Kentucky basketball recruiting update

There are a few things to talk about recruiting-wise this morning, the most surprising being this article by Jerry Tipton that Nicola Kecman is not a Buckeye just yet, directly contradicting this story at Bucknuts.com.  I have no idea at this moment who is right, but Rivals' OSU page has him listed as a Buckeye commit.  Who is right?  I don't know for sure.  Bucknuts was citing "sources" but named no names.  Word is that he may be visiting Ole Miss this week.  We will probably know for sure sometime today.

According to the same Tipton article, Majok's decision will be coming as soon as early this week.  His coach and advisor apparently told Tipton that "UConn led, in part, because it's the last suitor to embrace Majok."  This is not Majok's first visit to Storrs, and even though I think UConn is leading, it is instructive to note that Majok did not commit on the spot.  That fact has been used to justify speculation that Majok is not quite in the bag for UConn yet.

Still, my experience is that unless he saw something at Connecticut he didn't like that well, or UConn somehow failed to make the kind of impression UK made on him, I don't expect Majok to be in blue next year.  It is a nice hope, but it feels to me like Cat fans are grasping at straws here.  UConn has been on Majok longer than anyone, and as we saw with Patrick Patterson, that means a lot.  Kentucky had been on Patterson for a long time, developed a relationship that was enough to bring him even through a coaching change.  That takes time that Kentucky has not had, and leads me to this somewhat pessimistic appraisal.

In case you haven't heard, Josh Harrellson wrapped up his visit with St. Louis and will be making his decision on Tuesday.  This is another one of those calls that is closer than expected, and once again, a competitor has had the chance to make the final impression.  While nobody watching the situation believes that St. Louis is now the leader for Harrellson's services, Harrellson has indicated that proximity to his home is an advantage that they have, while tradition, visibility and the "grand scale" of Kentucky are advantages there.

This case is, fortunately for UK, different than Majok.  Majerus has not been on Harrellson for years, and neither has Gillispie.  Both have had about the same opportunity to make an impression, and we are not talking about thousands of miles as far as proximity to home is concerned, so even though it may be a bit harder for his parents to see him play, we are talking about a matter of some 5.5 hours of driving time.  I feel very good about this recruitment, and would be quite surprised if we were unable to secure Harrellson's services.  It still could happen, and Majerus apparently did a bang-up sales job, but I believe that we are in a very good position here.

There is no real update about Paul McCoy, but the UK staff has reportedly been in contact with Verdell Jones recently.  Many had given up on Jones, and Marc Maggard has stated that he doesn't have an offer from UK, even though Jones himself has said more than once that he does.  Kentucky has been on Jones a long time, and for my money, he is the best combo guard prospect we are currently recruiting.  Many like McCoy and Maze better, but not me.  Jones is a smart kid with good skills who is likely to thrive in Gillispie's, "I shave by driving my whiskers through my cheeks with a hammer and biting them off on the inside" style.  Jones is expected to make his decision this week.

As to everyone else, well, I have nothing new to report.

Update [2008-4-28 15:21:8 by Truzenzuzex]:  A UConn blog is reporting that Majok has committed to the Huskies.

Update [2008-4-28 18:14:39 by Truzenzuzex]:  This doesn't make me feel real warm and fuzzy.

Proximity matters a lot to players too
Around the time of Patterson's signings, there were memes going around the internet that a major reason Patrick Patterson chose UK was the proximity to his home.

And we see with Derrick Jasper it's important too.

But Harrellson's already done the "stay close to the folks" thing, and he seems quite independent, so you never know.

Style?
"I shave by driving my whiskers through my cheeks with a hammer and biting them off on the inside"

Not sure I've ever heard that comparison... intriguing.  ;-)

Well...
That was what I was thinking.

Tru's was always one of my favorites.

The sleeps/waits one seemed to fit well.

At the risk of dumbing down ASoB...
There is no 'ctrl' button on Billy Gillispie's computer. Billy Gillispie is always in control.

If...
Billy Gillispie has $5 and you have $5, then Billy Gillispie has more money than you.  ;)

planning
The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. Even the worst-laid plans of Coach Gillispie come off without a hitch.

Somewhere for Billy Gillsipe facts...
We need a little sidebar for collected Billy Gillsipie facts!!!  (Even if most of them are just reworded Chuck Norris lines!)  If ASoB is too classy a place for it, there's always firebilly.com!  (I'm looking at you FGM!)

Majok
I thought the Majok story was interesting if not surprising. I wonder what UCONN will do now as they have 1 more recruit than they do scholarships now that Thabeet is coming back to school? It will be interesting to see if someone doesnt end up at UCONN.

