Something wicked this way comes ...

Well, well.  Now Kansas has it's third national championship, the Hall of Fame inductees announced, this player and that has been deservedly fawned over.  Time for the silly season to begin.

First, some accolades.  Congratulations to the Kansas Jayhawks and Memphis Tigers for an entertaining and exciting game.  I'm not going to deconstruct it, what we saw was pretty much what we expected to see.  There were no outrageous calls, no fights, no technicals or ejections or any of that badness.  There was one pretty amazing comeback completed by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Mario Chalmers that put the contest into overtime, and Kansas pretty much controlled the overtime and won the game.  Be sure to stop by SB Nation's Kansas blog, Rock Chalk Talk, and congratulate them on their third national title.  We currently have no Memphis blog, and I frankly don't know any to tell you to visit, so if anyone else does, post them below.

To me, the silly season in College basketball is the four to eight weeks immediately following the national championship game.  That's when all the players who are definitely leaving sign with agents, the coaching carousel starts spinning madly like a top on steroids, angst, arm-twisting, moaning and groaning and gnashing of teeth begins.  I have come to really like this time of the year because of it's uncertainty and surprises, good and bad.  It's the time when the Kelenna Azubuike's of the world go pro, the Shagari Allene's flunk out, the Alex Legion's fly in like a bolt from the blue and the Tubby Smiths split for the tundra of the frozen North.  Anything, and I mean anything can happen now, and the best thing to do if you are a Wildcat fan his grab onto yourself and enjoy the ride.  This is where the season really gets interesting.

So far this morning we have the following unsurprising news:

Okay, now on to more pressing matters, namely, the blast-off for the coaching carousel.  We will start at the beginning with Oklahoma State, where the Golden Goose in the form of T. Boone Pickens has laid a golden egg, all covered with strings.  Tulsa World says that the price of doing business with Bill Self just went up -- way up:
Several sources have confirmed that Oklahoma State officials are prepared to offer Self some big-time bucks in an attempt to entice him to return to coach at his alma mater.

If some reports are even close to being accurate, we're talking funny money here. The latest rumor to surface in coaching circles this weekend was that OSU plans to toss a $6 million signing bonus on the table if it can get Self to agree to a contract that reportedly could pay him at least $3.5 million per season.
I have heard even more than that, to the tune of a 10-years, 40 million dollars, a 10-million dollar longevity bonus and a partridge in a pear tree.  Now, even if it is the lower figure mentioned above, this thing is getting way out of hand.  But the free market being what it is, I can see little to be done.

From the same article, Kansas has reportedly told self that they simply cannot match that kind of money, no matter what:
Inside sources have also confirmed that Perkins has informed Self that there is no way KU has the resources to match what is expected to be a blockbuster deal by OSU.

And Perkins has to know that OSU is ready, willing and able to guarantee every single dollar it offers Self.
So what would you do?  Yes, Kansas is one of the five most attractive jobs in all of college basketball from a tradition and program standpoint, but not when it comes to lucre.  Clearly, the number one job in the land, money wise, is Oklahoma State University, a wholly-owned subsidiary of B.P. Capital Management.  Self, as it is well known, is an alumni of OSU, and so is his wife.

Nobody who was not a Kansas fan would be surprised if Self, or anyone else, took that kind of money.  It isn't like going to the NBA, where coaches often last as little as 6 months.  We are talking crazy, insane dollars to coach a college basketball team at a university that is, at best, a second-tier basketball program and arguably not even that.  There is something all out of proportion here, but quite frankly, what can anyone say?

If OSU makes this offer, they will confirm what everyone already knows -- T. Boone Pickens owns that athletic program -- it is his.  All his, like his dog or his horse, or his athletic director and by extension, the new coach.  There is something very oily and unctuous about the whole affair if it comes to pass as the rumor mill has it going, as though there were something morally reprehensible going on.  Yet when you think about it, it is merely a case of a school with a disproportionate amount of financial resources at its disposal outbidding others for the services of a professional coach.  That has been going on for years, and nobody has said much other than the normal hand-wringing about money in college sports.

But when a school's financial strength is all out of proportion to their position in the hierarchy of college basketball, it will look very disturbing to many college basketball purists.  What can be done?  Should anything be done?  I don't know the answer to either question.  But if Self takes the job, I am sure that his reputation will ... suffer.  Oh, there will be the usual, "But how could anyone turn that down?  Think of his family!"  Heh.  Yeah, the roughly $1.5 million he is making now sure does constitute poverty in this day and age, and that is going to go up to at least 2-point-something no matter what.

