The Lofton Debate Four Years Later

For the last 3+ years, I have had to watch a certain segment of Kentucky fans, and many TV announcers, argue that Tubby Smith and UK made a mistake by not offering Chris Lofton a scholarship.  Joe Crawford, Ramel Bradley and Patrick Sparks were evidently listening, too, and it hurt them -- apparently more than we will ever know:

Sunday marks the last regular-season game against Kentucky for Lofton. For UK guards Joe Crawford and Ramel Bradley, it serves as one last annoying reminder of the implied fan wish: that Smith had bypassed them when Lofton was available.

"It hurt a lot," Crawford said of the longing for Lofton. "I'm human. I thought I was a better player than him, and things like that. So it definitely hurt. I felt I was deserving of a scholarship."
As fans, we are all aware that comments like "we should have recruited Lofton over (Fill in the blank)" get out there.  Excuses like "players shouldn't be reading message boards" and "I have a right to my opinion" may be true in the abstract, but when it's water under the bridge, do these laments make any sense?  With that said, I have seen a serious lack of such comments for the last two months, and I am sure that all the guys who were disrespected by the Lofton angst have noticed, but I doubt they will forgive it, nor should they.  As Kentucky fans, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard than that, but unfortunately, too many don't.  Now, at the end of their career, I think the numbers of "I'd rather have Lofton" whiners have dwindled into happy insignificance.

Chris Lofton is an all-American, a great college player who happens to be playing in a system that gets the absolute most out of his incredible shooting talent.  But given our needs and scholarship situation at the time, there is no doubt that Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford were the logical choices, and virtually any coach in America in Smith's shoes would have done the same thing under identical circumstances.  Lofton, to his credit, gave us all a reason to regret not recruiting him, but that happened way, way after the fact.  Nobody recruits a 3-star Kentucky Mr. Basketball over a McDonald's All-American.  It isn't done, and never will be.  I absolutely guarantee, with all the authority such meaningless and unknowable speculation holds, that Gillispie would have done the same thing had he been the coach at Kentucky instead of Smith.

I am proud to have been firmly on the side of decisions we made back in 2004, with never a moment of angst.  Joe and Ramel took a long time to reach their peak, but late is better than never, and right now I wouldn't trade either one of those young men for two Chris Loftons and a player to be named later.  Ramel and Joe have lead the charge of the Wildcats as Kentucky has bounced back from a dismal pre-conference schedule to contend for an SEC championship, a feat nobody, and I mean nobody would have predicted three months ago.

Now, Crawford and Bradley have a chance to do the even more improbable -- send Lofton and his talented teammates back to second place in the East.  To do that, though, they will have to do the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest without oxygen, and beat the angry Vols at home.  Last time we tried to do that to an SEC team, the Cats got embarrassed by 41 points in Nashville.  This time, I think they will appreciate the magnitude of what they are about to attempt, and come correctly into Thompson-Boling on Sunday.

It isn't likely, but I think that given the history of the debate about Lofton and Kentucky's two seniors, it is worth speculating how sweet it would be if they managed to defeat the Vols at home.  They say that revenge is a dish best served cold, and sweeping Tennessee would be pure icy-cold sweetness over those who had wished Lofton at Kentucky and either Bradley or Crawford elsewhere.  If the Cats are then able to pull off the hat trick by winning the remaining two games, it would be thunderous revenge against all this teams' detractors, and place the SEC on notice that the window of opportunity for supplanting Kentucky at the top of the league has been closed, barred, shuttered and padlocked.

Lofton
I'm proud of what Lofton has accomplished at Tennessee.  However, in no way have I ever wished he was playing all his home games at Rupp.  Lets be honest; we had our Brandon Stocktons, our Josh Carriers, etc over the years preceeding Lofton's recruitment.  Does anyone think it would have been in Lofton's best interest to play for Tubby Smith for three years?  Anyone here think (even for just a second) that Lofton would be the all-time SEC leader in 3 pointers wearing a UK jersey?  The kid never would have seen the floor until his junior or senior year due to a perception (rightly so in my opinion) that he was too slow to play defense in Tubby's system.

