Derrick Jasper: What you mean to us.

Appreciate: To be grateful for, welcome, enjoy, be obliged for, be indebted for, acknowledge, never forget, give thanks for.

Appreciation: Sense of gratitude, thankfulness, recognition, gratefulness.

I suppose we have all felt unappreciated at one time or another in our lives.  Whether it be at work, in a marriage, or on the field of play.  To feel so unappreciated that one considers leaving that job, marriage, or team takes the perceived lack of appreciation to a whole other, very serious level.

I regret that Derrick feels so unappreciated that he would consider leaving the University of Kentucky.  He has been praised by many, including his head coach, for his unparalleled desire to return quickly to the Kentucky lineup after his micro-fracture surgery.  His selfless desire was commended and applauded by many, including most posters on ASoB.

But, the self-esteem of young men, particularily young men in the spot light, can be fragile.  Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley seemed to receive the bulk of the praise from the media and fans alike for their incredible turnaround season.  What Joe and Ramel achieved this past year should be of great personal pride to those two young men.  Their personal bounceback from a rough and tumble pre-conference schedule is admirable, and has been noted as such.

Responsibility for the TEAM turnarond is due to the guts, determination, and singled-minded focus of one Derrick Jasper.  That is mighty high praise considering Kentucky had three players selected All-SEC, and the co-SEC Freshman of the Year.  His re-emergence into the line-up, not coincidently, coincided with the improved play and results Kentucky experienced.

It was Derrick Jasper who defended with abandon.  It was Derrick Jasper who stretched the opposing defenses with his newfound accuracy from the three-point line.  It was Derrick Jasper who lead the team in defensive rebounds (in SEC play) from both the point guard and small forward spots.  It was Derrick Jasper who replaced the considerable talents of Patrick Patterson in the paint after Patterson went down with a season-ending injury.  It was Derrick Jasper who played out of his mind in the Tennessee game in Knoxville, which enabled UK to have a chance to win what seemed to be an unwinnable game.  It was Derrick Jasper who was responsible for the tears in the eyes of Mr. Wildcat after that memorable UT game ( Keightley was so moved by the effort of his beloved Wildcats that he "cried like a baby" according to Billy Gillispie).  It was Derrick Jasper who nearly single-handedly won the Florida game in Rupp Arena with his cool-headed shooting, and mastery of the from-the-corner-three-point-bank-shot.

It was Derrick Jasper who, while rehabbing his surgically repaired knee, practiced his outside shot even though he was experiencing severe pain.  He displayed selflessness, and a concern about team, not "me".  His efforts and love for his teammates were rewarded with a season that will not be soon forgotten.

Most of us do all we can to avoid pain and hard work.  Conversely,  Mr. Jasper ignored the pain, and embraced the hard work.  High praise is do him for that fact alone.  Considering he contributed like few others to the success of his team, while never playing at 100%, makes him deserving of the Big Blue Nation's gratitude and recognition.

Derrick embodies the attributes every UK fan looks for in a player: hustle, pride, never give up attitude, team first mind-set, and an unmatched desire to win.

Kentucky not only would miss Derrick's talent on the floor, but even more so, the leadership he has displayed through his actions.  Young and older players alike can learn a lot from a teammate possessing Derrick's character.  His willingness to do whatever it takes to win is a trait coveted by coaches who aspire to win championships.  Many athletes talk a good game, Derrick has lived it, and then some.

Derrick, what you mean to me..
you are a good player and I am glad you are a Wildcat.  I am damn proud of you.

If you are whining about not being appreciated stop it.  You are a superstar on campus and no doubt have two leggy blondes on each arm.

If these reports are not true, please let it be known.

Did anyone hear him say it?
I know we're all crazy about taking rumors and running with them as UK fans, but has anyone actually heard Jasper whining?  I don't think so.  It's probably a friend of a friend's roommate's cousin heard something, and who knows how it got translated through all that.

According to Tru ...
... who I trust implicitly, Matt May reported the news on The Cat's Pause web-site.

Matt May is a very responsible and well-respected reporter/columnist, who in my opinion, would not have put the story out for public consumption if it didn't have merit.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 16, 2008 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But did you hear him whine?
Has he whined on TV, myspace, to the press?  Not that I've heard.  If it's just something he told to someone in confidence, that's a whole different story than whining.

I'm just always skeptical of this kind of thing.  Did Matt May say "Well, Derrick Jasper told me ..." or is it hearsay 2nd or 3rd hand?  People always tend to reinterpret things they hear.

I'm not doubting he's considering transferring, I'm just not convinced of the cause just yet.

by EEWildcat on Apr 16, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know May's source ...
... but I am working under the assumption that he completely trusts whoever it may be.

You are certainly not being impractical to question the veracity of May's report.  We've all been misinformed by the media at one time or another, but attempting to separate fact from fiction is very difficult unless the reporter has a history of misreporting.

