Ole Miss almost stuffs Kentucky's Yin up their Yang
I have come to the conclusion that the Kentucky Wildcats do not play well with a lead of any significant size [Ya think? -ed.]. Great Zot, what a freaking way to win a game.
The Cats got a good, long look at the abyss on a three point shot that would have likely won the game for the Rebels after having come back from a 19-point deficit at the half. That shot seemed to take forever, and looked good all the way. Fortunately, it was just a little long, and Kentucky survives the Ole Miss Rebels in a game that can be best described as a tale of two halves.
Kudos to the Rebels for an amazing comeback. The second half, Ole Miss dominated nearly as completely as Kentucky dominated the first. It was another heart-pounding, skinny-margin victory for Kentucky when it looked like it might wind up a laugher. Ole Miss just pounded the Cats on the glass, and Chris Warren was virtually unguardable as he hit three 3-pointers from 25 feet or more. Not only that, Warren was simply too quick by orders of magnitude for any of Kentucky's players, and he often blew by Wildcat defenders like a Maserati blows by a Yugo.
But at the end of the day, the Wildcats got it done. There is no place in the won-lost column for detailed descriptions, and after the final buzzer sounded, UK came out with their 10th SEC victory against only 3 losses. One more victory will make the Wildcats very tough to overlook for the NCAA tournament, and two more should be enough to make an invitation highly likely. As close as it turned out to be, the Cats did just enough, as they have done so many times before. Amazingly enough, 20 victories is now within reach, and I don't think anybody would have believed it possible in early January.
Patrick Patterson was dominated for one of the very few times this season, and he played very much like a freshman. I don't blame him, that does happen and he has played above his years all season long. Frankly, the Cats were outplayed completely the entire second half, but dominated the first half enough to hang on. There are lots of mistakes to criticize, but let's face it -- we should just be glad to be here given what we faced coming into the SEC season. Sometimes, criticism doesn't make much sense, and this seems to be one of those times. A victory by 1 point or 20 looks the same in the record books.
It's amazing how this team seems to play better when the game gets close, so I suppose that we can look forward to more close games to come. I'm glad I have recently joined a gym and begun a workout program, because it looks like my heart will need the support if the Wildcats do make it into the post season. You would think I would be used to it by now, but to be honest, I don't think I am. Narrow escapes seem to be the only type of games these Cats are comfortable playing, and although it is exciting, it is more exciting than I like my basketball to be.
Next comes the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville. They are likely to be as mad as killer bees over their loss at Vandy, and that is never a good thing. But these Wildcats are very much like young trees -- they bend almost double, but refuse to break. These Cats do not go away, and even when they get rattled, they are still able to get the job done. Having two senior guards really helps with that.

Rebels, Vols, and huge upsets.
Surprisingly to me, Clyde wasn't too upset after the game. He wasn't happy, but he wasn't seething either.
The effort just wasn't there after the half. But on the positive side, at least the younger players can learn something from a game like that; don't ever quit competing, or you'll get your arse beat (or in this case, nearly beat).
I really think Sunday could be unpleasant. I would much rather UT lost to Memphis, and beat Vandy. Coming off of a loss, at home...the boys in blue will be seeing orange rage with a live eye. Plus the fact that UK has already beat them. Revenge and redemption will be on Tennessee's mind.
Not that I think UK has no chance. They do, but it will take their absolute best effort of the season. And, they'll have to be 8 to 10 points better. Slowing them waaaaaaay down, is Kentucky's only chance, I feel.
A couple of years ago UK went into Knoxville heavy underdogs, and came away with a great win. The crowd was nuts, but the guys kept their cool, weathered the storm, and won it in the final minute. That win was universally unexpected within the BBN, as a win Sunday would be.
Gillispie said tonight that he is "playing for a championship". I believe him, but can he elevate the play to a level worthy of a championship?
If there is a lesson that I have learned over the last 4 months, it is to not doubt Clyde, and what Clyde is capable of.