The Tubby argument doesn't need to be rehashed in any way shape or form, but when Tubby's system worked... it was a thing of beauty; but don't kid yourself into thinking that Lofton ever could have fit in that system.

Ditto to Billy Gillispie.  For a coach who stresses taking smart shots, many of Lofton's prayers do not qualify.  Yes he hits many of them... but he also takes a lot of bad shots that miss.

For Chris Lofton, the opportunity to play under Bruce Pearl for three years has been a godsend.  If he gets a chance to play in the League at all, it will be because he was given the chance to run and shoot with abandon and put up gaudy numbers.  If he had played at Kentucky, best case scenario he would have been a role-player and the career opportunities post-college would cap out at Commisioner of Agriculture.  ;-)

Thanks chirpo1
You said exactly what I was thinking.  I couldn't agree more.

C Loft
His situation now reminds me of Tim Couch. The system makes great use of their (yes I am about to say this) limited skills. The limited skills they both have are GREAT but the next level will be very unkind to Lofton too.

I never felt he had a place in Tubby's system and given the choice of Bradley, Rondo, Sparks and Crawford while just watching two other Mr. B-Balls ride the pine. Not even close.

I have had my hometown heart broken too. I saw Prince Stewart from my Lafayette in Lex. distroy Sean Sutton 4 times straight and then saw him have a nice time at UTEP while we got, well, Sean Sutton. This time, we got Rondo, Bradley, Crawford and Sparks.

Glad to see the Kentucky Boy do well but still no regrets.

Fingers Crossed
I  just hope that we don't get reffed out of a chance to compete in this game.  Both teams are going to be keyed up...its an important game for both sides.  I think its going to be an exciting game to watch, assuming it doesn't become a whistle fest.

by sylvar on Feb 29, 2008 10:42 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Food for thought
UT tends to do best when the refs let the kids play.  They rely on keeping the pace up and wearing the other team down, and the whistle-fest gives lots of rest time.

On the other hand, UT is also very good at racking up lots of fouls and not having anybody foul out.  So, if the game is foul-happy and UK can keep their key players from getting in deep foul trouble, it could be a close one.

by hooper on Feb 29, 2008 11:18 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Clarification
I was referring to whistle fest of the one-sided variety...The kind that seems to be par for the course at an SEC road game.  And I mean that in an all incompassing way not in a "The refs hate UK" way.
You do make a good point about Tenn. wanting  that faster pace.   I hadn't really thought about it like that.....So, the fouls are ok as long as no one fouls out! :)

by sylvar on Feb 29, 2008 12:10 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Gotcha.
The one-sided whistle is always a concern with SEC refs, it seems.  I hope that the officiating is clean and level so that the winner gets it cleanly.  As far as officiating crews go, I just hope it's not T. Valentine.  He's done several UT games already, so he may have already maxed out his eligibility for the year.  At least I really, really hope so.

And as far as high fouls - UT averages something over 20 a game.  They fouls a lot because they gamble a lot for steals and pressure.  Lotsa fouls aren't necessarily a bad thing; in UT's case, it usually means they're trying hard.  I don't know how that works for UK, though.

Kind of torn about Sunday
Being from Maysville, I wanted to see Chris play for UK, I think most people in town did, except maybe the few weirdos that like Louisville. I've got to admit it has been the strangest thing to see UT gear for sale in the local shops. I'm still amazed a UT basketball coach has a key to our city. But I think pretty much everyone from Mason County would agree. Royals first, Wildcats a very very close second.

I'm not ashamed to say I've rooted for Tennessee against UK several times since Chris got there. Usually when the games were played in Rupp. I honestly haven't decided who I'm going to root for on Sunday. I got over a lot of my angst at the situation when Tubby left. It's not really about the principal of the thing anymore, I just want to see Chris go out with a win against the school that passed him over. Hard to say at this point. I'll probably be happy no matter who wins as long as Chris plays a good game.

