Here's a good argument for Tay's all star candidacy. A good read.

Kinda wierd how I start this post out with a TP story again.

This has nothing to do with
UK basketball in any way but I thought others might find this article interesting. It deals with scholarships in the nonrevenue sports.

Dumb Question
On the chart displaying the "All SEC" teams, why dont any of the Kentucky players have a position listed?

by kentuckygirl0724 on Mar 11, 2008 2:31 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

not sure about that, but...
I do know Coach Gillispie has said he doesn't like to put positions in for players, doesn't want to limit them to a specific position...

Really I have no idea, just a suggestion.

by BigSkyCat on Mar 11, 2008 2:44 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Screw what I leared in Kindergarten!
This sharing stuff makes me sick. Somebody in the SEC needs to man-up and give these awards to the most deserving person and stop copping out by naming co-winners. There are no ties in American sports!

What would you suggest?
Since the decision is made by a panel of voters, what would be your suggestion?  Considering its Pearl, I'd say no-holds-barred wrestling it out.

I'd kill for a great armwrestling competition.  I can just see Billy Clyde turning his trucker hat backwards just before he takes Pearl "Over The Top."

My solution is simple...
face to face, battle-style "yo mama" jokes. Have any of you seen the NHL commerical with Ryan Miller and another doing this? Awesome idea! This would solve all our our problems, imagine PPat against Calathes' mama. If that poor boy looks that way, imagine her...

Calathes's Mama
Did you get a good look at Calathes on CBS last Sunday?  Yo mama
jokes with Calathes for PP would be like shootin fish in a barrel.

Congrats to BCG!!

Seth Davis
I don't think we've got any Seth Davis fans here, but he says Kentucky is dancing even with a first-game loss in the SEC tourney. This is one time I hope he's right.

ALL SEC first team
I would have switched Crawford and Bradley on the SEC 1st and 2nd teams.  Just an opinion, and not really a strong one.

I do not understand Lucas being all-sec first team frosh; to me he was a very irrelevant player and very poor on defense.

PP and Calathes sharing FOY made sense as did the shared coaches of the year; all in all it looks like the SEC got it right.

Is there a most improved player award?  Can you say Perry Stevenson?  I once posted I hope he makes me eat my words that he was only posting #s due to PP; I am choking on those words.  His monster game against Florida proved he belongs and is capable of being a star.

I do believe PP was instrumental in Perry's improved play.  However, he is doing it on his own now.  More importantly, Perry.. and I can't believe I am going to type this.. Perry is going to make PP a better player next year.

by BeatUL on Mar 12, 2008 7:25 AM EDT   0 recs

RE: Lucas
I certainly wouldn't put Lucas up there with PPat and Calathes... but I don't know who else in the league I'd put on the team over him.  Hell, they've got almost 20 guys on there already it seems like.

Can anyone 'splain to me
why Arizona has an RPI rating of 29? Yes, they played a tough schedule but they lost to most of those teams! AZ is 18-13 overall, 5-9 against top 50 and only 12-13 against top 150. Compare this to the Cats who are 18-11 and 12-11 against top 150 and yet we are ranked 48th, 19 places behind them?

Great story by Wetzel.
This should be sent to every a-hole that either wrote about or responded to blogs saying pearl was screwed/robbed.  While I conceed he has done an impressive job making ut's mens team respectable in the SEC in a short time, in no way did he overcome the obstacles BCG did this year.  Fighting injuries, attitudes, and a defection all while trying to install a new system are challenges where lesser coaches would wilt.  Oh and by the way he did this with the eyes of the countries most demanding fanbase focused squarely on him.  Anyone else want to take a shot at that?

P.S.  Anyone who fails to realize that BCG way out coached pearl in their meeting down in Knoxville is delusional.

john stewart
that was a good article to remember a young kid taken before his time. was surprised they didn't mention that on what would have been his senior day as a wildcat, tubby brought his parents out and they announced his name. i think he even gave them a jersey like all the seniors get. i thought that was one the coolest moments, not only at a senior day, i've ever heard of. would have loved to have seen that scene.

Another Possible UK Recruit (From ESPN Scouts)
Mar. 11
Clark Stepp, PG
Pippa Passes, KY
Class: 2008
June Buchanan School

Position Rank: 156

Clark Stepp attends UK-UF game
Senior guard Clark Stepp went on an official visit to Kentucky on Sunday to watch the Wildcats take on Florida, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports. The 6-foot-4 Stepp recently became the first player in state history to surpass 3,000 points and 1,000 assists in his career. Other schools interested in the Kentucky native are Mississippi State, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, and Morehead State.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 12, 2008 7:18 PM EDT   0 recs

Clark Stepp
comes from a great family.  His dad and two uncles all led the State in scoring in high school.

