Kentucky at Georgia -- Open Game Thread

This is the official Open Game Thread for Kentucky at Georgia.

Playing the Bulldogs in Athens is never easy, especially since Dennis Felton took over the coaching duties.  The Dawgs play the most physical defense in the league, and arguably in the entire NCAA.  That defense keeps them in every single game, and drives opposing coaches and players crazy.

Georgia will fight very hard to prevent the Wildcat players from catching the ball where they want it.  That means the guards are going to have to work very, very hard to get the ball to Patterson in the low post.  It also means that drives into the lane are going to be difficult.  Kentucky must be patient on offense but they can't run down the shot clock and wait to go on offense like they did against Kentucky, or they will never get a good look against the Dawgs.

I always fear that a team in a shooting slump will pick Kentucky as the opponent to break out of it, and I have that same fear today.  This game will definitely require Kentucky's best, and anyone who walks into Stegeman Coliseum without respecting the toughness of the Georgia team will surely regret it.

The good news is that Kentucky has been playing much better of late, and I see no reason to believe that this trend is ready to reverse itself.  Gillispie continues to laud the young Wildcat's progress in practice, and we have seen some notable improvement from Ramel Bradley, Joe Crawford and Perry Stevenson.  If this continues, Kentucky is in a good position to get its first road win of the year, a win it badly needs.

Keys to the game:
  1. Ballhandling -- This stat is improving.  Regression would be deadly.
  2. Defensive intesity -- The Dawgs will bring it.  Can the Wildcats also?
  3. Get into the lane -- Great foul shooting is only an advantage if you get fouled.
  4. Toughness --  The toughest team should win this game.
  5. Patterson -- Georgia will work hard to deny him the ball in scoring position.  We must find a way to do it anyway.
A three-game winning streak seems like such a dream right now, but it can come true if the Cats leave it all out there on the Stegeman floor today.  I will not be liveblogging this game, so please comment below.

GO, CATS!

Looks like the local CBS channel has decided to show UVA v VT rather than the cats. Man I hate the ACC...

Guess I'm listening on the radio.

First to 60 wins?
Looks like the goal of another ugly game is going to happen.

Tipton
Jerry Tipton should be calling Boudreaux right now and ask for an explanation as to why an intentional wasn't called.

I don't really expect him to do it, but he should.

Did I hear
that right? No turnovers in the first half for the Cats.

by String Music on Feb 2, 2008 1:55 PM EST reply actions

They have at least 2-3 turnovers.
If you got that from CBS, they also showed a graph that said UK was shooting 36%. At the time UK was 9-21 from the field, which is NOT 36%

I think is the number.  Maybe this will be good in learning to play if we have to without Bradley, but I sure hope he can go 20 min in the 2nd.  This is may be a must-win as far as post-season is concerned.

And
what is up with all the booing today? Georgia fans are booing everything.

Prof Plum in the ballroom with the candlestick
UK looks like the better team, but the score remained close throughout.  Crawford came out shooting well.  Patterson being normal, but missed a few down low.  Bradley fouled hard on a breakaway, no intentional foul, but was stitched up and did not return.

Assist to TO was around 7:2  and the rebounding margin seemed to be good.  Solid D by both teams.  If UK shotts a higher %, they should be able to pull away, especially if Ramel can play.

by GoLightning on Feb 2, 2008 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Crawford was the story...
..in the 1st half. He had 13.

Ugly game as expected. Bradley did a face plant onto the floor after a hard foul on a drive.

UK's playing pretty good... just heard Bradley will NOT play in the 2nd. Possible concussion.

Patterson missed a few gimmes down low, but he is overall playing pretty well. They've worked the high low a few times.

Gotta go...

Bradley
Should we be worried about Ramel having a concussion - didnt he have a few back in his freshman and sophomore years?  He looked pretty woozy on the way back to the bench.

Well,
we saw that we could win without Crawford last week....this week we see what we have without Bradley on the road

Lousy call, yeah
Bad call.  What's with the sideline boards?  UGA's running really distracting, strobe-light-like effects whenever the 'Cats have it.

Man...
Bliss climbed up Crawford's back for that RB.  Shouldn't that have been called?  Sometimes it makes no sense to me, what is called and what isn't.

