The word on the street is that Coach Cal has either offered, or is about to offer, another point guard.

Comes now news from various places, including Ben Roberts of the Lexington Herald-Leader, that John Calipari either has, or is about to offer 2014 point guard Dominic Magee. This would be the fourth point guard that Coach Cal has offered in the 2014 class. Three of them are still outstanding: Tyus Jones, Tyler Ulis, and now Magee, if the word is correct.

Magee right now is ranked only a three-star by Rivals, but that is a mirage. He is unquestionably moving up to at least four-star status and into the Rivals 150. Magee ticks all the boxes as far as the skill set that Calipari covets in a point guard: Size (6'3"), ability to break down defenses, and terrific athleticism.

Magee was thought to be leaning toward Travis Ford's Oklahoma St. team, but a Kentucky offer would undoubtedly reset that. Whether or not he would come to Kentucky if Ulis or Jones do is unknown, but he's exactly the kind of guy that UK would want to have on the roster whether Ulis or Jones come or not.

This undoubtedly reflects Calipari's strategy not to be out of options at any position. He has been caught out in 2010 and 2012 when a couple of dominos didn't fall his way, and he now seems determined to have lots of options at every spot, and as we all know, point guard is a very important position in Kentucky's offense.

It's also possible that this offer, if it does in fact exist or will exist as reported, is designed to put some pressure on Jones and Ulis. If Jones is truly a Duke lean, it probably won't mean as much to him, but Ulis is said to be inclined toward Kentucky and it would mean something significant to him. Keep in mind that this is all speculation by me, I make no claim to have special knowledge of recruiting.

Magee has an awful lot in common with Marquis Teague as a freshman — a touch turnover prone and out of control, but a strong finisher and a terrific athlete with good size for the position. This is definitely one to watch.
