The SEC Tournament and Beyond

So what lies ahead for the Wildcats this weekend?  We don't know, but we do know that the SEC tournament starts today in Atlanta, and that the Wildcats are not playing in the first round.  That fact in itself is a surprise, because most everyone who may be reading this, including the author, would never have believed it if someone actually suggested in January that Kentucky would be playing the only team with zero wins in the history of the SEC tournament -- that troubled team called "Bye".

But somehow, the Wildcats found a way to claw, slash, grind and battle their way to a second place finish in the East, and as improbable as that sounds, to serious consideration for an at-large bid in the SEC tournament from the depths of a 6-7 non-conference season.  Depending on who you believe, the Wildcats are either a lock for the NCAA tournament and are fighting for improved seeding, or they are "on the bubble" and need further wins in the SEC tournament to be considered safe.

We have already looked at the odds of winning in each round.  Now let's take a look at the tournament bracket:

From here, you can click on the links to listen to the games or check the live stats.  Kentucky doesn't play until late tomorrow night against the winner of Ole Miss and Georgia.  Whoever it is, I will be doing an abbreviated run-down on them after we know the outcome of their matchup.

If we manage to win our first game, our next opponent would be Alabama, Florida, or Mississippi State.  If we are able to get to that semifinal game, it is simply pregnant with subplots no matter which team we face.  If it is Alabama, we will be facing them for the first time with Richard Hendrix, and without Patrick Patterson which is fairly significant.  If it's Florida, it will be the rubber match between the two teams, and the Gators will be fighting for their NCAA lives.  If it is MSU, we will be facing them for the first time without Patterson.

Kentucky is hardly a favorite to get to the finals, but this team has defied the odds since January 12th when they dispatched Vanderbilt at Rupp Arena.  My feeling is that after the trial by fire that they have been through, these Cats are going to be brutally tough to beat from now on.  It seems to me that every team they have played in the last seven games has suffered from determination disadvantage, and particularly since Patterson went down with injury.  That injury seems to have galvanized this team into playing better and better, and even though the Cats have shown a disturbing tendency to let leads get away from them, they always seem to have enough to pull out the win.  We will see how a neutral court in a dome setting affects their play.  Obviously, it shouldn't matter to the two seniors, who have been here before.  But the younger players may find it a distraction.

Even if the Wildcats do not get past round one, it is my belief they are headed to the NCAA tournament as long as they aren't embarrassed, and my next comments are predicated on that being true.  In terms of seeding, I am hoping that we receive a 10 or 11 seed, rather than an 8 or 9.  That would give us a chance to go deeper before we meet a top 2 seed in the bracket.  I think some of the 3 seeds will be especially vulnerable in this year's tournament.  It seems to me that after the top 10 teams, there is a fairly dramatic fall-off, unlike some other years.  To me, this year's NCAA field looks to be one of the top-heaviest in a long while.

But before we worry too much about seeding, UK needs this first game to remove any remaining doubt (even from the stubborn Jay Bilas) about their place in the field.  That means beating either Ole Miss or Georgia on a neutral floor, and Kentucky has not yet proven that they are able to establish enough of a margin to make an upset unlikely, so be sure to take your nitroglycerin before the game if you have a heart condition.

think positive
Come on, Tru, think positively. Don't write about "if we manage to win," ...say, "when we win".
This team has been unbelievable since January, and we might as well all keep on believing in their unbelievability!

How high?
For sake of argument, let's say UK ends up winning the SEC tourney, beating along the way Ole Miss, MSU, and Tennessee.  That puts us at 21-11, 15-4 in the SEC.  Where would that put us as a seed?  Probably as high as a 5, I would think.  Put another way - is the SEC tourney winner with a 12-4 conference regular season record (ie, not a fluke champ) a top 20 team?  I say so.

Thoughts?

5 or 6 ...
I would say.  We would likely have to beat at least one top 25 team to get there, possibly even a top ten.

Preparing for tourney
The summer before last, I opened up my own office.  When doing the build out on the office space, I had one coaxial cable jack put in the entire place.  Its in the waiting room where I can justify it by saying I could run patient education videos from the technology closet in the other room.  In reality... I put it there so I could call up the cable company in March and get the games if I felt the need.

Last March would have been my first chance to do that... I really didn't see the need.  On Monday, when I see what time UK plays... I just might have to call the cable company and get them out here for an emergency hook up!

Bilas=Emmy ??
Apparently Jay Bilas is nominated for an Emmy for his in-studio analysis....

they keep mentioning it during the Nova Georgetown game, Bilas is announcing.....

Bilas
So the general consensus is that before this year he didn't bash Kentucky overly much...

And that this year he has started hating on the Cats...

So basically, what you're saying is that to be nominated for a sports emmy all you have to do is bash Kentucky??????  ;-)

Bilas' Dookie colors starting to show
I actually used to like him because I really thought he was objective (and had some great insights), and I still think he used to be.  His comments lately toward UK seem more like he has reverted to the good ol' (take a) duke days.

WTH is going on with Florida???????
I'm stuck away from a TV and I can only see the updates on ESPN.com.  Alabama seriously has them doubled up at the half?????????

Looks like my boy Gottfried has said he will not go quietly into that good night!!!

