Time for a little concern, and some long overdue recognition
Word on the street is that Derrick Jasper is feeling unappreciated for his desperate efforts to get back on the floor this past year. There is also credible information that Derrick is feeling alienated from the Big Blue Nation.
That is wrong. Jasper gave a superhuman effort this past season, and without him we would have never had a chance to continue our NCAA streak. He is a piece that we simply cannot replace, not because of his skills or his size, but because of his heart. No bigger and more passionate heart exists on the Kentucky team, and news of his unhappiness makes me very concerned.
But instead of just worrying about it, I am issuing a clarion call. Let's have a little Derrick Jasper appreciation around here. How 'bout a little love for a young man who has traveled far from hearth and home and fought through a very difficult and significant knee surgery to find a way to contribute to this team? He ignored the pain of the injury and the pain of constant accolades to practically everyone else on the team while his incredible contribution went largely unremarked.
Why did that happen? I don't know. It seems that we have taken for granted his extraordinary effort to get back on the floor and play through the discomfort of his surgical aftermath. Gillispie got co-coach of the year. Bradley and Crawford were recognized with all-SEC honors and plaudits from the fans. All were justly deserved.
But where was our recognition of the bravest man of all? Where was our amazement for his effort and determination? Where were my articles about his astonishing improvement in 3-point shooting, his great defense and rebounding, his constant and unforgettable effort to get the ball in scoring position despite being hampered by an injury so severe he had no business being on the court?
I don't know. But I do know this -- Derrick Jasper, we need and want you to stay at Kentucky. A lot. No, one hell of a lot.
So let's hear it for Derrick, the quiet, almost unnoticed, but absolutely indispensable Wildcat who delivered not just great shooting and great rebounding, but without whom our success last year would not have been possible.
We love you, Derrick. Thanks for being a Wildcat, and we look forward to seeing you back next year, 100% healed and ready to lead this team to success. Without your efforts, this last year would likely have been counted a failure, but because of them, it was a success.

Update [2008-4-16 10:16:48 by Truzenzuzex]: Matt Jones has an encouraging update on the situation.
Update [2008-4-16 13:20:34 by Truzenzuzex]: Matt has updated his story above, and now it is a little less encouraging. Keep your fingers crossed.
Update [2008-4-16 22:48:17 by Truzenzuzex]: Galloway is officially a Wildcat, and has signed his LOI. Welcome to the Big Blue, Kevin [thanks to kykat51 for the link].

Without Jasper...
Jasper didn't make an immediate contribution (San Diego game @ Rupp), but it wasn't long after that until he was able to rehab his knee to the point he could give significant minutes and make MAJOR contributions to the SEC run.
As sophomore, he shouldn't worry about it, his time and recognition is coming. UK needs him and I'm sure he'll deliver just as he did this year.

Jasper
I feel all Kentucky basketball players know they are the most loved and appreciated athletes in D-1 basketball, and don't have to be constantly reminded of this affection the fans have.

Just wondering what the source is for this?
Are Dynasty Defenders stirring up trouble again?? I'll pack my bags here in Raleigh and come on up and whoop some tail on behalf of Mr. Jasper if need be. Just say the word Tru and I'm there!
Derrick, you're heart and will this past season were likely the most direct reason for your team's change of fortune come conference play. Your efforts will surely not be forgotten.

No ...
I wanted to get out in front on this because I am sure he wouldn't want this to say "for members only." I generally don't repeat stuff like this from TCP until it becomes public from other sources for my own rather quirky ethical reasons, but this is a little different.

Jasper Rules
Just so this doesn't look like a "reaction" to Tru's post... I was giving at least giving him a little love, but not enough. I haven't bragged on him too much because I try to stay at least somewhat on topic.

