Scotty Hopson ...
... is a Volunteer.
Unless, of course, he changes his mind again.
Update [2008-4-2 8:26:42 by Truzenzuzex]: Seems Darius Miller is a 3rd team Parade All-American, and Hopson 2nd team. But check out this name on the 4th team Parade list -- Tyrelle Pryor, the #1 football recruit in America. Bound for Ohio State. Wow.

Miller AND Hopson Both Parade HS All-Americans
Liggins not eligible because he was ineligible for HS basketball (turned 20) in 2008 so he played Prep instead.

Love of the game...
I may be wrong but I think Billy Clyde is the perfect fit and hope I'm right. As long as he's here UK is going to make fools of the folks who have been sayin "tradition" is dead.

No Worries
Anyone thinking OK ST is going to pull Self or Billy G are kidding themselves.
I did think IU made about a good of a hire as possible for them in Tom Crean.
Not sure who OK ST will eventually wind up with.

I agree now, Tru
But as for UK's take: I don't see this as a blow to your program, other than projections that UT may become a real rival for a change. Your recruiting is fine.
by hooper on Apr 1, 2008 11:38 PM EDT 0 recs
Oh ...
Make no mistake, it is always nice to have people as talented as Hopson, but my opinion has always been that Hopson was not the right fit for UK. I just don't think he and Gillispie would have been a successful pairing.
Perhaps matriculating to UT was best all around.

Not so fast, Nation
Now, that was during the dark days and before the strong finish; however, if we can step outside our Big Blue Fog and see what the world looks like to other people, we might see some reasons why someone would actually prefer the Cherokee Strip to the Bluegrass, though the very idea seems to us like willingly choosing to live in the hills somewhere without running water, electricity or the Internet instead of in a nice pricey loft somewhere ... wait a minute ...
What kinds of things motivate people?
Money? Well, they can find it in Stillwater without the strings attached to Blue money.
Prestige? Well, if you win in Kentucky a lot, you can still have the boosters offering to buy your contract out so you will leave, while people put For Sale signs in your yard, etc. You have to keep winning to stay in Bracketville ... and the Bluegrass. You don't have to win as much or as often to be Cowboy King. Sure, the expectations are lower - but the rewards of taking a nearly-was team like OSU to great heights would be greater - and more easily attainable - than taking a perennial power like UK to where it is expected to be every year.
Challenge? Well, what's a greater challenge to a competitor - to do something no one else has ever done, as in build a champion at OSU, or kill yourself trying to replicate past success at UK? If you think about it, there are reasons to see such an opportunity as a greater challenge - depending on how you define it.
Security? Well, which school is going to pay you more for doing less over a longer period of time? Where do you stand a better chance of surviving longer? Whose fans will be more patient with less up front, and reward you more for less along the way, and wait longer for top success? Which school's administration is going to silently sit by while loonies tear you down because you have won a national title and record tournament success, etc?
Fan Support? Well, who will be satisfied more easily, and more regularly, and for longer? As wonderful as the past few weeks have been, BCG got a taste of the Dark Side of the Nation and has to know that he is only as good as his recent winning streak.
Independence? At which school will he have more freedom to do as he sees fit, how he sees fit, without constant media attention, stalking from the Fake Gimel Martinez, etc.? In which pond will he be a bigger fish - regardless of the size of the pond? Where will he face more coverage of off-campus issues?
Intangibles? Maybe BCG is like the many who do not believe there is life east of the Mississippi. Maybe he has his eyes on a job at Kansas and wants to move closer to wait for his buddy Bill to leave. Maybe he would like to be back out in the wilderness.
Friends, there is nothing on this planet that would drag any one of us away from our precious Old Kentucky Home. But there are reasons why someone actually could look the situation in the eye, size it up, try it on for size for a season, and then decide that UK is a great place, just not for him. I cannot imagine trading the chance for even one season at UK for a dozen anywhere else ... but I also must try to imagine someone doing just that for reasons that make sense to him. Billy Dee did it.
Finally, we must all remember that these decisions are made by folks who don't always think like we do or act like we think they ought to act. University administrators, well-funded powerful boosters and highly sought coaches are going to do what they decide they want to do, and the rest of us really only have two choices: get on the bandwagon, or get off. The bandwagon has its own agenda and exists in its own world - and we fans live in a delusional world of our own where we actually think we can do anything about our favorite teams somehow.
I would be sad to see Billy Gee return west - but I would not be surprised. We may be on the verge of seeing UK become a stepping stone, a resume builder, a place for promising coaches to come and leverage for cherry deals elsewhere, getting out of town before the honeymoon sours completely - as it always does these days. It may be that the kind of coach UK needs to come in and dig in and build for the future is exactly the same kind of coach the lunatic fringe won't wait for past the honeymoon.
On the other hand, as we have seen, maybe Billy Gee has his own ideas and is going to do what he wants to do, regardless of critics, and he is going to keep on doing it until he wins a national title or gets asked to leave, whichever comes first. He may be here for a good long time - but ultimately, he will be the one to decide that, and he just might decide otherwise, too.

