Does Derrick Caracter = Rodrick Rhodes?

Do y'all remember all the hoopla at Kentucky when Rick Pitino signed Rodrick Rhodes, then the #2 ranked and consensus top 5 player in the nation coming out of high school?  I certainly do.

Here in my hands is a book called "Full Court Pressure," a book written by Rick Pitino and Dick Weiss (yes, that Dick Weiss) in 1992 which I am sure many of you have read.  This book is a first edition hardback given to me as a gift for Christmas, or my birthday, or something.  In it was a chapter called "All Rhodes Lead To Kentucky," which encapsulates the ups and downs of recruiting a young man bound and determined to get to the NBA as soon as possible.

As I was reading some articles today about a press conference yesterday by Pitino where Caracter's situation was discussed, and this one by Rick Bozich of the Courier-Journal compared Rhodes and Caracter's respective careers under Rick Pitino.  It is an interesting article.  And I think he has a point.

But the question becomes this -- as much as a nuisance as Caracter has been, what damage will be done to the image of Rick Pitino by being seen as running off a second player?  Make no mistake, Pitino's press conference left little doubt that is exactly what he was doing, and I am not criticizing him for doing it.  Caracter has been a serious distraction to the team, and I certainly applauded when Smith ran off Adam Chiles and Rashaad Carruth.  Carruth had become a coach's nightmare, and Chiles was certainly not good for team chemistry if the reports I heard were true.  But in the end, in Smith's own words, everything that could be done to save them had been done:

Smith said Kentucky tried traditional approaches: Withdrawing privileges such as game tickets or dorm space, having psychological testing and professional counseling. "That's pretty much the last straw," he says, "because by that time you've probably exhausted everything else that you have at your disposal. Whatever you have to do to try to change that behavior. When that doesn't work, you have to move on."
But Smith got hammered in some circles for doing that, and I have a feeling some of that same criticism, fair or unfair,is coming Pitino's way if he actually follows through with this, which, by the way, is far from certain.  Remember Pitino's "indefinite suspension" of Caracter this year that lasted, what, seven days?

I hope for the sake of Caracter and Pitino that both parties get this right.  Caracter has been very unfair to Pitino and Louisville with his bizarre, childish antics.  But with that said, he is still a college age kid and this decision is very important to his life.  He has talent, but no NBA team is going to ignore the fact that he is a serious discipline problem.  He also has not done nearly enough to prove he is worthy of being in the Association.

But with all that said, I have to wonder -- how much responsibility does a coach have when they recruit a kid with a known problem to school?  Caracter's reputation was widely recognized in high school, and many schools backed off their recruitment of him for just that reason.  That is where he and Rhodes diverge -- Rhodes was thought of as a dynamic personality, but never a discipline problem coming out of high school.  Pitino was apparently confident that he could turn Caracter around, and to some extent, he has.  My point here, though, is that there have been arguably many times when a truly principled person could have justified dismissing Caracter.  Many coaches have dismissed their better players before or during the season when their problems turned out to be intractable (see Felton, Dennis).  Instead, Pitino played mind games with Caracter for 2 years and kept him for his basketball skill.  Now, after the season and with a pair of highly touted big men coming in as possible replacements but without the baggage, he apparently wants to cast him adrift -- thanks for the memories!

So how will this affect Pitino's national image?  If Bozich is any indication, not at all, at least in the local media.  But quite frankly, nobody who has watched Pitino over the years is completely convinced the last chaper in this story has been written -- all we have to do is look at the Earl Clark on-again, off-again declaration and Pitino's involvement to see that.  But in the end, I do think it is fair and necessary for Pitino to consider the best interests of his team as well as the best interests of Caracter.  Is he doing that?  We'll have to wait and see until the curtain comes down on the final act of this play.

Character is
a problem for UofL - so much so that I don't know a single fan that wouldn't help Pitino kick him out the door. Yes, he's been treated like a child (and he proceeded to break all of those rule) and yes, UofL recruits a lot of the 'bad boys' for football and basketball (to mild success) but can you blame Pitino for not wanting to put up with Character anymore when he doesn't have too? I say good riddance to him, but unfortunately, he'll probably be back on the bench this coming year.

I have to say ...
we have been there and done that with Carruth.  I'm still not sure that was the best thing for Carruth, but it may well have been the best thing for the UK basketball team.

My question is, has Pitino discharged his responsibility to Caracter?  He recruited him knowing full well he was "troubled."  Is cutting him loose now a bit too convenient?

I don't know, and I'm not intending to be critical.  I'm just wondering.