Coming down to the wire
I'm impressed.  Crawford's walking wounded and is heading for a 30 point game, Bradley's out with a concussion and the rest of the team has picked up the slack.  This one is headed down to the wire but win or lose I think the Cats showed a hell of a lot of grit in this one.

Gutsy gutsy effort.
NO TURNOVERS the rest of the way.

Must crash the defensive boards.

Yep, the question is free throws
After that monster alley-oop jam the Cats are up 5 with less than a minute to go.  Howlett asked the question of the hour: can they make the FTs without Ramel?

Gutsy, gutsy win.
They played smart basketball and were a determined group today.

Crawford with 26 on one leg. I'd say that's pretty good.

Big props to Joe
That was a gutty effort and he really stepped up when the team needed him.

GREAT WIN
The cats get their first road win of the year without Meeks or Bradley and Crawford hobbling around.

Patterson and Crawford were amazing and the role players stepped up enough to help us scratch and claw our way to another hard fought victory.

good win
What effort....throughout. Some letdown on rebounds and FT...and that was Bradley out. Hope he is OK. Crawford showed his grit. What a game. All on the floor stepped up. I was so bothered with the flashing table lights when KY had the ball....bad form for GA. That should be against rules.

I liked the picture of Bradley and BCG when Bradley was coming off floor....good vibes in that image.

Good win. Great road win.

What's in Crawford's chest?
Anybody want to question Crawfords heart and determination? Not I.

He and Bradley have acquitted themselves quite well from the charges of earlier in their career. (Selfish, lack of effort, etc.)

Very proud of those guys.

Where is our fearless leader today?

The Big Red One
Watching this team feels like watching a Lee Marvin flick. Guys injured and beat up. One guy dragging another up the hill and damned if he doesn't take a shot.

Sean Sutton...Oh I meant Porter looks like he has mad good use of those games early. Really held his ground. (I am saying he looks like Sean not a comment on ability. Well...)

Big win. HUGE to see it as so many were out or taken out.

Go Cats!

ANd..
...I am starting to just "know" it will be good in the end. That is the biggest change of late.

I also am in line with my plate and fork for the crow. Joe and Brad are showing what the nation thought 4 years ago.

Might be something to the BCG guy?

Nothing sweeter than developing...
... and getting the most out of ones players.

by Ken Howlett on Feb 2, 2008 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

Lee seems to work well this year
Start of the year - Cat Ballou, aptly skilled but too dysfunctional to make use of it. The skill only kept us from getting killed. I almost went with Ship of Fools but you can see why I chose Cat Ballou.

Now - Big red One, hurt and lost ranks but digging deep to hold the hill. We have a mission and by GOD we will make it!

Seeing Bradley hit the floor was certainly a Violent Saturday.

If we can just hit Dirty Dozen by season's end we are in business.

OK OK I am done.

Anyone want to analogize using hit songs of the 70's and 80's?

Great road win.
Team showed intestinal fortitude today.  Losing Ramel, Crawford knocking the lights out on one leg and Patterson putting them on his back late.  Everyone did their part and no one quit.  Props to Billy Clyde.  This team is a "team" despite the injuries and distractions.  And I love them.

i think
if this team can keep playing like this til the end of the season (whenever that may be), they may get a bit of "cult favorite" type status.

after the start they had and the way bradley and crawford (who could have imagined a game like this for him the last two years?) have really stepped up, i am really beginning to enjoy watching them.

as long as they keep playing as hard as they do, i think those two can turn their UK reps around and a lot of people will remember this team.

i know i will.

So, of course, days like this are to be expected. I am looking forward to next year. UK vs. Florida is going to return to EPIC LEVELS.

That's good news.

Another Step In The Process.....
.........another step in the rebuilding process, and yes, this is a rebuilding process to get us back to the elite level we are used to being....great win especially with the injuries........the early part of the season when Porter was playing so much..it paid off today.  He came in and did a fine job.

Great job!  Go Cats!

Proof Positive...
...that comparing scores in an attempt to gauge the quality of a team is futile, at best.

Georgia beats Arkansas, by a lot.
Florida beats UK.
UK beats Georgia.
Arkansas drills Florida.