The bottom line with me is that I trust May. It is certainly not unreasonable for you to question the story as you have.

It is being reported ...
by many considered "in the know," including such worthies as Marc Maggard.

Doesn't make it true, and I don't blame you for being skeptical.  These viral things don't always turn out to be totally accurate, and it is wise for everyone to look at unsourced "news" like this with a bit of a jaundiced eye.

I work a bit on feel on stuff like this ... if it "feels" right, I will usually discuss it.  There have been many that have failed this test, but this one passes.

One thing though -- nobody is saying this is a done deal or an irrevocable decision.  More like "if he were to make the decision today, he would be gone."  That isn't good, but it also isn't cause for a eulogy.

But Jasper definitely deserves more praise than he got, and that is the tack I am taking.

by Truzenzuzex on Apr 16, 2008 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he deserves more praise too
We've celebrated the seniors, we should celebrate our warrior, Derrick Jasper.  And I had a huge post doing it.  He's still my favorite player on the team and I'll be very sad if he transfers.

I'm not attacking the articles in any way, you guys are just reporting the news and giving us a chance to shout out to Derrick Jasper, which is great and deserving.  So thanks guys for that chance.

I am however, discussing it. 8')  I think the homesickness stuff from the press conference makes more sense to me than the fan appreciation thing.  I can see him feeling that he doesn't fit in - Lexington and UK are a lot different culturally than California.  Also these guys have a lot of time on their hands all of a sudden when the season's over.  The next season seems really far away.  Idle minds can certainly go to work.  And like I said in the earlier post, it looks from the recruiting standpoint that Gillispie is recruiting replacements for Jasper, even though we have more desperate needs at other positions.  I know coach is getting the best players he can for the current and future success of the program, but I can see how it could be misconstrued.  While I don't think Jasper is being replaced, I can understand that perception.

On the other hand, homesickness could be coach-speak for a different major issue. 8')

Jasper
I have said to my friends for over a year now that DJ will probably be one of the most valuable players to his respective team in the country his senior year here, that by the end of his senior year he will be as much or more beloved than Chuck Hayes was in his final year, and that he will probably always be underrated nationally (because so many of the things he is great at do not show up in the box score necessarily) - the only way I think I could be wrong in saying these things is if he transfers I guess, which would break the part of my heart that is Kentucky Blue.

Wonderful article
The words, "spoiled", "coddled" and "brat" have been thrown around many times in this discussion, but even if that is the case - really, so what?  I for one can just chalk it up to the fact that Derrick is 20 years old, I am willing to go ahead and give him that old "pat on the back",  or "show him some love", if he needs it,  what does it hurt - nothing, it doesn't hurt me one bit, or make me go out of my way.  Even if he does in fact have "two leggy blondes" on his arm (and I believe all single 20 year-old males should have at least one leggy blond on their arm - Go Derrick!) that doesn't mean his confidence is thru the roof. The fact that Coach Gillispie gave Derrick noticeably the most public praise out of anyone on the team gives me even more reason to believe that Derrick's personality might require a different approach than some of the others.  Coach Gillispie, gushing about a how great a player is and what "heart" they have - come on, not exactly BCG's style.

Derrick Jasper is one case; this certainly doesn't mean that from now on all players who feel no appreciation (if that is indeed the case this time) will deserve an "appreciation thread" or warrant public recognition of any kind.  But IMO, Jasper does, he has earned it, Derrick Jasper was instrumental in the successful turnaround this year and it would be an absolute shame and detriment to UK to lose such an exceptional athlete and young man as Derrick Jasper.  Plus, he is my daughter's absolute FAVORITE!  I sure as hell don't want to have to answer the question, "But, where's Derrick"?  There will most surely be tears!

Derrick
Because of what the team went thru this year and the way things played out by season's end, every member of this team will always be special to me. Joe and Ramel were talked about more because as seniors we all knew that whatever BCG accomplishes over the next few years wouldn't include them. DJ has a chance to study under a basketball fanatic and accomplish his dreams right there in Lexington. Please know if you see this, Derrick, that you have been blessed with God given talent and we (the Big Blue Nation) have been blessed to get to know you through your work on the court. I would be heartsick to think that you would leave. You are a University of Kentucky Wildcat. Best wishes on your continued recovery, and we'll "see" you in the fall.

Ignore the naysayers
Derrick, if you're reading this and have problems with "fans", just ignore the naysayers.  If they don't like your game, they don't know anything about basketball anyway.  Some people are just negative in general and like putting down other people to massage their own wilting self-esteem.

The silent majority is behind you 100% and looking forward to great things from you in the future.

I'm sure if he reads your comments he will be most appreciative.

By the looks of this and Tru's thread, the "silent majority" have spoken with a boooming voice.