What'cha ...
If Gillispie is unhappy here, as your rumor suggests, perhaps he should leave. Life is too short to be miserable.
If Gillispie goes elsewhere, we will find another coach. It happens, and quite frankly, there isn't a damn thing I or anyone else can do about it. Worrying, fretting, and cycling ourselves over it won't do anything but raise our blood pressure and shorten our lives. I intend to live long enough to see our next 8 championships.
What, me worry?

I don't believe it will happen for a second.
Gillispie is sad (today) but very happy at UK.
Someday (hopefully soon) he won't be sad.

I dont think so
Not to say Gillespie wouldnt leave in a million years but I dont think he or Self are going to leave their repsective positions whatever your friends, dad's long lost cousin said. I just dont buy into the whole I've got a friend close to the administration that says X is going to happen. It just doesnt ever turn out to be credible.

I also heard
I find 99% of the discussion on ASOB very interesting and logical, but this one is almost irrational.
There are a few people in this world who will ask for a demotion at their job to have less work and responsibility - call me crazy, but I think BCG is the antithesis of such a person though.
by cdnWildcatfan on Apr 2, 2008 12:52 PM EDT 0 recs
Irrational is as Irrational does
But the info doesn't mean anything is going to happen. It only means that some folks have been thinking about it.
Personally, I think anyone who would willingly leave the post of UK men's basketball head coach - or any UK coaching job, for that matter - would be acting irrationally. I think Ricky was crazy to leave, I think Tubby was crazy to leave, and I think Billy would be crazy to leave. But people are known to do crazy things - and they usually don't see the craziness in their actions that others might.
I'm with Truze on this one, as usual - I care not who shows up on the sideline or bench next spring, and I fear no transition. When the whistle blows, I will be there wearing the Blue and screaming my head off for whatever five guys showed up in their Blue to represent the great Commonwealth and its flagship, and I will support whoever the powers that be have hired as coach. I may have my own opinions and differences, but I will not take them out on the coach, staff or players - I do not have the right to do that, and neither do any of you.
Of course, maybe my UK football fanhood has altered my sense of reality here - but all that means is that I have enjoyed the recent successes more than most who were never in the stands during the dark times. So long as 11 guys show up in Blue at Commonwealth - or five at Rupp - we will rejoice in the blessing we have to watch and cheer them on, win or lose, Elite 8 or NIT, it's all about the privilege, not the right. A Kentucky birthright is its own blessing, but it does not include the right to winning in sports. That is a blessing and privilege all its own, and just God's generous gooey gravy on top of all the other blessings we Kentuckians already enjoy undeservedly every single day of our lucky lives. Amen. Hope BCG feels the blessings that are his, but if not, surely someone else will be more than happy to take his place. It'll be his loss, not ours.

"8 years about right for Pitino?"
I really felt and to this day still feel if Pitino had stayed, he would be viewed much the same way as coach k at duke or even Rupp in regards to longevity/sustained sucess at one school.

You are right,....
Take our Mr. Wildcat for instance. He's so much richer than most, even Mr. Pitino, that they have to hold his memorial service in Rupp.
Rick has stated, more than once, that his leaving UK was a mistake. Well, duh.

Mercer and Walker
I think Walker had a decent career. No All-Star appearances, but he had a few pretty good years. His problem is that he never met a shot he didn't like.
Mercer was a disappointment to me. He played a long time, but he never contributed like I thought he could.
The biggest shock to me, as far as being successful in the NBA, is Prince. I never thought he would have the great career he is enjoying. Plus, he represents UK in a classy and understated manner. Much the opposite of some of the clowns we see in professional sports.

Mercer
For whatever reason, he was not well liked by his teammates. Somewhat of a Me, Not We attitude.
Prince was 3-time All-SEC and 2-time A-A who can shoot and play D. No surprise (4 me) what we has done in NBA.