Ervin Stepp (his uncle) averaged over 50 points a game one season.  His uncles Ervin and Jimm went on to play at EKU where is was actually Jimm that shined more (I believe Jimm Stepp was in the top 5 in free throw % as a senior at EKU; obscure but cool for him).  Ervin was recruited by Joe B. but when he had knee troubles UK backed off.

National CoY
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3290729

Apparently, just because you aren't even recognized as the best coach in your conference doesn't mean that you can't be national coach of the year.  Pearl, Calipari, Painter from Purdue, and the coach of Drake are the four finalists for National Coach of the Year.

Makes me want to puke.

by chirop1 on Mar 13, 2008 8:04 AM EDT   0 recs

Keno Davis...
is the Coach for Drake and easily deserves CoY. His Bulldogs were picked to finish 9th in the conference and started TWO walk-ons. They finished 28-4 and ranked in the top 20 and an NCAA bid.

If I had a vote....
...it would be a very tough decision between Matt Painter and Keno Davis.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 13, 2008 6:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

My Pick
I failed to mention what I would have picked there...  I'd go with Painter and then the Drake coach (Keno Davis).  There's no way I would have even considered Calipari for coach of the year.  Pearl I can sort of get on board with... but I firmly believe there are better coaching jobs out there this year.

"Where is ESPN Quality Control"
Once again Bilas slights UK.

What is his problem?

by Ken Howlett on Mar 13, 2008 11:47 AM EDT   0 recs

Pearl v. Gillispie
Short Post:

NO comparison between the two. One is a Barnum & Bailey reject who will never see a FF, except from the stands.

The other is a driven, born for the job, Hall of Famer in waiting.

UT fans are proving once again they should stick to football, The Midget Chesney, and recruiting felons for their pigskin team.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 13, 2008 11:55 AM EDT   0 recs

Yeah ...
I don't know what to make of it right now.

That is too bad for the kid.  With that said, we surely can't be talking about more than a couple of hundred dollars here, which looks like petty theft to me.  He isn't likely to do any jail time unless he has a record, and if he does, it wouldn't be more than a few months, I would think.

But what is a bit strange is that there was an indictment issued by a grand jury.  Usually, something like that would be investigated by the police and Carter arrested on an information rather than an indictment.  The fact that there is an indictment makes this look a bit more sinister than the facts seem to support, prima facia.

Theft by deception at $300 or less is a class A misdemeanor.  Above that, it is a class D felony.

Bilas and crap opinions
I love this site. I will always love this site.

We see things differently even when looking at the same things, we see different things and we all have opinions.

Just a little support for the Bilas bias I have. One only has to google the topic and the pages roll.

(I listed insider comments that were on google).
http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3281220&searchName=bilas_jay

http://www.wildcatfanreport.com/?p=367

http://logelevel.com/2008/03/07/jay-bilas-brings-the-pain-part-ii/

http://www.catszone.net/shootindex.html

Even at Syracuse: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=185&f=2825&t=2209692&sto=pagestart#s=185&f=2825&t =2209692

Anyway. Opinions are important and when presented in civil ways (maybe hate was over the line) they should be tolerated. I don't want to speak for others but crap certainly was an unexpected word. I did not come back and disagree with the positive Bilas opinions offered in disagreement with my view. I just assumed those persons felt differently, thought differently or saw different comments.

As I said I love this page.

by CAWebb on Mar 17, 2008 3:01 PM EDT   0 recs

Well ...
your opinions are welcome.

I don't love Bilas, but I do think he is pretty fair overall.  He was just wrong about Kentucky, and from what I see, he still is.

As for Syracuse fans, who can really blame them for thinking they were robbed?  They are fans.  If UK had not made it, we would be saying very much the same thing in reverse.

My opinion is that Kentucky deserved to get in based on their last 12 games, and others didn't for the same reason.  Bilas and others think the last game argument is bogus and shouldn't be considered.  I disagree, and the committee does, too.  And in the end, what the committee thinks is import is what is important, because they get to make the call.  You, me, Bilas and all the Syracuse fans in the country have exactly the same input into the committee's decisions.

Zero.

Pitino
Pitino said during his call in show last night that the Bradley collision near the end of the UGA game should have been a foul.

Not that I like Ricky P all that much anymore but my outrage at the non call is now a little more validated.

Heh ...
as I said, when Pitino was at UK, it was called against us many times.  Many.

