Kentucky Basketball Recruiting: 2014 SF Stanley Johnson Receives an Offer

2014 small forward Stanley Johnson has an official Kentucky offer, according to 247 Sports. Jerry Meyer of 247 Sports tweeted his suspicions earlier in the week, and Chris Fisher from The Cats Pause confirmed with Johnson ($) that Johnson received a call and offer from John Calipari yesterday. Johnson joins recent class of 2014 offerees Cliff Alexander and Tyus Jones.

Unlike Alexander and Jones, Johnson isn't a slam dunk Top 10 prospect in the 2014 class. 247 Sports rates him a 5* prospect (16th overall). However, other major scouting services like Scout, Rivals and ESPN have him as a 4*. Evan Daniels and company at Scout have him ranked just 40th.

Whatever his ranking, Johnson has a talented game that led him to receive an early offer from Kentucky. Per Johnson, Calipari likened him to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and complimented him on his versatility. The interest is reciprocal, as Johnson had said earlier this summer that Kentucky was on his "must visit" list.

Also of note: Johnson's early offer may also signify that the Kentucky staff believes that Andrew Wiggins, the top player in the 2014 class who happens to play the same position as Johnson, will reclassify to 2013.

Johnson plays for powerhouse high school Mater Dei, famous for alumni such as USC's Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart. In the summers, Johnson plays for the Oakland Soldiers AAU program. Currently Kentucky Wildcat Kyle Wiltjer is an Oakland Soldiers alum, and Calipari has also reached into the Pacific Northwest for current Houston Rocket Terrence Jones. If things break favorably, Johnson may be the next man up on the Kentucky-West Coast Express.