Of course, Kentucky fans want to know what will happen if Self somehow finds the OSU job just a little too much like indentured servitude to Satan.  The answer is, we have no idea, but there could be more hurdles to overcome with Gilllispie's MOU than Self's contract, and there is a huge difference in their résumé.  We all think Gillispie is the Cat's meow here in Lexington, but no way does he even remotely compare with Bill Self when it comes to results.  Not even close.  I don't really know if that would matter to B.P. Capital Management, but it should.  Not only that, Kentucky can come up with serious bucks, although I rather doubt if UK would be willing to match an OSU offer of the magnitude of that thrown out by the rumors.  But you have to ask yourself this -- if Self is worth $40 or $50 million, Gillispie is surely worth less, at least right now.  How much less, and would it be too much less?  That is the question.

Gillispie's lack of a contract would also make such a change messy, because the legal effect of an MOU is not as iron-clad as a contract, and a judge may well invalidate parts of it -- like the buyout clause -- or hold them to effect.  People like Pickens are not just going to write a check for the buyout without testing it's legality, should it come to that.  But even if it is upheld, it really is more of a nuisance than a deal-breaker.  There is an awful lot of room between Gillispie's current compensation and what Pickens has in his bank account, and we really do not know how far this man is willing to go to get his way.  He plunked down $165 million just to get to name the athletic director.  That fact aught to give us great pause.

Folks, this will be interesting.  I suppose most UK fans should be pulling for Self to do like the old Steve Miller Band song says, "Go on, take the money and run."  Do we really want that Brinks truck pulling up to the Kraft Center and testing the theory held many Wildcat fans that no amount of coin can tempt Gillispie away from the oh-so-desirable UK job after only one year?

I'm thinking not ...

an even scarier scenario if you ask me...
Boy I've got myself in a tizzy over this this morning.  What if Bill Self takes the job... and Kansas comes after Gillispie?  That seems to be a scenario worth at least some attention, even if it is putting the cart before the horse.  A tradition laden program in the same conference as his friend, a system left behind that Coach G. already understands, and he is closer to home, coaching in a conference he historically has much stronger ties to.  Personally, I hope Bill Self says no because I don't see Gillispie as a Cowboy, but I definitely already know what he looks like in blue with the letters U and K somewhere around him... I just don't want to see their ordeer reversed!!!! By the way, very nice article Tru, now where's my Prozac? :)

I'm not ...
really worried about that.

Kansas can't make the kind of ridiculous offer that OSU can, they've already said as much.  I think UK can hold them off, and unlike Pickens, the prospect of having to pay Gillispie's buyout will daunt them.

No, if OSU gets Self, I don't think we should worry about losing Gillispie to Kansas.  I could be wrong, of course, but Kansas doesn't have the kind of financial wherewithal to just routinely outbid UK.  Not only that, they will have more reservations than Pickens will about making such a raid on a relatively unproven coach for crazy money.

Laettner
Won't get out of his car to pee but defaulting on a $375,000 loan from the Lexington BB&T Bank is another issue :-)

Anyone remember that?

Interesting
My cousin's girlfriend's mother is a real estate agent in Stillwater, and says that Gillespie's wife was in town looking at houses over the weekend.

I really hope that isn't true!

Ok, couldn't help myself :)

Relax guys, no sense fretting over it, lets just see how it plays out.

Won't get many to bite on that one...
...since most of us know that Gillispie is divorced. :)

by Acdixon on Apr 8, 2008 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you wanted some nibbles...
...you could have said that you heard the twin co-eds that Gillispie was at last weekend's kegger with were considering a transfer to OSU and that there was a want ad in the OK St. student paper for a late-night designated driver. THAT would've stirred up the lunatic fringe for sure!

by Acdixon on Apr 8, 2008 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Errr yeah
If the bit about the wife wasn't enough of a give away that I was making a joke, I thought the "Ok I couldn't help myself" would be.

:)

Got it
I knew it was a joke. I just didn't know if you were seeing who would take the bait or not. Then I thought I'd drop some more embellishment.

What about...
Larry Brown. Didn't he say he wanted to come back to coaching a few weeks ago?  Would that make sense to anyone?

by tiger85 on Apr 8, 2008 1:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brown
Larry Brown, although a great, great coach, seems to not be able to run a college program within the limits of the rules.

Both UCLA and Kansas were put on NCAA probation after his coaching stint. I seriously doubt any college program would be interested in him. Of course Georgia hired an outlaw in Jim Harrick, so who knows.

Did anyone see...
Did anyone see the after game comments made by Bill Self made on Tuesday morning? He very much danced around the subject of whether he would be interested in the job. He never said that he wasnt interested in the job, and he said that he "has yet to meet Mr. Pickens," but that he figures that a meeting is imminent.

I dont see Coach G leaving for Kansas, OSU, or... so that everyone knows how much I think of our current coach in contrast to one of our former ones... Louisville. I believe that Clyde will probably use this scare to get a contract that he feel comfortable signing on the table at UK. Nothing like the prospect of losing your services to get some of your demands met.

