people catching balls on the drive.  It was a very impressive drive and Towles looked like a top tier SEC QB.  Unfortunately, it was full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The feeling was this was the beginning of a romp for UK and a party in Lexington.  The ‘Cats defense would force another punt (the 2nd of 8 Vandy punts on the day) but on the ensuing play Patrick Towles telegraphed a pass as much as you will ever see.  Truth be told he may as well have handed the ball off to a Vandy defender.  Darrius Sims was breaking on the ball before Towles ever released it and had one of the easiest pick six plays you will ever see.

Had Towles noticed, he had Garrett Johnson wide open for a likely touchdown?  Johnson was running a flag play and there was not a defender within 10 yards of him.

Kentucky would tack on a 44-yard field goal from Austin MacGinnis.  They would impressively milk the clock all the way down to inside 10 seconds left in the half on the back of a Towles QB sneak to finish the half with the ‘Cats leading 17-7 at the half.

It marked the fourth consecutive game where the UK defense did not give up a touchdown in the first half.  This had not happened since 1979.  Kentucky essentially dominated the first half and the defense continuously pounded on true freshman Wade Freebeck.  I thought defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot called a magnificent half and constantly put UK in position to frustrate Vandy and forced many errors.

I would like to say that UK came out in the second half, put the game away, and came off scary.  I would like to say that, but it would be a lie.  Kentucky had a great opportunity as they were getting the ball to begin the second half.  A spirit-crushing Touchdown would have been just what the Dr. ordered.  However, a stalled out drive with uninspiring play calling was what happened.

The entire 2nd half would look this way on the offensive perspective sans a clock salting drive to end the game that saw Jo Jo Kemp run the Wildcat offense about seven consecutive times.  It was an impressive showing by Kemp and the offensive line to end the game and the 17 game streak.  While not overly impressive, a win is a win and UK handled the commodores the entire game and won a game they needed to.

The Good, the Bad, and the Fugly

  • Patrick Towles: Towles looked like a wizard on the first drive of the game going 9 for 9 hitting seven different receivers.  After that drive, he went 14-21 for 124 yards and an interception.  Towles also missed several opportunities for a TD and even had a WTF moment when a ghost seemed to knock the ball out of his hand during a pass attempt for a lost fumble.  In addition, Towles dropped the ball as he was scrambling and could have hit Boom Williams for a TD, he missed Garrett Johnson for a huge gain on the pick-six, he missed Ryan Timmons break free down the seam for a TD and overthrew Blake Bone in the end zone with about 9 steps on his defender.  To put it mildly, he was mediocre today and has to be better if we want to get to 5,6, or 7 wins.  To Towles leadership credit, he had this to say when the press tried to interview him. You have to love his leadership:
  • Boom Williams: How good is this guy, he seems to always find open field and makes something out of nothing.  One play comes to mind when he slipped to the flats and Towles hit him, but Boom did not cleanly pull it in.  Instead of a loss, he turned it into a slippery move and a12-yard gain.  He needs to get as many touches as possible and a big reason for the second half lull was his lack of touches, in my opinion.
  • Demarco Robinson: I want to give him some credit right now; I will be the first to admit that I wrote him off as a spectator this year.  I thought with the talent we had he would fade into anonymity.  However, to his credit he has stepped up and become a leader on this offense and punt returns withstanding, is one of our more consistent offensive presences.
  • Braylon Heard:  If it was not clear before, it is now...  Heard is the man in our backfield.  His legs never stop; he chugs through tackles and falls forward.  For years, UK fans have watched opposing running backs do this; it is nice to have one in blue this year.  He is good and we are going to love him.
  • A.J. Stamps: he had another interception today and continues to be waiting in the wings ready to make a big play; you have to love having that pure playmaker in the secondary.
  • Austin MacGinnis:  I think we have found a kicker, I know he missed some chip shots early but he seems to be coming into his own and the best part is he is a sophomore.
  • D.J. Warren:  Warren had some excellent blocks today to go along with his bone jarring reception.
  • Josh Forrest:  I LOVE Forrest, he is a very fast MLB and I love his instincts.  I was particularly impressed with him when Jerron Seymour busted off a 28-yard run, Forrest ran him down quickly. He also nearly decapitated Freebeck once:
  • The Offense:  Let us just call it what it was, the offense was putrid today.  The play calling was uninspiring and outside of Boom, it is hard to be excited about much anything else today.  In a season where explosive plays have been the norm and playing a team that was vulnerable to the explosive play, we sure did a poor job of it capitalizing.  I cannot remember a play more than 20 yards all game and we took very few shots down the field.  The overwhelming majority of play calling consisted of east/west plays.  I do not understand it but it seems like the second half consisted of nothing but trying not to lose versus trying to win.  I was very disappointed with Brown and the offense today.
  • The Bad Boys:  The defense anointed themselves with this moniker and at this point, I cannot argue with it.  They have now gone four consecutive games without giving up a first half TD and they shut the Vandy offense out completely.  Here is a crazy stat; the closest Vanderbilt's offense got to the end zone was the Kentucky 42 yard line.  (They did start one drive at the 35 off a UK fumble but went backwards from there). WOW.  I cannot overstate how impressive that is. Vand UK has performed defensively at a higher level than any UK team I have witnessed and with the youth, it is only going to get better.

The Bottom Line:  While it was not a pretty second half, this is a great win for UK.  It keeps the momentum going and puts a bowl squarely in the crosshairs going forward.  The great thing about a win like this one is that the most important aspect of the team that needs consistency is the defense and they not only continued the roll, they added to it.

There are going to be games where the offense shows up and we light up the scoreboard but without a stout defense, it will not mean much.  While there are many things to criticize, today you have to leave happy with the win and happy with the positives from today.

I know this, we are going to have one ROWDY crowd next Saturday night for the Ol Ball Coach, and if the offense shows up and the defense keeps it up, we could be in for something special.