What a wonderful day; UL chokes...Big Time, and Florida (the school PPat should have attended) goes down...hard!

Indeed
That sound you just heard coming from the South was the sound of both the remaining Gator basketball fans of the season looking up the status of Tim Tebow for next year.

Billy did a poor job this year...
...  that would be Billy D., not Billy G.  UF played worse as the season progressed and their offense seemed more disorganized as each game passed.  I truly believe Billy D. caught lightning in a bottle and UF is headed to basketball irrelevance very soon.  The worse coachign job in the SEC by far.

by BeatUL on Mar 13, 2008 11:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree
his first ncaa championship was some lucky coaching and the second was him being lucky that everyone decided to come back...... it will never happen again, mark my words.  At best BillyD will make a couple final 4s the rest of his career - probably none though because he will still jump to the NBA ASAP, he knows his stalk is already dropping.  He just made an emotional decision to come back a coach Florida, maybe he got caught thinking he is as special as the 5 players who left him last year were ......(as much as I hate the Gators, they were a helluva good group of players that fit well together personality wise and it showed on the court).

by cdnWildcatfan on Mar 13, 2008 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I won't go that far..
I don't think it was lucky coaching.  He had an athletic team that could run.  He sent to big guys to crash the boards, flared two to the wings and one down the court to create a dynamic tansition offense that rolled teams.  Smart coaching.

Billy D. is a good coach and jard to argue at this point that he is not a great coach.  Tubby could not take a single team he put together to a final four and Billy D. has taken three.  However, time will tell and my opinion is that it was more about 5 players forming a special team than a great coach.

by BeatUL on Mar 14, 2008 6:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

fair enough,
I wasn't trying to say he didnt do a good job of coaching, indeed he did implement the great offense and a pretty good defense - Im was say more that the fact that he picked the perfect systems for the perfect players was probably a one off.  Think about the coaching he did this year, or the lack of success (relatively) that he had with Walsh and Roberson and that Fla team.

The consensus here (whether or not someone likes Tubby) was that he wasn't taking our program to another champioship anytime soon.  The impression is that he found the perfect mix, just once, of his coaching styles and the right players (players he didnt recruit).  Im suggesting the same thing with BillyD - he did do a fantastic job, it just wont happen again.  Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.

I agree with that..
Billy D. is a blind squirrel.

Tubby?
What does he have to do with Donovan?

Does your hatred of Tubby Smith have to show up every freaking time???

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 14, 2008 8:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't hate Tubby.
The point was, everyone considers Tubby a great coach.  Billy Donovan's career dominates Tubby's and it isn't even close.

Billy D. = 3 Final Fours and 2 Championships.

Tubby = 1 Final Four and 1 Championship with Pitino's stacked team.

You need to relax and realize that my opinion of the poor job he did at UK has nothign to do with the man he is.  As a person, the only thing about him that bothers me is the way he left; but that is just how these wealthy, privileged coaches operate, Tubby is no different in that regard.

by BeatUL on Mar 14, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

16-10
Tubby won 16 of 26 games vs Donovan from 1996 to 2007 so he appears to be the better coach, straight up.

by FortyYearCatFan on Mar 14, 2008 8:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

From 1996 to 2007
Donovan took HIS teams to three Final Fours and won two championships.

Tubby took Pitino's team and won one championship, never to return to the Final Four.

Donovan's career domonates Tubby's.  No question about it.  Do I think Donovan is a better coach?  No way.  Just goes to show how vital recruiting is.

by BeatUL on Mar 14, 2008 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Donovan Is A Quality Coach
So is Tubby.

Tubby > Donovan head-2-head. 16 W to 10 L.

Tubby won 5 SEC titles and 5 SECT championships. Donovan 3 of each (I think).

Donovan 22-7 in NCAA games. Tubby 23-9. (Last 10 years) Edge to Donovan.

All-time, edge to Tubby.

And
did anyone see the article on ESPN about BillyD - how he is lamenting about how he isn't excited about next year's team and that he doesn't think there will be much change in the players attitude or abilities -
Billy G would never say something like that - even at the depths of this year's season, he sure never said something along the lines of 'what can you expect, it had been bad and it will be bad for the rest of the year'.  No, he preached effort and a will to win, always giving the players his support with at least comments such as 'we are improving every day in practice'
I have been coached hockey before (middle school aged kids) and half of the battle is motivating players to go beyond their comfort level and to exert effort in situations in which a teammate will likely get credit for the results.
GillyG is great at this.  BillyD sucks at this in my opinion, and it was Noah, Horford, and Brewer that brought this winning attitude to the team - and unless BD gets lucky enough to recruit such a rare breed of players again, his teams will always resemble more of the teams we saw this year and 5 years ago - good, but always short of great

Donovan discussion...

Billy D
I read a couple of other posts and two more articles about the interviews he gave. Donovan certainly let some here-to-fore non-public character show in his post game comments. He has always come across as too tightly wound, from his behaviors to his RP hair style. (Sorry..I can be petty about someone I don't support).  He will be very interesting if FLA does go to the NIT and then implodes early...and they certainly might be an early out. But back to the comments, hope folks especially recruits remember this. Back to petty, I enjoyed the shots of Jai Lucas's dad as the first half proceeded. He seemed unhappy.