BINGO!
His package could get real close to 3 mil if push came to shove. For a guy who loves to recruit and try for the best in the country he has seen just what a business card with UK on it can get him in a really short time. I really think he is hooked. He'll get more cash and stay. BCG at UK looks like the time I got handed down a hot rod at 16 and wasn't sure what I had. It took a little bit to realize the power under that hood and after a bit I was one with the car. But from the start I knew I liked it. Just hope he doesn't hit a bridge too.

LOL!....
...and an on-target analogy.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 8, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bridges? We dont need no stinking bridges man!
If Clyde hit a bridge, it would totally decimate not only the bridge but also the fabric of the metal in the bridge would cease to exist.

I mean, the man is obviously smarter than he lets on. Last year he had a contract on the table at TAMU just waiting for his signature, but he somehow knew that Frankenstein, down at now surprisingly mediocre Florida, would reject the job due to his own pride. Then he stays away from College Station long enough to talk to Mitch.

He is clearly ahead of the game, and has not signed a contract because he wants everyone in the front offices to feel the heat of having a rabid fanbase at their throats for not offering a contract to his liking. I am positive that Billy G is not holding out for more money, but rather some principple in the current offered contract has him pulling a power move. He understand KY basketball much better than do many of us evidently, he wants the AD to see who ACTUALLY pulls more weight in the Big Blue Nation.

Not only do I think that Kentucky is a hot rod of funny car proportions, but i believe that we are as safe in the hands of Billy G as if we were being driven by John Force himself.

In the Kingdom of College Basketball, the King is about to go back on His Throne.

That's good stuff right there.

How about that T. Boone? -- You are nothing more than a means to an end for our "King"!  You are being used and abused by one Billy Clyde Gillispie -- aww shucks!

Offer Will Got To Self First, Then Gillispie
No Plan C has been developed (per a Big 12 coach who was at FF).

I think they'll need a Plan C but I don't know.

Actually
Tubby has similar career numbers (72% overall, 69% NCAA, 1 NC-1 FF-4 E8-9 S16 in 17 years) to Bill Self (72% overall, 71% NCAA, 1 NCAA-1 FF-5 E8-6 S16 in 15 years).

Smith's name ...
has been mentioned, but I don't put much credence in it.

Tubby's Tulsa Ties
Friends, my Cherokee Strip sources tell me Tubby is still much revered from his days of success at Tulsa, and would find a warm welcome in Stillwater. The question would be how much of a connection he and his family have made in Minnesota, and what he feels about leaving after only a year. The "I have a corncob stuck where it hurts with OTS written all over it" syndrome is rare even in Kentucky, but it does not exist outside the Commonwealth. Most folks have more sense than to claim in a public forum that they could get hired anywhere to coach basketball before a proven winner like Coach Smith.
Here's a scenario they really like out west - OSU gets Self, so Kansas goes shopping for ... hmmm ... revenge in the person of Billy G!
Thankfully, with all the Kentucky-bred coaches in the SEC these days, the Big Doze will never rival our conference in roundball domanance - but it is food for thought. I won't lose any sleep over any of it, but for those who might, I suggest waiting until all the contracts are signed and dated and filed before assuming any single thing about anyone anywhere. I have my own corncobs from the school of hard knocks that remind me of that reality check. Go Cats! Go Tubby! Go Smooth and Joe in the draft!

He's Well Regarded In Both Oklahoma And Georgia
Not so much in Kentucky.

Tubby and Donna love it in Minnesota. He's there until Social Security checks start.

I think
all the posts are right, T Boone wants his own pet athletic program and he's got it.  All that money's going to go somewhere.  Some coach is going to want it.  Wouldn't it be embarrassing to be dangling that much money and have no one take the bait?

by Byron on Apr 9, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it would definitely be embarrassing...
but does that alleged money apply to everyone or just Bill Self?  I can't see them justifying that kind of salary to just any coach.  It seems that this is their once in a lifetime offer to bring their wayward son home.  I certainly believe Billy G wouldn't get quite that good of an offer because, as great as he is, his stock is simply not that high, not to mention he is not an alum of the school, and is in fact from Texas which is worth at least a 500,000 dollar deduction according to the Boomer Sooner stete code.  I think that if OSU offered this obscene amount to anyone other than Bill Self, they would be more than just tightroping the line of absurdity.

Perspectives
My husband has family in Kansas City, Mo that happen to be HUGE Kansas fans. He called them with congrats after Kansas won the national championship.  After much "whooping it up" my husband's cousin said to him, "We heard that OSU is after your coach (Gillispie)."  To which my husband said, "That's funny. we heard that they were after YOUR coach (Self)."  The Missouri clan seems suprised to hear that - seems that in that area the media perspective is that OSU is targeting Gillispie rather than Self.  Gotta love the media and ALL its perspectives.

Smart Move
The lure of home can be strong, but in my mind, Pickens taints the potential good feelings associated with returning to ones alma mater.

Everytime I read something about the OSU situation I feel like taking a shower.
