Around SBN: Dolphins knock off Rams; get back into playoff race Bar-right-arrows

Scotty Hopson ...

... is a Volunteer.

Unless, of course, he changes his mind again.

Update [2008-4-2 8:26:42 by Truzenzuzex]:  Seems Darius Miller is a 3rd team Parade All-American, and Hopson 2nd team.  But check out this name on the 4th team Parade list -- Tyrelle Pryor, the #1 football recruit in America.  Bound for Ohio State.   Wow.

In perspective
Considering the other news of the day, calling this a "loss" just seems inappropriate. "Loss" is losing a legend and a former player forever in the same day. This is, at best, a disappointment. I'm sure the less sane among the fan base will start squawking if he comes back to torch UK, but for now, the Big Blue Nation's minds and hearts are on more important matters. Best of luck to Hopson... except against UK.

Miller AND Hopson Both Parade HS All-Americans

Liggins not eligible because he was ineligible for HS basketball (turned 20) in 2008 so he played Prep instead.

Hopson
While I wish he had chosen UK, best of luck to him and now that drama is over. This announcement is merely a blip on the screen with the news we've had today.

Oklahoma State
I hate to be one to continue to bring up rumors but Sutton just recently resigned from OK State.  Anyone else just a smidge concerned?

Nah ...
It just doesn't make sense to me.

Love of the game...
BG loves the game with a passion... as much as us much demanding cats fans. Basketball is the most important thing in his life, I simply can't see him going to a place where the fanbase isn't as enthused about the game as he is. They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach..  with Coach I think the way to his heart is basketball; there is no place to feed that love more than UK.

I may be wrong but I think Billy Clyde is the perfect fit and hope I'm right. As long as he's here UK is going to make fools of the folks who have been sayin "tradition" is dead.

Not Concerned At All
Gillispie will be UK coach whenever Okla St announces their new one.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 1, 2008 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

No Worries
No worries about G leaving.

Anyone thinking OK ST is going to pull Self or Billy G are kidding themselves.

I did think IU made about a good of a hire as possible for them in Tom Crean.

Not sure who OK ST will eventually wind up with.

IU
Crean to IU, but has anyone else heard rumors of Jordan Crawford to transfer?

Move on.........
to the next recruit.......Scotty will be where he wants to be.....again, the rebuilding at UK could take another year or so.  No worries here.

by Chuck Alexinis on Apr 1, 2008 11:19 PM EDT   0 recs

I agree now, Tru
that Hopson is no prank.  Having caught up with the news reels, I feel more confident about it.  He looks to be a good fit at UT; with Lofton and JaJuan on the way out, the Vols really need a good perimeter shooter.

But as for UK's take: I don't see this as a blow to your program, other than projections that UT may become a real rival for a change.  Your recruiting is fine.

by hooper on Apr 1, 2008 11:38 PM EDT   0 recs

Oh ...
I totally agree.  Quite frankly, we really don't need a shooting guard, we are in decent shape for people who can play that position.  What we really need is a big guy.  And we will get one, and a good one at that.

Make no mistake, it is always nice to have people as talented as Hopson, but my opinion has always been that Hopson was not the right fit for UK.  I just don't think he and Gillispie would have been a successful pairing.

Perhaps matriculating to UT was best all around.