With all do respect...
How many of you all were like well if BCG don't want to be here we will find someone who does.  Is this only limited to the coach?

Unexpected Departures
In my opinion, a big part of the attitude taken by the BBN when a player or coach leaves unexpectedly has a lot to do with the amount of "equity" the player or coach has built up in his time here.  The circumstances surrounding the exit also play a major role in how the fans react.

With Gillispie, at least here at ASoB, the prevalent opinion was that we did not want to see him leave.  But, if he were to leave, UK would hire a suitable replacement, and life would go on.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 16, 2008 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

two different stories
I would be much more forgiving of a college sophomore leaving, at least in part, due to an emotional response to not feeling he had gotten enough credit for potentially risking his CAREER for this program when a nice home like California will have open arms for him compared to BCG leaving because he wants to party out of the spotlight.  If DJ doesnt want to be here at the moment, he could just be questioning where he wants to be at this point in his life - I think if he chose to stay he would be very thankful that he did when all is said and done, but I find it hard blaming him for questioning the whole thing.  I transfered to a college very far from home after my freshman year and a year or two after that started questioning, at times, why I was in KY and not back home - and I think thousands and thousands of college kids have done the same in the past.  If DJ were to leave, though I would hate it in every way as a UK fan, it would be quite understandable IMO.

Oh yeah....
I love Derrick.  What he did for us last year was courageous and admirable.  If you measure a man by the size of his heart he is a giant.  I hope and pray that we do not lose him.  His work ethic has to be one of the tops on the team which was evident from his freshmen year to where he couldn't throw a ball in the ocean to where he was almost automatic last year.

I just wanted to play devils advocate with my previous post.

Derrick...
If ever you do happen across this site, please take this outpouring of affection to heart.  The BBN loves you.

We admire everything you stand for in a basketball player heart, will power, and an unquestioned team-first mentality.  It would be shame to lose you on this team.  Make no mistake about it we are ALL pulling for you to be a part of UK basketball until either your eligibility runs out or you move on to the next level.

Earlier in the season, I suggested DJ shut it down for the year.  I didn't want to see it happen and in no way was I trying to knock him.  I was however very concerned about his long term health and thought the R&R would be benefical.

Consider this my humble apology for doubting the strength and determination of a true warrior.  While at times it was obvious you were still playing with pain, it was clear nothing was going to keep you from contributing to this team.  That earns you heaping mounds of RESPECT in my book.  Not only did you make it back from an injury that has the potential to end careers in a shorter time than I have ever heard of, you came back with an improved shot, and injected life into a team searching for its identity.

I guess I'm pretty clear on where I stand on the issue....you are needed on this team.  If for some reason you do choose to leave Lexington, please do not do so because you have doubts about how UK fans feel towards you.  Much respect!

I still think
DJ has a leggy blondes on both arms and is as happy as can be.  It is off season now and these silly rumors, like the T Boone is making all the decisions at OSU's athletic department, will just keep coming.  Bored people will say anything.

I know absolutely no one "in the know"
but I do pay attention.  I remember when UK played Marquette in the tournament game how it was such a big deal for Jasper to go home.  Could this have not played a part in his "potential" decision?  Maybe he felt what it is like to play in front of friends and family instead of crazy fans (like me) who scream nonsensically until the game is over and then post on these message boards afterwards.  I am by no means insulting any of us, but to some, that could be a bit intense, especially if UK Blue Blood is not instilled in you since birth.  Also, when looking at the recruiting situation for next year, Liggins, Miller and Galloway are all within 2 inches of being the same height as Jasper and more or less the same type of player (big gaurd/small forward).  I am sure that this has crossed his mind, as has the return of Meeks.  Maybe he sees his future here looking bleak.  I personally have already said that he is my favorite Wildcat... and I like him because he is no dummy.  Maybe he's read the tea leaves, and they are pointing toward a brighter future in California?  Can you blame him if that is in fact his decision?  At the end of the day, he doesn't owe people like me anything, just his family and himself.  I wish he would stay, but most of all, I wish him the best.

oh and honestly,
I went to UK for four years (1998 to 2001) and passed several basketball players weekly on campus.  I never saw one of them with "leggy blondes" and in fact on more than one occasion sort of felt sorry for them because they were always by themselves, sort of like Zoo animals on display.  Everyone stared at them in awe, but few actually wanted to be
"that guy".  I sincerely doubt "leggy blondes" are even a remote factor in his decision making process, after all, if that's what he wants, he is from California.

Let's assume he is indeed unhappy (which may be untrue).  My guess is he does not like being recruited over again and again.

Jasper=Class Act
Right after the season was over, my 12 year old nephew and my brother in law saw Jasper in the mall..My nephew went over to get his autograph and Jasper was more than happy to sign for him..My brother-in-law told him that all UK fans were proud of him and the team..He said Jasper was VERY appreciative of the comment..He also said that Jasper seemed a little embarrassed to be signing an autograph, as if here were not used to it..either way, he made my nephew's day and I really appreciate that.

