Slogans and moral victories aside, Mark Stoops and his staff clearly arrived at Kentucky with eyes wide open. That hasn't stopped this staff from holding the team accountable. Improvements this year have taken the form of baby steps and the stats show it.
As I pointed out in my preview of Thursday's game, there is a talent gap between the Bulldogs and the Wildcats, but as many pointed out, this was a winnable game. John Clay tells the story better than I possibly could. The fact is neither team is very good. Mississippi State gave the Wildcats plenty of opportunities to win, but Kentucky's mental mistakes did not allow them to take advantage. Kentucky's defense needs to come out ready to play in the first quarter of every game and I feel that's just not happened except against Louisville and Alabama. I don't count the Miami game. It serves no purpose. I would be surprised if we see the much needed cultural shift before next spring with two Stoops recruiting classes on the roster. There is more than one reason for optimism.
Here's our NCAA stats after this past weekend's games.

As I said last week, our offense stinks and it isn't coaching. It's execution. The dropped passes and the poor throws are not the coaches' fault. With both quarterbacks injured, the offense just isn't getting it done. And, it doesn't help when the receivers can't catch the ball with any consistency. Kentucky can't convert on 3rd down and it shows in our time of possession.