Its much the same with the way I follow Wildcats in the NBA, Tayshaun is my favorite player, and I root for the Pistons. I followRondo, Bogans and Azubuike, and I love watching Chuck Hayes play. I will always root for the team that has the wildcat. When Chris makes it to the NBA he'll be my favorite player, and I'll root for his team. I guess it goes like I said earlier. Royals first, wildcats a very very close second.

Balancing loyalties
I would think the ideal solution to your problem would be to see Lofton have a great personal game in a team loss.

Cats win by 2... Lofton scores 30.  That sort of thing.

High School
Im from here and Lex and graduated from LHS too.
I cant say I have ever rooted for a HS alum over my CATS. I just dot get it.

I like CL but dont think he would have had the same carreer at UK that he has had at UT and dont think he is going to make it to the NBA. He just isnt physically gifted enough to make it in the league. I think he could probably make some serious money in the Euroleagues though.

I agree
I went to high school with Jaron Brown - who ended up at Pitt - and Erik Brown - who ended up at Louisville but that never made me don those school colors. (RED??? GASP!)While Jaron was almost a Wildcat, Erik Brown never even got a look from UK, but went on to Morehead State first to become the leading scoring freshman and on to be coached by the great Rick Pitino. Anyway, I know that is a VERY different situation from CL, but my point is that some players just arent meant to be Wildcats and their lives/careers take different directions.

Lofton in the NBA
I dunno... if guys like John Paxson and Steve Kerr can make a career by being the "designated 3 point shooter," I would think Lofton could find a niche role.  Will he ever be a superstar?  No, I don't think so.  But get him on the right team where he can just get in there as the 4th option or the long range guy as the shot clock expires and I think he could work out.

by chirop1 on Feb 29, 2008 12:05 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Big difference...
Between Kerr & Paxson and Lofton is Shot Selection.

true
but he won't get the constant green light to shoot he has under pearl at UT. since we're picking former bulls to compare him to, i'd like to offer up BJ Armstrong and Jud Buechler (one of my faves).

Paxson
Im not questioning his ability to add offensivley but his inability to guard someone. I dont know how Paxson stacks up physically with CL so I would have to figure that one out first.

NBA points and shooting guards are typically much bigger and quicker than CL plays on a regular basis. I know the kid has heart but I just dont think he is athletically gifted enough.

If Loton makes it to the NBA...
he better watch a lot of film on Reggie Miller.  Miller wasn't overly athletic, or by any means a great defender.  He was however one of the best I have ever seen at moving w/o the ball and getting in position to take an open shot.  If and it may be a big if, Lofton learns to duplicate that style of play, he could find a spot on a NBA roster and be very sucessful.

by wldcatsfreak on Feb 29, 2008 7:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Apples & Oranges..
Reggie Miller is 6'7" and made it much easier for him to get his shot off in the NBA.  Lofton, is not an NBA player.  Frankly, I am sick of Lofton and Joe Carter is a better all around player.

Everyone wanted Joe C.
EVERYONE!

All the hindsight is "should of" "could of" "would of" bantar that is meanignless.  Lofton may have come to UK and bee a total flop.

I am curious, how do the stats show Lofton vs Joe c.?

Acdixon's diary post-game comment about PPat
The promoted diary from the other day struck a note with me when I read this story.  When talking about the post-game interview, he said "Patrick Patterson was extremely friendly and patient, coming out after Coach G and signing something for every single person who was waiting for him. He also took pictures with many of them, despite the fact that his foot (or perhaps ankle) was hurting so badly that he wasn't wearing one shoe and was walking with a noticeable limp."

I guess we know why now...

Lofton
As a HS junior, he longed for Louisville. Pitino offered. Lofton wouldn't commit. Pitino gave his scholarship to someone else.

As a HS senior, he begged the UC (Cincy) staff to offer him a scholarship. They didn't. He verballed to Tennessee. Then UC offered (finally) and he nearly reneged on UT.

UK gave scholarships to 4 new guards in 2004-05. Crawford, Rondo, Bradley, and Sparks (who WALKED ON as a transfer).

Each of those 4 was higher rated than Lofton.

And UK Has Won 6 Of 8 Versus UT / Lofton
UK has 6 W (only 2 L) versus Tennessee and Lofton.
