Alabama Crimson Tide 57 at Kentucky Wildcats 55: Women's Basketball Postmortem

Kentucky is in a serious shooting slump right now, and their SEC season is officially in jeopardy.

I hate to say it, but right now, the women's Kentucky Wildcats basketball team is just not very good. They are shooting the ball extremely poorly, and the object of the game of basketball, or at least one of the two main ones, is to put the ball into the basket. Kentucky is defending well enough to win, but when they simply cannot score.

Kentucky simply cannot keep turning in sub-40% shooting games at home and have any hope of a good season. Shooting is a real problem with this basketball team from everywhere on the floor. Consider these numbers:

  • 38% FG shooting
  • 56% free throw shooting
  • 47% from 2-point range
  • 13% from 3-point range
  • 39.7% effective field goal percentage

Forget turnovers and offensive rebounding percentage — that kind of shooting is an abject fail, and if Kentucky continues to struggle from everywhere shooting the ball like this, they are going to vanish from the national scene.

I didn't get to see the ball game, but I have the numbers right at my fingertips, and they tell me all I need to know about this debacle. Alabama is not a good basketball team, and allowing them to come in and knock off Kentucky at home is one of those bad losses that will hurt an NCAA seed.

  • Kastine Evans is in a really ugly funk, and it's killing the team. She was 0-8 from the field last night, and her last 4 outings have looked like this: 3-10, 2-10, 2-6, 0-8. That's a combined 7-34, or 20% shooting over four games, and she is a starter.

  • It's nice to see Jenee Thompson play better after a terrible outing against Auburn.

  • DeNesha Stallworth is a shadow of her pre-injury self. She contributes, but she just isn't the same player at all. That is understandable, though, a six-week layoff is tough to come back from.

  • Jennifer O'Neil, Evans, Linnae Harper, and Makayla Epps were a combined 0-16.

  • Samarie Walker had a fantastic game. But for her, this would've been a rout. 8-9 shooting, only 2-6 from the line and 7 rebounds, including 4 offensive.

  • Jelleah Sidney had a good game other than shooting the ball, where she was 1-5.

  • Bria Goss also had a good game. She shot the ball well from everywhere, and she has been mired in a shooting slump lately. Nice to see her break out of that.

Right now, Kentucky is in a very rough patch. They are 3 games behind South Carolina Texas A&M in the league and only .500 to boot. Their next game comes against Arkansas on Sunday in Memorial Coliseum, and Arkansas is a much, much better team than Alabama. A performance like this one against the Razorbacks will guarantee a 2-game home losing skid. It's time to "man up," ladies, and play better, because this performance is going to leave a black mark on the record this season.
