Futureworld: Who to watch in 2008

New, 4 comments

With little changing these days with Kentucky's top 2007 targets (Moses, Lucas, Patterson), we thought readers might like to see what was up with 2008.

Many fans may have seen updates on Darius Miller, an in-state star, but may not be as familiar with the other names UK is chasing. Here's a primer ...

Top targets for 2008-09

(Forward, Rivals #1) Greg Monroe, 6'10"/226, Louisiana: Everyone and anyone is after the nation's top player. Kentucky has been in there early and often. A tough task with all that competition.

(Forward, #9) Al-Farouq Aminu, 6'8"/210, Georgia: A rising big man from Jodie Meeks' high school in Norcross, Aminu has had a who's who of top coaches at his games recently, including Tubby Smith and Roy Williams, among others.

(Forward, #15) Drew Gordon, 6'8"/235, Calif.: Athletic and ever-improving big man has a list as long as his arm. Tubby has been to see him play several times, indicating perhaps more than a passing interest.

(Center, #27) Phillip Jurick, 6'10"/250, Tennessee: A bruiser of a forward, Jurick visited UK unofficially in December for a game. he is also one of Bruce Pearl's top targets.

(Center, #30) Kenny Frease, 6'11"/255, Ohio: Kentucky has come on strong lately for this big man. Xavier and Ohio State were once thought to be out front, but OSU has cooled. "I'm for sure going to [take a visit to] Kentucky and West Virginia, and I'm going to Michigan State and I'm not sure what else."

(Forward, #37) Darius Miller, 6'6"/215, Kentucky: Perhaps the main target of Tubby & Co., Miller is an athletic swingman and one of the best talents in recent years in the Bluegrass state.

(Center, #42) Ty Walker, 6'11"/200, North Carolina: Despite his thin frame, Walker is getting better and better. UNC is his "dream school," so a lot depends on their interest.

(Guard, #77) Verdell Jones, 6'4"/160, Illinois: A shooting guard with vision and shooting range, Jones is attaracting more and more interest.

(Forward, #90) Carter McMasters, 6'10"/210, Tennessee: A rival of Jurick's, McMasters is thinner but more mobile. Another heavy Volunteer presence to overcome.

(Forward, 3-star NR) Kevin Jones, 6'8"/200, New York: An "under the radar" recruit recently offered by the Cats, Jones was recently named MVP of the Bojangles Shootout tournament after scoring 53 points, with 36 rebounds and seven blocks in three games. One to watch.