Fair is fair.

by Truzenzuzex on Mar 18, 2008 10:16 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Pitino
I don't think Pitino dislikes UK. UK fans, for the most part, don't like him. (I know I'm not revealing some hidden truth to you)

Besides, if one possesses sight, it is obvious a foul was committed. Anyone who states otherwise looks a bit foolish.

So Rick saying a foul was committed is nothing more than him stating the obvious.

But as you note, him even speaking about it makes one feel a bit better about him. Well....maybe not:)

Best part of the KSR West preview (other than the hilarious photo of young Kevin Love humping Kyle Singler) -

"Expect Dave Bliss to show up drunk at a Middlesboro High School Homecoming game sometime this week and try to make out with the Homecoming Queen in honor of our man Lee."

I really can't stand Mr. Bliss. Really. That guy is approaching Laettner status with me.

Horn to USC
Tru,

Looks like our alma mater just became a stepping stone again:

http://feeds.sportsline.com/~r/cbssportsline/cb_news/~3/261399772/rss

by Acdixon on Mar 31, 2008 3:00 PM EDT   0 recs

Yeah ...
I heard that.

Oh well.  It is one heck of a jump from $150K/yr to $750K/yr.

If that is as competitive as Western can be salary-wise, I suppose they should just maintain a long list of promising young assistant coaches.

:-)

by Truzenzuzex on Mar 31, 2008 3:47 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nothings official yet, but...
...it doesn't look good for WKU or Horn.

I certainly thought he would stick around a bit longer, but I suppose I give him too much credit.

This is a lateral move at best, except for the compensation.

Like Willard and Felton before him he had a terrific opportunity to build a great program in BG, but money seems to blind even the most intelligent of us.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 31, 2008 4:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Also...
.....Selig hasn't talked to Horn since Saturday. (as of 11:00 am CDT Monday)--That's not good, and fairly classless.

The 150k is Horn's base, not his total compensation package.

Shows what I know
I wrote on another thread yesterday that no university would be interested in Larry Brown because of his checkered past with the Infractions Committee, but lo and behold Providence contacted him about their opening.

Why would Travis Ford leave UMass for Providence? Building a consistent winner at UMass is much easier than going to a bottom 4 Big East school. Of course, building a power at Providence carries with it a huge payoff as evidenced by our friend Mr. Pitino. But at the same time it seems I remember one John Calipari building a pretty good reputation at UMass. Speaking of Calipari, I read yesterday, somewhere, that Calipari may have an interest in coaching the Knicks. He is good friends with newly appointed GM Donnie Walsh. Talk about your yardstick for intelligence.

I was surprised that Ford took his name out of the running for the LSU job. He must have a very good reason, but I sure don't know what it could be.

The coaching carousel is certainly fun to monitor. As long as Clyde isn't involved.

would be a good hire for the tigers.

Bennet Jr. must really love Wash St., that's two  better (higher profile) jobs he has said no thanks to in indiana and lsu to remain in the pacific northwest.

by wldcatsfreak on Apr 9, 2008 4:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's a lumber jack at heart...
....I'm sure WSU sweetened the pot for him, but it's still refreshing to see a coach remain loyal to the school that gave him his big opportunity. (Is that a Beach Boys song?)

As long as he stays away from the southeast, and continues to give UCLA a run for their money, he's okay in my book....plus he's a great singer.

Top Active Coaches
Interesting list.

Roy Williams as the "Top Active Coach" is laughable. He can certainly recruit, which is a part of coaching, but his game coaching isn't the greatest in the world, in my opinion. With the talent he has accumulated, especially at KU, he should hve more FF's and National Titles.

Although, I do appreciate the Kansas choke job in '98 which opened the door for UK to win #7.

My opinion:

Tubby is too low, Rick is about right....15 years ago, Dixon is too low, Few too low, Gillispie too low, Donovan too high. Olson too high.

Where's Stallings? Stansbury is awfully good. Mike Andersen at Missouri is a very good coach(formerly of UAB), no Tony Bennett?

One could debate the list, and who should be on or off, and their placement, for days.

Thanks for the link.

by Ken Howlett on Apr 10, 2008 3:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd Put K Ahead Of Roy
But both are Top 5 for sure.

Few and Gillsipie have to win NCAA games to move up. Both have so-so NCAA tourney numbers so far.

Olson definitely slipping as he nears retirement. Pitino somewhat but not like Lute has (slipped).

Tubby in 10 to 15 range is about right. He's #12 among active coaches in W-L (%) record and #11 in W-L (%) record in NCAA tourney games.