Of course
Of course he's cutting him because its convenient - rather, it won't tank the team if he cuts him now. In my opinion, if it weren't for Pitino, Character probably wouldn't have played on a national team anyway, so he should be thanking him for the opportunity that he had (and blew)

This isn't a criticism of Pitino ...
... but I would have cut bait long ago.  Well acually, I would not have recruitied him in the first place.

As we all know coaches have huge egos.  Pitino's is bigger than most, and sometimes that "I can do anything" mindset can cause a normally right-thinking individual to have an inflated perception of their own powers of persuasion.  Caracter was more than Pitino could chew, and in my view, it's time for him to "spit it out".

Pitino is either a liar, or he has a genuine affection for Caracter's mother.  He has stated on more than one occasion that he (paraphrasing) can't give up on Derrick, because of his mother.

I respect that if it's true, but at some point one has to lead the child back home.

Get the Character out...
I remember reading about this kid in Slam when he was in eighth grade. He was supposed to be the next coming of Shaq. Guess D Crack didn't pay attention to the fact that Shaq worked his butt off to get into the NBA. Well, maybe not at the charity stripe, but in every other way. :)

It's such a shame when you see a kid piss away talent. Instead of a potential top 3 pick he is hoping to go in the second round. Sad.

As far as Pitino is concerned, he is paid millions to deal with this. Right or wrong it's his career and reputation at stake and with a little luck maybe UL will suffer a bit in the recruiting world. Doubtful. The Pitino legacy is still rolling although I've noticed that he isn't grabbing those Jamal Mashburn's, Ron Mercer's, or even a Derek Anderson. Has his recruiting product (the areas he is known to draw from) dipped in talent over the years? Has the posse effect finally gotten to the East coast baller?

Personally I believe Petrino should have gotten rid of Character earlier this season, but I do realize that he was trying to give his team the best possible chance to succeed. I guess I am more from the mold of Felton than Petino.

What has he done?
Color me ignorant... but I don't follow all the rumors on players.  (I still don't know what Carruth did... I was in Iowa at the time and never have followed the rumor-mill on the internet.)

I know that repeatedly Character is in the news for "violations of team rules" and generally being a disturbance.  However, not once have I heard a major news source tell me what he's done.  Is he running a crack ring out of Freedom Hall?  Is he beating up engineering majors for their lunch money?  Is he telling one too many jokes in the huddle?  Is he falling asleep during team meetings?  I know that ASoB doesn't generally peddle in rumor-mongering, but since the subject is on the front page... could someone indulge me with the latest from Wisteria Lane?

hey now
easy on the engineering majors, lol. Pretty much he was an iffy recruit due to his behavior in high school and thus had an extra set of eyes on him. After many little violations he was given extra rules to follow that would be rather harsh to an 8th grader (like a 9pm curfew, which I have personally seen him violate 3 times). His habitual breaking of little teams rules has everyone here fed up.

Charachter
I know for certain that he once was disciplined for being out partying at night vioiating team curfew and signed a contract with Pitino promising not to do that any more. The same night he signed the contract he went out partying and violated team curfew.

There's one of many confirmed stories for you. This kid isnt peddling drugs or anything he's just a nuisance and lazy and doesnt listen to what anyone tells him.

Hope & Patience Have Limits
All great or very good basketball coaches have huge egos.  They believe they have a chance to win any athletic battle.  Many basketball coaches also think they are molders of the character (no pun intended) of young people -- that they can shape and guide young persons who are less than perfect into the realm of respectability if not perfection.

Athletic competition builds character, right?  College basketball is supposed to be about helping y0ung people, right?  A coach has an obligation to help young people grow up, right?

As I recall, Denny Crum made a rather eloquent statement regarding his commitment to helping flawed but talented young me succeed in life.

After doing what he needed to do vis a vis "Team Turmoil," Coach Smith said that he had taken kids on UK's team because people had told him that he would be good for these kids.  Then Coach Smith said I realize I need to recruit kids who are going to be good for Coach Smith.

Pitino does many things that irritate me, but I respect and appreciate his efforts to take on "projects" -- to attempt to help young people with problems.  I also respect his decisions to cut himself free from these individuals after a year or so of giving them opportunities.

Tricky Ricky really has done a very good job over the years of balancing what this kid can do for me against what I can do for this kid.  He takes chances, some pay off, but he cuts his losses.  I think he was very patient with Caracter.  I think he would have cut Caracter loose regardless of who was coming in.  Enough is enough.

Footnote:  I question whether UK should have promised Liggins a scholarship when he couldn't qualify academically coming out of high school and when he still hasn't qualified after a year in a "PREP" school.  While we are waiting for him to get test results back, other semi-promising prospects are leaning toward other schools.

Bottom line:  Basketball coaches should coach basketball players and leave social work to social workers.
