Derrick Jasper: What you mean to us.
Appreciate: To be grateful for, welcome, enjoy, be obliged for, be indebted for, acknowledge, never forget, give thanks for.
Appreciation: Sense of gratitude, thankfulness, recognition, gratefulness.
I suppose we have all felt unappreciated at one time or another in our lives. Whether it be at work, in a marriage, or on the field of play. To feel so unappreciated that one considers leaving that job, marriage, or team takes the perceived lack of appreciation to a whole other, very serious level.
I regret that Derrick feels so unappreciated that he would consider leaving the University of Kentucky. He has been praised by many, including his head coach, for his unparalleled desire to return quickly to the Kentucky lineup after his micro-fracture surgery. His selfless desire was commended and applauded by many, including most posters on ASoB.
But, the self-esteem of young men, particularily young men in the spot light, can be fragile. Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley seemed to receive the bulk of the praise from the media and fans alike for their incredible turnaround season. What Joe and Ramel achieved this past year should be of great personal pride to those two young men. Their personal bounceback from a rough and tumble pre-conference schedule is admirable, and has been noted as such.
Responsibility for the TEAM turnarond is due to the guts, determination, and singled-minded focus of one Derrick Jasper. That is mighty high praise considering Kentucky had three players selected All-SEC, and the co-SEC Freshman of the Year. His re-emergence into the line-up, not coincidently, coincided with the improved play and results Kentucky experienced.
It was Derrick Jasper who defended with abandon. It was Derrick Jasper who stretched the opposing defenses with his newfound accuracy from the three-point line. It was Derrick Jasper who lead the team in defensive rebounds (in SEC play) from both the point guard and small forward spots. It was Derrick Jasper who replaced the considerable talents of Patrick Patterson in the paint after Patterson went down with a season-ending injury. It was Derrick Jasper who played out of his mind in the Tennessee game in Knoxville, which enabled UK to have a chance to win what seemed to be an unwinnable game. It was Derrick Jasper who was responsible for the tears in the eyes of Mr. Wildcat after that memorable UT game ( Keightley was so moved by the effort of his beloved Wildcats that he "cried like a baby" according to Billy Gillispie). It was Derrick Jasper who nearly single-handedly won the Florida game in Rupp Arena with his cool-headed shooting, and mastery of the from-the-corner-three-point-bank-shot.
It was Derrick Jasper who, while rehabbing his surgically repaired knee, practiced his outside shot even though he was experiencing severe pain. He displayed selflessness, and a concern about team, not "me". His efforts and love for his teammates were rewarded with a season that will not be soon forgotten.
Most of us do all we can to avoid pain and hard work. Conversely, Mr. Jasper ignored the pain, and embraced the hard work. High praise is do him for that fact alone. Considering he contributed like few others to the success of his team, while never playing at 100%, makes him deserving of the Big Blue Nation's gratitude and recognition.
Derrick embodies the attributes every UK fan looks for in a player: hustle, pride, never give up attitude, team first mind-set, and an unmatched desire to win.
Kentucky not only would miss Derrick's talent on the floor, but even more so, the leadership he has displayed through his actions. Young and older players alike can learn a lot from a teammate possessing Derrick's character. His willingness to do whatever it takes to win is a trait coveted by coaches who aspire to win championships. Many athletes talk a good game, Derrick has lived it, and then some.

Derrick, what you mean to me..
If you are whining about not being appreciated stop it. You are a superstar on campus and no doubt have two leggy blondes on each arm.
If these reports are not true, please let it be known.

Did anyone hear him say it?

According to Tru ...
Matt May is a very responsible and well-respected reporter/columnist, who in my opinion, would not have put the story out for public consumption if it didn't have merit.

But did you hear him whine?
I'm just always skeptical of this kind of thing. Did Matt May say "Well, Derrick Jasper told me ..." or is it hearsay 2nd or 3rd hand? People always tend to reinterpret things they hear.
I'm not doubting he's considering transferring, I'm just not convinced of the cause just yet.

I don't know May's source ...
You are certainly not being impractical to question the veracity of May's report. We've all been misinformed by the media at one time or another, but attempting to separate fact from fiction is very difficult unless the reporter has a history of misreporting.
The bottom line with me is that I trust May. It is certainly not unreasonable for you to question the story as you have.

It is being reported ...
Doesn't make it true, and I don't blame you for being skeptical. These viral things don't always turn out to be totally accurate, and it is wise for everyone to look at unsourced "news" like this with a bit of a jaundiced eye.
I work a bit on feel on stuff like this ... if it "feels" right, I will usually discuss it. There have been many that have failed this test, but this one passes.
One thing though -- nobody is saying this is a done deal or an irrevocable decision. More like "if he were to make the decision today, he would be gone." That isn't good, but it also isn't cause for a eulogy.
But Jasper definitely deserves more praise than he got, and that is the tack I am taking.