Not so fast, Nation
The OSU opening has been known to many in Big XII circles for a long time. I think it was more than three months ago that I heard from a coach friend of Bill Self's that Self said - 1 - Sean was out, and 2 - BCG told Self he was unhappy at UK and interested in OSU.
Now, that was during the dark days and before the strong finish; however, if we can step outside our Big Blue Fog and see what the world looks like to other people, we might see some reasons why someone would actually prefer the Cherokee Strip to the Bluegrass, though the very idea seems to us like willingly choosing to live in the hills somewhere without running water, electricity or the Internet instead of in a nice pricey loft somewhere ... wait a minute ...
What kinds of things motivate people?
Money? Well, they can find it in Stillwater without the strings attached to Blue money.
Prestige? Well, if you win in Kentucky a lot, you can still have the boosters offering to buy your contract out so you will leave, while people put For Sale signs in your yard, etc. You have to keep winning to stay in Bracketville ... and the Bluegrass. You don't have to win as much or as often to be Cowboy King. Sure, the expectations are lower - but the rewards of taking a nearly-was team like OSU to great heights would be greater - and more easily attainable - than taking a perennial power like UK to where it is expected to be every year.
Challenge? Well, what's a greater challenge to a competitor - to do something no one else has ever done, as in build a champion at OSU, or kill yourself trying to replicate past success at UK? If you think about it, there are reasons to see such an opportunity as a greater challenge - depending on how you define it.
Security? Well, which school is going to pay you more for doing less over a longer period of time? Where do you stand a better chance of surviving longer? Whose fans will be more patient with less up front, and reward you more for less along the way, and wait longer for top success? Which school's administration is going to silently sit by while loonies tear you down because you have won a national title and record tournament success, etc?
Fan Support? Well, who will be satisfied more easily, and more regularly, and for longer? As wonderful as the past few weeks have been, BCG got a taste of the Dark Side of the Nation and has to know that he is only as good as his recent winning streak.
Independence? At which school will he have more freedom to do as he sees fit, how he sees fit, without constant media attention, stalking from the Fake Gimel Martinez, etc.? In which pond will he be a bigger fish - regardless of the size of the pond? Where will he face more coverage of off-campus issues?
Intangibles? Maybe BCG is like the many who do not believe there is life east of the Mississippi. Maybe he has his eyes on a job at Kansas and wants to move closer to wait for his buddy Bill to leave. Maybe he would like to be back out in the wilderness.
Friends, there is nothing on this planet that would drag any one of us away from our precious Old Kentucky Home. But there are reasons why someone actually could look the situation in the eye, size it up, try it on for size for a season, and then decide that UK is a great place, just not for him. I cannot imagine trading the chance for even one season at UK for a dozen anywhere else ... but I also must try to imagine someone doing just that for reasons that make sense to him. Billy Dee did it.
Finally, we must all remember that these decisions are made by folks who don't always think like we do or act like we think they ought to act. University administrators, well-funded powerful boosters and highly sought coaches are going to do what they decide they want to do, and the rest of us really only have two choices: get on the bandwagon, or get off. The bandwagon has its own agenda and exists in its own world - and we fans live in a delusional world of our own where we actually think we can do anything about our favorite teams somehow.
I would be sad to see Billy Gee return west - but I would not be surprised. We may be on the verge of seeing UK become a stepping stone, a resume builder, a place for promising coaches to come and leverage for cherry deals elsewhere, getting out of town before the honeymoon sours completely - as it always does these days. It may be that the kind of coach UK needs to come in and dig in and build for the future is exactly the same kind of coach the lunatic fringe won't wait for past the honeymoon.
On the other hand, as we have seen, maybe Billy Gee has his own ideas and is going to do what he wants to do, regardless of critics, and he is going to keep on doing it until he wins a national title or gets asked to leave, whichever comes first. He may be here for a good long time - but ultimately, he will be the one to decide that, and he just might decide otherwise, too.

What'cha ...
gonna do?

If Gillispie is unhappy here, as your rumor suggests, perhaps he should leave.  Life is too short to be miserable.

If Gillispie goes elsewhere, we will find another coach.  It happens, and quite frankly, there isn't a damn thing I or anyone else can do about it.  Worrying, fretting, and cycling ourselves over it won't do anything but raise our blood pressure and shorten our lives.  I intend to live long enough to see our next 8 championships.

What, me worry?

I Have Friend(s) Who Coach In Big 12
They said the same thing as your friend.

I don't believe it will happen for a second.

Gillispie is sad (today) but very happy at UK.

Someday (hopefully soon) he won't be sad.