I'm also on the record how high I am on tall guards (too many comments to list). Jasper definitely fits that mold.
He did an incredible job of being tough and playing through his injury. I'm recovering from an injury of my own, and I wish I could do as well as he has!
He has done an AWESOME job in the off-season improving his shot. That kind of personal dedication is what makes a player great.
He's got great heart - when he messes up on a play, you can see the frustration on his face. He really wants to do well for his team and it shows. He's clearly got an emotional investment in the team's success. I can really sympathize with this a lot I think because I'm the same way (even though my endeavors aren't basketball related).
If you look at when the team started to improve, it was when Derrick Jasper came back. Yes, there was some definite improvement to Bradley and Crawford, but I think it's more than coincidence that the real improvements in results came when Jasper returned. My friends and I talked about it all the time during the season how much better the team looked when Jasper returned. It seemed like all the haphazardness of our offense just evaporated when Jasper started playing. He was creating shots for his teammates and taking advantages of weak spots in the defense.
He played great defense, even with a bum knee, against smaller, faster players.
He had to play the 4 position at times after Patterson went down. It's not his position, so it didn't show him in his best light, but he did it anyway, without complaint, for the team. because he's the only one that could do it.
Just for reality's sake, if there's one knock on Jasper, he still has some nervousness issues, like Jeff Sheppard had. He hasn't yet been able to hit the clutch shot - but that's OKAY! He's just a sophomore who, like his whole class, has been through 2 coaches in 2 years and all of that turmoil, plus the injury. Still, I am confident he will overcome these and transition from great to awesome by his senior year and become the next Jeff Sheppard (or better!).
I think what endears people to Bradley and Crawford is first, that they were seniors, so they get celebrated more for their UK accomplishments because there aren't going to be any more. And most importantly, it's the psychology of the UK fan base: it's a mostly Christian group, and the story of the Prodigal Son is well drilled therein. The prodigal son is celebrated more than the steadfast son (or even Job) in the Christian tradition, and that's not fair, that's just how it is.
I think part of Jasper's discontentment might be - Gillispie has recruited 2 players (Galloway, Liggins) already that are "Jasper-replacements" i.e. 1/3 types. But what he needs to understand is these guys are going to be new next year and Jasper will be a junior with 2 years of good playing experience. We need to have someone (Liggins) when he graduates!
He's doing great and I've never listed his position as "needs help" from new recruits in any of my forum posts. I've always said the positions where we need help are a backup 2 guard to replace Legion, and most prominently, a 4/5 guy to back up Patterson and Stevenson. Derrick is a big part of our foundation and we need to build around him.
I'd like to see Jasper play the point next year. He did a great job with it in the 2007 season, especially for a freshman, plus now he has a deadly 3-point shot, and he'll be at full strength for 2009, barring any injuries.
If any UK fan doesn't like Jasper's game, they're smoking crack, that's all there is to it.
Anyway, sorry Derrick, for all the man-love. But I just like your game.

Jasper was my favorite player this year
He did great for a sophomore returning from surgery. I do agree that he deals with nerves from time to time, but he'll grow out of that. Was there really a source for this topic? I am not saying you are creating stories, I am just shocked I guess. How many times did you all hear Coach G. talk about Derrick Jasper and how he was his favorite kid and how he wished everyone could have his heart? I thought the season was full of suspense... geessh.

Derrick Jasper-Your a true inspiration.
I have a clear image in my mind, that during the 2nd half of the game, Derrick came down awkwardly on his injured knee. Derrick winced in pain, but once again he forced himself to continue to compete hard as the Cats fought hard to win the game.
I proudly called my brother in KY before the game to let him know I was at the game site an hour before tipoff. My brother wondered why I would drive 18 hours to view a game that " we were supposed to lose". I told him then, and I continue to feel this way. "It is the least I can do for a team that has worked their rear ends off to put themselves in the tournament, especially after such a difficult start to the season."
Derrick, how can any true Cat fan not appreciate how you lead the team (by example) on pure guts and inspiration for most of conference play. Oh yeah, then there was your incredible game against the Gators to put us in March madness.
Derrick, there are folks all over the country that recognize your value on our team. We need you back for the next two years.
Sincerely,
Gary Riddell

Stunned
I was just thinking about Jasper last night actually, I was listening to ESPN radio talking about the NBA and they mentioned that Darius Miles was getting ready to be cut finally because he hasn't played a game in over two years after micro-fracture surgery on his knee. Two years! For a pro! For Derrick to fight back and contribute mere months after a surgery that is known to end careers, I have always been impressed.
Early in Jasper's freshman year, he was my favorite player on the entire team just because he played so hard. Any success that this team may have for the next two years really does depend in large part on the health and development of Jasper. If he can get his confidence and health back to become a real threat in addition to a healthy Meeks and Patterson, this team can be really dangerous. Without him... I don't think we can.

This does not diminish the admiration and respect we have for those who have stayed the course and been there, day in and day out, contributing with superflourous zeal, as Derrick has done.

Wow
I believe that if Jasper did not play last year UK barely goes .500 in the SEC, ends the season with a losing record, and misses the tournament.
Jasper is the tie that binds on this team. Derrick - make no mistake the Big Blue Nation admires you and your efforts. We do not want you to go anywhere.