I think he deserves more praise too
I'm not attacking the articles in any way, you guys are just reporting the news and giving us a chance to shout out to Derrick Jasper, which is great and deserving. So thanks guys for that chance.
I am however, discussing it. 8') I think the homesickness stuff from the press conference makes more sense to me than the fan appreciation thing. I can see him feeling that he doesn't fit in - Lexington and UK are a lot different culturally than California. Also these guys have a lot of time on their hands all of a sudden when the season's over. The next season seems really far away. Idle minds can certainly go to work. And like I said in the earlier post, it looks from the recruiting standpoint that Gillispie is recruiting replacements for Jasper, even though we have more desperate needs at other positions. I know coach is getting the best players he can for the current and future success of the program, but I can see how it could be misconstrued. While I don't think Jasper is being replaced, I can understand that perception.
On the other hand, homesickness could be coach-speak for a different major issue. 8')

Wonderful article
Derrick Jasper is one case; this certainly doesn't mean that from now on all players who feel no appreciation (if that is indeed the case this time) will deserve an "appreciation thread" or warrant public recognition of any kind. But IMO, Jasper does, he has earned it, Derrick Jasper was instrumental in the successful turnaround this year and it would be an absolute shame and detriment to UK to lose such an exceptional athlete and young man as Derrick Jasper. Plus, he is my daughter's absolute FAVORITE! I sure as hell don't want to have to answer the question, "But, where's Derrick"? There will most surely be tears!

Unexpected Departures
With Gillispie, at least here at ASoB, the prevalent opinion was that we did not want to see him leave. But, if he were to leave, UK would hire a suitable replacement, and life would go on.

Derrick...
We admire everything you stand for in a basketball player heart, will power, and an unquestioned team-first mentality. It would be shame to lose you on this team. Make no mistake about it we are ALL pulling for you to be a part of UK basketball until either your eligibility runs out or you move on to the next level.
Earlier in the season, I suggested DJ shut it down for the year. I didn't want to see it happen and in no way was I trying to knock him. I was however very concerned about his long term health and thought the R&R would be benefical.
Consider this my humble apology for doubting the strength and determination of a true warrior. While at times it was obvious you were still playing with pain, it was clear nothing was going to keep you from contributing to this team. That earns you heaping mounds of RESPECT in my book. Not only did you make it back from an injury that has the potential to end careers in a shorter time than I have ever heard of, you came back with an improved shot, and injected life into a team searching for its identity.
I guess I'm pretty clear on where I stand on the issue....you are needed on this team. If for some reason you do choose to leave Lexington, please do not do so because you have doubts about how UK fans feel towards you. Much respect!

I'm all for showing appreciation but
I think Derrick is a great kid and he's a talent we'll miss for sure. But, this kind of stuff is embarassing. I know we all love him. He knows it too. You know why? Because he plays BASKETBALL at KENTUCKY. These players don't sit in their dorm rooms after playing before 24,000 fans day in and out, thinking a fan in section 232, row F seat 19 didn't send him any "love".
We'll miss him and we'll wish him well if he goes. But, let that be it. All of this sudden ego stroking is enough. The kid is 20, not 6.

Loony
Everyone on here knows how UK fans feel about the players.
Look at how everyone wanted to have Pelphrey as a coach - even though his only claim to fame is a mediocre season with a loaded Arkansas team. How about Travis Ford? One NCAA tournament appearance and everyone is ready for him to be the coach. If either one of these guys were not former players they would not even be in the conversation.
If DJ is homesick and wants to transfer than godspeed DJ and thank you for service to the BBN.

In Addition
IMO, some UK fans are acting like he is asking to be babied and coddled over, when he is, in fact an adult who makes his own decisions. If he's got the NBA in his future, he'll have to get over his homesickness, and even higher demands than at his time at UK. And, you have to know he knows all of this.
And, if you really believe IF he DOES transfer that it's because of "homesickness" or because of lack of "appreciation", I've got some land for sale in Argentina.
Just wish him the best, thank him for his time- but don't let his last thoughts of UK fans be begging ones that sound so pathetic and sad.
by sherwood8 on Apr 17, 2008 11:09 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think ...
Let's not make this into something it isn't. Many fans, including me, want him to stay. We want him to feel right at home. As far as I know, he never mentioned not being appreciated to anyone, but that part of the story was out there from reliable sources, and quite frankly, I think there is some truth to that. But if Jasper can't handle the separation from hearth and home, he has a lot of company, and I understand.
We will never know exactly what he was said or is thinking, but I thought it was fair and right that we give him a little more love. Joe and Ramel and the coach got a lot, and they earned it, but Jasper was often an afterthought. This whole episode has made me realize that, and I thought it was time to do something about it.
That's all. No begging, no pleading, no nothing. Just some overdue appreciation for a guy that earned it in pain and silence.
