Baseball great Tony Gwynn has died. Tim Sullivan at the Courier-Journal has a tribute to him.
Tweet of the Morning
RT @JohnLewisTweets: If Calipari really did pay Pierre Henderson-Niles to play for Memphis, that was a pretty terrible investment.

Ira Combs answers the question: Can Mark Stoops can take the Kentucky football team from 2 wins to bowl eligibility?
First and for most [sic] UK can go from a two or even a one win season to bowl eligibility the very next season because it’s already been done not once but twice . Jerry Claiborne took over UK football from Fran Curci in 1982 who had left the program in NCAA shambles with probation penalties to over come . Claiborne red-shirted pretty much the entire freshman signing class that year and went 1 – 10 - 1 then came back in his 2nd year to post a 6 – 5 – 1 season with a Hall of Fame bowl appearance against West Virginia in Birmingham , Ala .
So there you go.

Starting Drew Barker would be a bold move. Well, not really, but in any case, I don't think he's ready to start. Patrick Towles looks more ready to me.

Team Speed Kills says UK gets "One more mulligan":
He's only got one more year to work like this, though, so Stoops had better sell the hell out of it. Kentucky fans may be patient, but they don't fit their stereotype of not caring about football as soon as John Calipari's bunch hit the hardwood for preseason practice. Football fans there might be a bit more patient, but they do want to see regular bowl appearances. The school is spending $110 million to improve Commonwealth Stadium right now. They can see Vanderbilt win nine games in consecutive years and wonder why their own program hasn't done so since the '70s.
I'd say this is probably right. Kentucky fans need to see improvement this season. I expect we will.

UK is loaded again and the favorite in the SEC. Consider:
Kentucky won't go undefeated, probably. But the Wildcats will have a better shot to do it this season than they ever did last season.
True, dat.

Another Azubuike, this time Udoka Azubuike (unrelated to former UK player Kelenna Azubuike) gets a UK offer (2016). Here's some film:
Kid loves contact. Hat tip: NextCats.

- Saturday Down South says the SEC could be left out of the first college football playoff. I don't think it's all that likely.

- Doug McDermott's possible landing spots in the NBA. This kid is going to be an NBA player, no doubt about it. He may not be a superstar, but he's going to be a fine player.
