The Blogpoll results are out today, and somewhat surprisingly to me, the LSU Tigers have been promoted to the top of the list on the strength of their defeat of the Oregon Ducks.
What we have here, it seems to me, is the attack of the "What have you done for me latelys." I can't say I blame that kind of mentality, but my theory about ranking any team is essentially this -- until the team you ranked gets beat, or someone below it displays clear superiority, they stay where they are.
How is it, exactly, that LSU displayed "clear superiority" over either Alabama or Oklahoma? In my narrow and admittedly basketball-centric existence, they did not. LSU looked great defensively, rather questionable (in my apparently limited understanding of the game) on offense, yet managed to jump two teams who took care of admittedly lightweight foes because the Tigers beat a top 5 team. It's a theory, I guess, but I've always been skeptical of it.
With that said, defeating Oregon is impressive, much more so than almost every other team's outing except the Boise St. Broncos, who were impressive in the defeat of the Georgia Bulldogs. Accordingly, they jumped ... oh, wait, they didn't jump at all! Looks like I'm not the only Boise State Denier™ around. Then again, consistency is not a requirement for this line of work.
For your commenting convenience, the final results appear after the jump.