NO
Not that - the comment directly above mine is what I was referring to.  Where Forty says that Gillispie isnt leaving.  I guess I didnt post very well.  I NEVER want Gillispie to leave!  I LOVE BCG!

My Friend(s) Told Me About The BCG-2-Okla St BUT
I don't believe they are currently accurate.

I heard this in January. I don't think it is accurate. Don't know back then.

Gillispie will be at UK, not Okla St.

I dont think so
Just my opinion but I dont see it happening man.

Not to say Gillespie wouldnt leave in a million years but I dont think he or Self are going to leave their repsective positions whatever your friends, dad's long lost cousin said. I just dont buy into the whole I've got a friend close to the administration that says X is going to happen. It just doesnt ever turn out to be credible.

DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

by davw83 on Apr 2, 2008 9:30 AM EDT   0 recs

i completely agree with davw83....
If the "friend in the administration that says X" were often true, Billy Donavan would be our head coach this year and we would have played in the NIT.  Roy Williams would be in the NBA, and Rick Pitino would be at Florida.  If CBCG goes, then let him, he wasn't who wanted here anyway and his actions will have been the determining factor for that.  If he stays (which I imagine he will) then he is every bit of the great coach I, and most Kentuckians, thought he was.  I don't see how you sit next to Bill Keightley on his deathbed, call him your best friend and leave two weeks later.  Whether he wants to believe it or not, CBCG is now a part of UK folklore, amazing turn around by a team that tugged at the heart strings of the Big Blue Nation like no other in recent history and two weeks later holding the hand of a legend as he passed.  That would be tough to leave if it were me.  I believe I would think I had a pretty special situation.
I need a Sea of Blue because I am surrounded by Tennessee orange and Vandy gold!

by sleepytimetea on Apr 2, 2008 10:12 AM EDT   0 recs

also,
big blue nation maybe tough to deal with at times, but don't pretend for one second that T. Boone Pickens isn't and don't think Billy Clyde doesn't already know that.  TBPickens has said that he is tired of OK state playing second fiddle in the state and will do whatever in his power to change that and that money is of no consequence... that sounds like one crazy rich man to me, maybe with loftier expectations than us?.   Here is another reason BCG will stay here, Billy Gillispie is a native Texan, Texans hate Oklahoma on principle.  Duh, it would be like a Kentucky coach going to Louisville... wait.  Do I sound worried....?

I also heard
that Bo Ryan is leaving his job at Wisconsin to coach Marquette and Davidson is waiting for the Final 4 to be over so they can announce Roy Williams as their next head coach.
I find 99% of the discussion on ASOB very interesting and logical, but this one is almost irrational.
There are a few people in this world who will ask for a demotion at their job to have less work and responsibility - call me crazy, but I think BCG is the antithesis of such a person though.

by cdnWildcatfan on Apr 2, 2008 12:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Irrational is as Irrational does
Hey, guys, I never said anyone claimed that any change was definitely going to happen. I only related a conversation that has been corroborated by UK 40 and others. I wouldn't waste your time with BS I found on some silly blog. If I didn't have trustworthy sources, I would not pass this info along.
But the info doesn't mean anything is going to happen. It only means that some folks have been thinking about it.
Personally, I think anyone who would willingly leave the post of UK men's basketball head coach - or any UK coaching job, for that matter - would be acting irrationally. I think Ricky was crazy to leave, I think Tubby was crazy to leave, and I think Billy would be crazy to leave. But people are known to do crazy things - and they usually don't see the craziness in their actions that others might.
I'm with Truze on this one, as usual - I care not who shows up on the sideline or bench next spring, and I fear no transition. When the whistle blows, I will be there wearing the Blue and screaming my head off for whatever five guys showed up in their Blue to represent the great Commonwealth and its flagship, and I will support whoever the powers that be have hired as coach. I may have my own opinions and differences, but I will not take them out on the coach, staff or players - I do not have the right to do that, and neither do any of you.
Of course, maybe my UK football fanhood has altered my sense of reality here - but all that means is that I have enjoyed the recent successes more than most who were never in the stands during the dark times. So long as 11 guys show up in Blue at Commonwealth - or five at Rupp - we will rejoice in the blessing we have to watch and cheer them on, win or lose, Elite 8 or NIT, it's all about the privilege, not the right. A Kentucky birthright is its own blessing, but it does not include the right to winning in sports. That is a blessing and privilege all its own, and just God's generous gooey gravy on top of all the other blessings we Kentuckians already enjoy undeservedly every single day of our lucky lives. Amen. Hope BCG feels the blessings that are his, but if not, surely someone else will be more than happy to take his place. It'll be his loss, not ours.

