You may be thinking "What? A game thread? IN MAY???" No, Cat fans, your whiskey has not been spiked, it's true! Tonight at 8 EDT on ESPN2, your Kentucky Wildcats are playing for the program's first ever SEC Championship crown in softball.
Kentucky's trip to the diamond tonight was not easy. Friday the Cats played a nine-inning nail biter against #25 LSU, battling back from a 2-2 tie on a 2 out RBI double from sophomore Sylver Samuel to deliver the W and the Cats' shot at history.
The Wildcat sophomores' have had a phenomenal tournament this week. Soddy Daisy native Kelsey Nunley allowed the Tigers 3 runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Christian Strokes nailed her 7th homer of the season against Tennessee Thursday, while Nikki Sagermann joined the fun with a single. Sagermann, Stokes and Samuel all came into the UT game after getting the ball rolling - actually flying - with multi-hit performances against Mississippi State on Wednesday.
For tonight's match-up, look for Nunley to again be a key player in the circle. UK last faced Georgia a week ago in Athens, where those pesky Bulldogs swept the series by coming out with bats blazing in the first frame and never looking back. We'll need every player to be locked in on defense, and Jobu in a happy bat-blessing mood, so steer clear of his rum tonight, Cat fans, unless you're pouring him a refill.
Until 8 EDT, GO BIG BLUE!