RPI up in a road loss
One thing that I think is important to realize with any ranking system (and that includes the NCAA tourney selection) is that we don't exist in a vacuum. Everything is relative to what other teams are doing. For example, we could start next year unranked and go undefeated for the first 14 games... But lets say there are 15 other teams that are undefeated too; the best we could probably do in that situation is reaching number 16. Its the same way with the RPI. If the other teams in front of us are doing good stuff that day too, they'll stay put and so will we.

Fortunately
UK wins out, not only do they win the SEC, they lock in a 8-10 seed and a top 25 ranking.
It just seems to me the national media wants UK to fail... they do not want UK in the tourney. To me it is obvious that is what is going on; UK has won 9 of 10, second in the SEC, already has 10 conference wins, has beaten Vandy and Tenn (two top 10 teams; well, Vandy will be next week most likely). No way Uk should be on the bubble, they should be a concensus tourney team that would have to work their way out fo the tourney.
UK may not advance in the tournament, but I sure hope UK makes it, wins a game or two and we can tell the entire basketball nation to kiss our blue asses.

Media
Making predictions like NO CHANCE three months before tournament time is faulty logic, especially when dealing with a team like UK, no matter how poorly they're playing at the time. I hope the national media hits tournament time with their big feet stuck in their mouths.

I disagree
I couldn't disagree more. We are definitely NOT in as of today. If we lose the last three games of the season and lose the first game we play in the SEC tournament, we're not in. Teams that are "locks" like Tennessee could end on a four game skid like that and still get in. We cannot.
To get into the tournament, we have to do what we said we needed to do back in January when we were 2-2. Go 11-5 (or better) and win 2 tourney games. Anything less is NIT bound. Many Cat fans are saying we're in based on the assumption that we'll win at USC and home against Florida. Not a safe assumption at this point.
We definitely belong in the "Still have work to do" column.

I absolutely disagree...

But they don't choose today...
In terms of bubble teams and locks, we don't talk about where we are today. We talk about where we need to be when the bids go out. In my opinion.

Houston
Robert McKiver had 52 POINTS last night. Also, look at the CUSA standings - not that strong of a conference, but Houston and UAB are the clear 2 and 3 spots in the conference, respectively. They aren't exactly crap-teams, and we're still catching heat for losing to them.

Proof
All they have done is stop counting them in statements and only say G-Web, San D, and the thump at vandy.
If we were an ACC school it would be "Yes they have losses but loosing to UAB and Huston are not bad losses."
ESPN is to the ACC as Fox is to the GOP and MSNBC is to the Democratic Party. The only issue is there are not 10 other outlets to watch.

Jimmy Dykes and Partner
They were spouting positives left and right about Kentucky.
ESPN's RPI" formula is a bit different than realtimerpi.com. UK was 61st late last night at realtime, but ESPN had them at 66th.
Let's hope the actual formula is closer to realtime, than ESPN.

Something to think about...
I wonder if last nights performance in the second half was due to fatigue. These guys have played a lot of minutes, and at some point, I don't think it's out of line, to think they may hit a wall. I certainly hope this isn't the case, but it's something to keep an eye on.

LOL
I had forgotten about seeing the guys grabbing shorts Saturday, until well after the game last night. In trying to figure out what the hell happened in the second half, it popped into my mind, and I thought "uh oh".
Hopefully it's nothing. We'll find out soon enough.

opinions
I recognize my Bilas attitude but the mouths out there all have their agenda...often worse than we do as fans. Phelps reminded him in the first discussion that Kentucky is always Kentucky....sort of like the famous McGuire comment and can not be out of contention for the NCAA until the time is up and the numbers are all in. I think at least two more wins and into Saturday in Atlanta and we are in. Maybe less...but I do think they have an excellent chance.
We can even dream about being in a game on Sunday in Atlanta...why not the way they are playing?

Bilas
I wonder if it could have anything to do with the Tubby situation?
by Ken Howlett on Feb 28, 2008 5:46 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Bilas
I have always thought of Bilas as one of the most rational Dukies around but I just dont get whats with hiim this season. It should be apparent to everyone that Kentucky is still Kentucky and even with a sub par record should make the Dance when many other teams dont simply because the amount of money we bring to the tourney.