Tubby NOT Crazy To Leave
10 years at UK is enough. 13 was too long for Hall. 8 years about right for Pitino.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 2, 2008 8:03 PM EDT   0 recs

I agree
Since Rupp retired the coaches seem to be hanging around for about an average of 10 years.

It's a grueling job, no doubt.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 2, 2008 8:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

"8 years about right for Pitino?"
Please explain, my feelings like many others here changed for RP when he accepted the louisville job, but when he first bolted to the Cs I was crushed.

I really felt and to this day still feel if Pitino had stayed, he would be viewed much the same way as coach k at duke or even Rupp in regards to longevity/sustained sucess at one school.

by wldcatsfreak on Apr 2, 2008 8:22 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pitino
I've always felt he would have cracked 1,000 wins, and won at least 3-4 Nat'l Titles if he had stayed at UK until his retirement.

By the way, congrats to D. Miller for his Parade All-America honor.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 2, 2008 9:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pitino Can't Stay ANYWHERE Much Longer Than 8 Yrs
5 years Boston U. 2 years NY Knicks assistant. 2 years Providence. 2 years Knicks head coach. 8 years UK (nearly left in 1996). 4 years Celtics. Now 7 years at Louisville.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 3, 2008 6:17 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

3 or 4 nat'l championships is not equal to...
90 million dollars and partial ownership of the Celtics... I believe was the offer... or something similar.  UK is rich, but not that rich.  He is Rick Pitino and the dollar signs were as big as his ego.  College National Championships were old news to him.  He'd failed in the NBA in round one, here was his new challenge.  He basically put together a team of former UK players in the NBA though, funny how that never panned out for him.
I need a Sea of Blue because I am surrounded by Tennessee orange and Vandy gold!

by sleepytimetea on Apr 2, 2008 11:41 PM EDT   0 recs

You are right,....
....money can't compare to National Titles and how beloved he would have been in Kentucky.

Take our Mr. Wildcat for instance. He's so much richer than most, even Mr. Pitino, that they have to hold his memorial service in Rupp.

Rick has stated, more than once, that his leaving UK was a mistake. Well, duh.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 3, 2008 12:04 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

and I mean that in no disrespect to the players...
I was excited to see so many of them on the same team.  I just was surprised to see it not work in the NBA like it did in college.

Mercer and Walker
I thought out of that group in '96, that Walker and Mercer('97) would make the best pros.

I think Walker had a decent career. No All-Star appearances, but he had a few pretty good years. His problem is that he never met a shot he didn't like.

Mercer was a disappointment to me. He played a long time, but he never contributed like I thought he could.

The biggest shock to me, as far as being successful in the NBA, is Prince. I never thought he would have the great career he is enjoying. Plus, he represents UK in a classy and understated manner. Much the opposite of some of the clowns we see in professional sports.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 3, 2008 12:41 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mercer
Through Natalie, I've gotten to talk to some of his former NBA teammates over the years.

For whatever reason, he was not well liked by his teammates. Somewhat of a Me, Not We attitude.

Prince was 3-time All-SEC and 2-time A-A who can shoot and play D. No surprise (4 me) what we has done in NBA.
