Shooting guard Wayne Selden, a recruit holding a Kentucky offer, has reclassified to his original class of 2013. Selden was a five-star, top 25 prospect in the 2014 class. In the next iteration of rankings, he will likely slot somewhere similarly in the 2013 rankings.
Selden's name is notable for a few reasons. First, he plays for The Tilton School and BABC AAU and was thus an ex-teammate of incoming freshman and Kentucky signee Nerlens Noel. Interestingly enough, Noel also reclassified back to his original class of 2012, though he waited a lot longer than Selden.
Further, Selden and Noel were Kentucky head coach John Calipari's first official offers in the 2014 and 2013 class, respectively. Calipari extended an offer to the teammates way back in April 2011 after watching them scrimmage at The Tilton School. It's interesting that both have now reclassed; will both end up at Kentucky?
Prior to reclassifying, in an interview with The Cats Pause's Chris Fisher ($), Selden said he will be keeping a close eye on Kentucky, and not just to watch his ex-teammate Noel.
"Definitely going to be watching him play a lot," Selden said. "I like the winning tradition, developing players and getting them ready for the NBA."
But is Kentucky at the top of his list? In another interview with Adam Zagoria, Selden specifically listed a couple other schools not named Kentucky.
Wayne Selden holds offers from pretty much every major program in the nation but says he’s recently been hearing from a couple of bluebloods.
"I’ve been hearing a lot lately from UNC and Kansas," Selden told SNY.tv at the Mary Kline Classic Saturday before helping the Blue underclassmen rout the Read team, 143-122.
He also echoed similar sentiments to Alex Kline of The Recruit Scoop.
He says that UCLA, Florida, Ohio State and Kansas are recruiting him the hardest. Seeing his friend Noel succeed at Kentucky this year, which is more than likely, could certainly impact his recruitment but he remains wide open at the moment.
Do they teach parallelism at The Tilton School? That mirrors comments that Noel made to Recruit Recon last winter (since removed), where Noel cited the five schools recruiting him hardest but didn't mention Kentucky. Don't fret, though: Calipari has proven that if he wants to turn up the heat, prospects will listen.
Selden has yet to narrow down his list from a plethora of offers, but don't be surprised if Kentucky ends up heavily involved. In addition to the blue blood schools above, Selden also lists area schools like Pittsburgh, Boston College, UConn, and Providence. Currently, the Wildcats have offered just one other 2013 shooting guard, Aaron Harrison (Travis / Fort Bend, TX), and have strong interest from James Young (Troy / Troy, MI). Both are heated battles, with Harrison strongly considering Maryland and Young hearing from hometown Michigan State.
It's also worth mentioning that the elite recruit reclassification wheel may not have stopped spinning. The consensus top prospect in the 2014 class, Andrew Wiggins (Huntington Prep / Toronto, ONT), could end up reclassifying as well. Wiggins has been heavily linked to Kentucky and Florida St. (his father's alma mater).