I'm all for showing appreciation but
Isn't all of this just a little overboard?  Of course we love Jasper and of course we'll miss him if he decides to leave UK.  But, these postings and these ramblings just feed into the national sense that UK fans are loony. If he stays, it will not be because of an onslaught of internet message boards and blogs announcing their appreciation.

I think Derrick is a great kid and he's a talent we'll miss for sure.  But, this kind of stuff is embarassing.  I know we all love him.  He knows it too.  You know why?  Because he plays BASKETBALL at KENTUCKY.  These players don't sit in their dorm rooms after playing before 24,000 fans day in and out, thinking a fan in section 232, row F seat 19 didn't send him any "love".

We'll miss him and we'll wish him well if he goes.  But, let that be it.  All of this sudden ego stroking is enough.  The kid is 20, not 6.

I agree..
finally someone else with on here who is willing to call it as it is.

Loony
If showing appreciation for a player is "Loony" - than get me a ticket on the next Loony train out of here.

Everyone on here knows how UK fans feel about the players.

Look at how everyone wanted to have Pelphrey as a coach - even though his only claim to fame is a mediocre season with a loaded Arkansas team.  How about Travis Ford?  One NCAA tournament appearance and everyone is ready for him to be the coach.  If either one of these guys were not former players they would not even be in the conversation.

If DJ is homesick and wants to transfer than godspeed DJ and thank you for service to the BBN.

The Team
Our seniors also received a ton of recognition because we had all watched these guys for four years and for the first time they were playing the game with the heart and skill that we had all been waiting on and hoping for.  How many people have commented that they had all but "given up" on Joe and Ramel as far as being "team leaders?"  The ovation the seniors got had been storing for four years so ofcourse it was an eruption.  P-Pat was a phenom - a freshman force we, as fans, hadnt seen in some time.  He was fresh, new, and amazingly skilled so he received an fan eruption as well.  With these factors, along with the injuries that plagued our Wildcats, I can see that Jasper did not receive a lion's share of the praise and recognition but I feel like he was always spoken of and seen in a positive light among the fan base.  I think it does speak for him though, whether he realizes it or not.  With all the problems that were happening this season, Jasper was "Old Reliable" - he continued to perform game after game, both offensively and defensively.  It wasnt necessary to "stay on" Jasper, he just always did his job so attention was focused elsewhere.  He was, in taken for granted because he appeared so self sufficient.  I believe that had the team's overall situation been different from the start (ie: no horrendous season start, everyone healthy) that Derrick Jasper would have been MUCH more in the spotlight.  He was, in a sense, a victim of circumstance.  Next season will be a different story - watch for Jasper on the front page.

In Addition
Also, Jasper is a point guard and has been his whole life.  I'm pretty sure he's used to being the guy who makes the play happen, but doesn't always make the headline- that's the nature of being a PG.

IMO, some UK fans are acting like he is asking to be babied and coddled over, when he is, in fact an adult who makes his own decisions. If he's got the NBA in his future, he'll have to get over his homesickness, and even higher demands than at his time at UK.  And, you have to know he knows all of this.

And, if you really believe IF he DOES transfer that it's because of "homesickness" or because of lack of "appreciation", I've got some land for sale in Argentina.

Just wish him the best, thank him for his time- but don't let his last thoughts of UK fans be begging ones that sound so pathetic and sad.

by sherwood8 on Apr 17, 2008 11:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think ...
anyone is begging here.  I think Jasper was unappreciated by many in the Big Blue Nation for the extraordinary effort he put in, and I thought it was high time he gets some recognition, whether he stays or goes.

Let's not make this into something it isn't.  Many fans, including me, want him to stay.  We want him to feel right at home.  As far as I know, he never mentioned not being appreciated to anyone, but that part of the story was out there from reliable sources, and quite frankly, I think there is some truth to that.  But if Jasper can't handle the separation from hearth and home, he has a lot of company, and I understand.

We will never know exactly what he was said or is thinking, but I thought it was fair and right that we give him a little more love.  Joe and Ramel and the coach got a lot, and they earned it, but Jasper was often an afterthought.  This whole episode has made me realize that, and I thought it was time to do something about it.

That's all.  No begging, no pleading, no nothing.  Just some overdue appreciation for a guy that earned it in pain and silence.

Look at past tapes
and see if you notice that Billy was really strict with Jasper on the sidelines.  I noticed that last few regular season games that Jasper got an earful from coach.  I dont' know if that has something to do with it or not, but Jasper certainly never played like he was mad.  He is a good kid.  But Billy G may not be for him.  That is ok.  We shouldn't begrudge the kid for that and we certainly shouldnt' blame coach.  I am a little nervous about this happening in the signing period though.