D-Jazz
He needs to look at all of the other sub-plots this year along with his. As the year wrapped up he became that future all pro lineman standing up defenders so his quarterback can throw his way to the first round and the glory that follows. Joe just put too many in the hole, Bradley clutched a few too many and BCG gained much love. For a team not in the top 20 and playing out in the first round of the SEC and NCAA the media only has room for 2 stories and 3 TOPS. That sucks.
Next season is your year DJ! You, Meeks and P-Pat will be the freaking All Steve Austin team and the story will be told far and wide.

calming effect
I am truly hoping this is just a case of a young man who has some doubts about his future and is just searching for some answers. Who knows, maybe something happened to him personally and he is home sick. DJ strikes me as a person who is reserved and somewhat introverted. Sure, you can say he shouldn't need to be told he is appreciated, but every person is different and some need more obvious gestures of appreciation than others to improve their confidence. Whatever the reason for his doubts about UK, I hope BCG, the coaching staff and his family can convince him that he is truly in-valuable to his team. Hang in there Derrick, your day of recognition will come, you have the heart of a champion and you will get your day in the sun.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain
Gillispie is known as being tough on the players but of ALL the guys on this team this year, I think he was incredibly kind about and very high on Derrick Jasper. He talked in the media very positively about his abilities and about his drive and his heart. He got plenty of minutes. I know UK fans can at times be unfairly tough on certain players--Sheray Thomas comes to mind. But Derrick Jasper?!? I've never heard a fan in person or one on the internet at any of the usual fan gathering places say much negative about Jasper at all. Ever. NOTHING beyond innocuous stuff like "wish he'd shoot more" or something like that. The opposite even--I think fans are very fond of his game and his grit in coming back from the injury. I certainly can't picture him not getting the love on campus, or when he actually meets fans in person. The crowds certainly always came out in force to support him and his team on the court. I'm not sure what more could be done to prove to a player that YES we like you, YES we appreciate you, and YES we want you here.
I'm not trying to belittle what he may or may not be feeling. For the record, he's one of my favorite players on the team, me having a fondness for tall guards myself.
I guess what I'm saying is that if he's really considering a transfer (oh please god no), or if he did consider it in the past, there's surely GOT to be more to it that not feeling the love from the program and the fans, 'cause looking at it from the outside, he has certainly gotten that.
RE Ford to OSU: OMG!!!! I guess it's perfect timing--we can now trade fretting about our coach taking another job for worrying that our PG will transfer.

Spoiled kid?
When these kids transfer (and lets remember that they are kids) there is often more involved than just basketball. This isn't some NBA star like Kobe Bryant demanding a trade if something isn't done to make the team better. This is a kid who might be having problems in US History for all we know.

I don't agree ...
There were many people, particularly on The Cats Pause, who were constantly critical of Jasper's effort. He went through a lot of pain an difficulty trying to get back on the floor and help the team, only to find some fans couldn't care less if he stays or goes because they don't like the fact that he would rather pass than shoot.
That's discouraging, and he has long been rumored to be homesick. Combine the two, and you have a recipe for transfer. It isn't coddling to realize that we fans took him for granted, and I think we did.
My wife recently left her job for another. Why? She felt unappreciated. This is a middle-aged woman, and I know exactly where she was coming from. Nothing will make you want a change more than when the people you are putting forth extraordinary effort to please don't appreciate it.
The bottom line is, Jasper was largely overlooked this year. He could have hung them up, taken a medical redshirt and come back next year. Instead, he got back out on the floor, played through the pain and was instrumental in the success we had. His thanks? A collective yawn from the Big Blue Nation.
Now we get "If he feels this way he's spoiled?" Not picking on you, you aren't the only one, but c'mon ... this kid deserves better from us, and he is right to expect it.

Actually...
It is important two remember two things before starting a name calling campaign against the kid:
- At this point only a very limited number of people know exactly what the story behind the story is. Could be personal issues, school issues, or very possibly basketball related issues, at this point who knows.
- This is a kid were are talking about and he has every right to be concerned with his own future. Kids are sometimes prone to kneejerk reactions very similar to those displayed by "fans" who immediately jump to conclusions and lead with name calling. ;)

Jasper might just be depressed.
After a long period of extended effort and stress, people often experience a period of depression and then come out of it before the next period of effort begins. Jasper may just be going through something like this.
Anyway, he is the man who makes the Cats go! Most of us realize that and appreciate his effort. I seriously hope he stays.
