The Kentucky Wildcats picked up a commitment yesterday from consensus three star defensive end Jason Strowbridge. The 6'4'' 245 pound Florida resident reportedly chose Kentucky over Tennessee, NC State, Louisville, Miami, and North Carolina. Prior to his commitment yesterday, the 247 Crystal Ball projected him to Miami by 77%. Defensive coordinator DJ Elliot is being credited by Coach Mainord and 247 as his lead recruiter, and I imagine a part of his pitch was the success he's had developing defensive ends for the NFL at Florida State and Kentucky.
Given his frame and current weight, Strowbridge will probably stay a defensive end in the long run following in Za'Darius Smith and Lloyd Tubman's footsteps. Strowbridge makes Kentucky's 15th commitment in the 2015 Class. Being a Florida native, it may be hard for UK to hold onto him until NSD if bigger schools come calling. Yet another reason is given for the team to overachieve on the field in 2014.
Highlight Tape Impressions
Strowbridge is very physical at the point of attack, and shows nice explosion getting off the line of scrimmage. His highlight tape includes some smart plays of him reading screens, suggesting he is a smart and disciplined prospect. He also shows a good motor, displaying effort through blocks to get to the ball carrier. Strowbridge also does a good job using his hands to prevent offensive linemen from blocking him while pass rushing.
Strowbridge's pad level creeps up at times but with his projected frame, as well as the potential he shows being coachable, he has the promise of being a heavy contributor in a few years. Coach Elliot being labeled as his lead recruiter is a very positive sign.