Thanks for sharing a Gator gaffe.
On a slightly related note, Tayshaun Prince has gone 19-21 from the field over the last two Piston playoff games.  Now that's "stupid" good.  A slightly better "stupid" than Mr. Horford.

this has always been my favorite.

If you can see BCG, he is recruiting you. If you can't see BCG you may be only seconds away from from signing a LOI.

PT and recruits
if harrellson is lloking at who else is being recruited, and how much he'll play, i got to think he has to like the situation at UK. BCG has been going after mostly wing type players that can play 1-3. harrellson is needed on the front line.

If you score a basket at the University of...
Saint Louis and no one cares, did you really score?  If you play out four years of college basketball at the University of Saint Louis and no one recognizes you outside of a 20 mile radius of the campus (because you never played on national television), did you really play major college basketball?  If you win the championship in .... whatever conference St. Louis is in... like... who cares?

Josh, we need a big man to round out our high-low tandem wit Patrick Patterson.  He will make you a better player because he will draw so many double teams!  You have a chance to play on ESPN and national television regularly and you are thinking about going to Saint Louis to play in obscurity?  Step up to the big time.

UK Vs St Louis (All-Time)
http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/Statistics/StLouis.html Most games were long ago but Billikens are one of a very few schools with more W than L vs UK.

Verdell Jones Will Announce Monday At 5 PM
Visiting Arizona this weekend. Zona, Sota, IU, or UK, who knows?

This doesnt really matter...
These last minute scrambles to fill the roster and fighting over 3 star recruits are of very little importance.  What will matter is long and hard fought battles of UK versus Duke, UNC, Florida, UT and others for the high school superstars.

The day UK's future hangs in the balance of JUCO players is the day I start wearing... gasp... red.  Personally, I say save the scholarships for better players next year.

UK Lost Players To Duke, UNC In 1990's
Didn't seem to matter. Pitino lost nearly every head-2-head recruiting battle vs Duke or UNC. Not a single Wildcat recruit by Pitino chose UK over Duke or UNC.

I don't remember too many complaints.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 28, 2008 11:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

NO
That is not correct.

by MyBloodRunsBlue on Apr 29, 2008 5:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, YES, It Is ABSOLUTELY Correct
Not one single UK recruit from 1990 through 1997 picked UK over UNC or Duke. Not a one.

Sorry..
as usual you are wrong.

by MyBloodRunsBlue on Apr 29, 2008 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's a really easy solution to this.
Name one. I don't claim to know which of you is right, but if you can name one, that settles it. As for FortyYear being "wrong, as usual," I would take exception to that. He's one of the best stats guys here.

by Acdixon on Apr 29, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please ...
either support your argument or drop it.

He made the statement, you claim he is wrong.  Fine.  But because you are challenging his claim, it is incumbent upon you to offer proof to support it.

And what does "as usual" mean?  He is usually correct.

Forty Year is wrong?
UMPHHH!
We shall see about that.

Seems I remember you from another thread here as being a very argumentative individual. I mean why?...when there are so many intellectuals on this site who give the BBN much information on our CATS.

My Wife Can Name Several Times Daily (I'm Wrong)
Not this time.

1990 - Mashburn, Toomer, Martinez.
1991 - Riddick, Brown, Timberlake, Harrison.
1992 - Rhodes, Delk, McCarty, Prickett, Dent.
1993 - Sheppard, Epps.
1994 - Walker, Padgett, Edwards, Mills.
1995 - Mercer, Turner, Simmons, Mohammed.
1996 - Magloire.
1997 - Bradley, Anthony, Hogan.

Many good (even great) players among those. None picked UK over Duke or UNC. Most were recruited by basketball powers in Big East, SEC, etc. Just not UNC or Duke.

The cold, hard facts
There's the FortyYear we know and love! Bringing the facts. Opinions vary, but you can't argue with the truth.

Players
Sorry to burst your bubble but we need players like Paul Mccoy and Josh Harrelson this year. I hope they come to UK and have outstanding carreers.

You dont just go out and land top 15 players everyday and if you want the program to have any sort of relevance in the next couple of seasons you get who you can get.

In a couple of years when I see UK getting back to begin really good I still dont see Billy G going out and landing all top 50 players or whatever it is you want. He's going to get the best player for the PROGRAM not necessarilly the best player.

DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

Well
If they sign with UK of course I hope they have stellar careers.  However, UK is an elite program and this scrambling around to fill in spots with what is left over has to end.  I am sure it will end.  Now, what bubble were you trying to burst?  You lost me there.
