Kentucky Wildcats Morning Quickies: Football Camp Over Edition

Kentucky's summer football "camp" has officially ended, and practice for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers has begun.

Kentucky football

• Bluegrass state report from Varsity Preps. As some have mentioned, it looks like Kentucky's football talent is improving. [Via Hank]

• Secondary size and depth are a big concern this year. Yes, and that likely means some playing time for the more talented, and perhaps even all, the freshmen. That happened last year, too, and it didn't work out well at all. Injuries could put us in a bad place in the secondary pretty quickly.

• The ACC and SEC were the drivers behind moving the UK-UofL game to the end of the season. Judging by our impromptu poll, it was popular among the Blue and White faithful. Judging from this Card Chronicle thread, they seem a little more split about it, but I don't see any signs of peasants with pitchforks.

  All in all, Tom Jurich seems to be the main party pooper. I saw one of U of L's assistants last night praising it on TV. Then a few minutes later I saw Rick Bozich and Eric Crawford wringing their hands over it on TV. That just added to my belief it was a good idea.

  John Clay, however, doesn't prefer the move, but seems okay with it, even defending it to some extent. The poll on John's website, interestingly enough, show roughly the same level of support as ours does.

  Finally, Mike Rutherford at Card Chronicle does a pro/con on the move of the game. I think he hits the high points, really. I would point out that the idea of "national attention" to the Kentucky-Louisville football game has always been a myth. Nobody but Kentucky and Louisville fans care about this game, no matter when they hold it. They care about the basketball game, and for good reason.

• Elijah Sindelar — The next big thing from Kentucky? Some have favorably compared him to Tim Couch. I hope he picks the same alma mater as Tim did.

• Camp over. Now, it's time to prepare for WKU.

• Mark Stoops thinks that not being able to find a single leader at quarterback is a "negative." As I've said before, it's better to pick a QB as soon as possible. The fact that it just wasn't possible isn't good.

• Darian Miller says Neal Brown's pace is "tough" to handle.

Kentucky basketball

• Kentucky and point guard Josh Perkins have parted ways. Kentucky was only interested in him as a backup plan, and that had to show, because he was never offered a ride.

• John Calipari gets no love in the "one game, one coach" hypothetical by Eamonn Brennan.

• KSR reports on an Oscar Combs rumor that the Harrison Twins will be on campus no later than Monday. That would put a lot of this senseless hand-wringing to rest.

• Updated Scout Top 100 for 2014. Emmanuel Mudiay is #3 with Tyus Jones right behind at #4.

• Top 25 X's and O's coaches. First of all, it's by Jeff Goodman, so you should be automatically skeptical of it's value. Second of all, it is behind a paywall, which is another good reason to be skeptical of its value.

• Kansas, Oklahoma St. look to be the class of the Big 12. Good on Travis Ford for all the success he's having with the 'Pokes.

• Andy Katz's 3-point shot.

• Who will be hiring Bruce Pearl after his show-cause expires next year?

• Chris Paul is your new NBPA president. Interesting choice.

• Randall Cobb is practicing despite his injury, but it still seems to be bothering him quite a bit.

• A review of the SEC. Kentucky gets a mention, and a fairly positive one if you consider "maybe next year" positive.
