South Carolina at Kentucky -- Quick thoughts
What an impressive effort by Devan Downey and the South Carolina Gamecocks. This is a team that has real potential if they can get some bigger people, but today, the Wildcats were just too big and strong for them, despite the fact that Kentucky was missing one of their 3 main scorers and rebounders, Joe Crawford. Props to South Carolina and their entire team for an outstanding effort.
It seems that this Kentucky team has finally found itself, and to pull off this win with Joe Crawford in street clothes was an amazing accomplishment. Neither Jodie Meeks nor Derek Jasper are in sufficient shape to play the iron-man minutes Crawford has been logging, but despite that, they managed to log 38 and 31 minutes respectively.
My thoughts on this game:
- If you can't match up with Patterson, it is tough to beat the Cats. His strength and motor are amazing.
- Perry Stevenson's confidence continues to grow. He needs to be more reliable on the 15 footer, though.
- Kentucky shot 51% from 2, 61% from 3, and 78% from the line and won by 8. How does this happen? USC got up 14 more shots than the Cats.
- When Kentucky keeps it at 15 turnovers or under, it seems that we are always in the game.
- Ramel Bradley is simply amazing right now. That behind-the-back turnover he made on a fast break just shows you how his confidence is spiking. And what a shooting display - 8-13 from the floor, 5-5 from 3 for 26 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 turnovers. I wonder if USC left their earrings in ...
- Perry Stevenson helps out Patterson so much in so many tiny ways.
- Jodie Meeks is still not 100%, but he gave whatever he had today. Great effort.
- Jasper's three-point shooting is frightening. If he could only take more. What an improvement from last year.
- Ramon Harris only played 11 minutes.
- We continue to outrebound our opponents.
- Great job getting the ball into the post. Gillispie must be pleased with that.
- UK's defense was not all that today. Gillispie can't be pleased about that.
- Rupp Arena is becoming an advantage again.

A happy win
Only 4 turnovers in the second half is terrific.
9-9 overall, 3-2 SEC and UK played well in both losses, on the road, to two solid teams. I'm excited to see (well, listen) to how the team plays the remainder of the way. UK is going to have a lot to say about who wins the SEC this year, something I don't think a lot of us thought would be the case back in December.
On a personal note, UK is now 9-0 when I don't watch them play on TV and 0-9 when I do. I'm not normally a superstitious person, but that's just too strange to ignore.

hmmmm...
Rupp seemed really lively and loud today. Tru's right that it is becoming a real advantage for the team. Gillispie remarked on this after the game too.
It was a fun game to watch. Patterson is simply a beast--he has to be one of the most impressive Kentucky freshmen since...who? It's been a while. Oh lord, please let him come back next year (yes, I know that's something to worry about another day) It is so nice to see Stevenson developing to help him out down there. While I'm not going to get carried away and act like we're all awesome now because we won two games in a row, the team IS really starting to find itself. I don't know if it is going to be enough for us to get to the NCAAs this year. I'm a little dubious about the possibility of an at-large, although us winning the SEC tourney does seem a definate possibility, with tons of our fans there and our postseason lives hanging in the balance. But postseason or no, I DO feel very good about our future with Gillispie, which I'm going to admit I was getting a bit worried about in the dark days of December.

Rondo, probably ...
But when was the last big player we had that was as capable as Patterson?
I'd have to say Mashburn.

Bradley
He shut down Frederick the last 16 minuts of the 2nd, after he was asked to guard the 3 point shooter.
Stevenson continues to impress. He is the key to this team beating good teams, I feel. His defense has been good, but his added scoring punch is what is most needed. That takes the pressure off of Bradley, Crawford, and Patterson. Couple Stevenson's offensive presence with Meeks getting closer to 100%, and Gillispie has the makings of a pretty good offensive basketball team.
Jasper looks to be very close to 100%.
Crawford has a week before the next game. Let's hope his foot is feeling better. Georgia is extrememtly well coached, if shorthanded.
Congrats on a good win.
Who woulda thunk it only 3 weeks ago?
Oh by the way, Patterson is good.

With a rotation of six guys
During that 12-0 run by SoCar at beginning of 2nd half I thought that Frederick was going to be the nail in our coffin.
What I noticed is that the only SoCar player to get to the foul line was Downey (2-3) while we had four guys (18-23). That shows me that they are buying into the idea of going to the basket aggressively (Stevenson the most noticeable lately.) The most obvious benefit of that is shortening the opposing bench so that instead of six on ten it gets closer to six on six with our six CONDITIONED for 37-40 min games. That's what this season calls for and it's nice to see that rounding into shape for coach. Now, if we can keep our guys healthy. Get well Joe!
The reason that SoCar had 14 more shots than UK is because of our 15 turnovers which led to shots on goal. Bradley's behind the back TO was criticized by the Gaycom announcers (yes, even Connoley.) They lamented that he should have taken it to the basket instead of being flashy. I personally think that it was a momentum thing. UK had it going and a little flash off the opposing team's TO isn't so bad. He just put too much on his pass instead of laying it out for Jasper (who isn't at full speed & in the heat of the play Bradley probably forgot about it.) What was inspiring about the play was that Bradley could have gone to the bucket with the ball but thought of his teammate instead. NICE!!! Had it been Crawford trailing he most likely would have gotten it. Either way it wasn't a game changing play even with the three at the other end. I think Bradley answered right back with one of his own.
These guys are obviously coming together. The rotation is getting shorter without serious side effects and looking at the bench you can see smiles of support. I have really been happy with Bradley lately. In SEC play he has really turned his game around. He looks like a team player while at the same time a PTP'er. Knowing how important guard play is in the NCAA's I am beginning to like our chances for a Sweet Sixteen should we get there.
As for next game I think UK will lose by 10 at Georgia. I just don't think we can be physical enough with Felton's crew who are notoriously in your face defensively. Hopefully I'll be wrong and we can pull out a W. Good luck Cats.

Plantar fasciitis still bothering him, I think.
UK will need him in Athens next Saturday.
By the way, the Vandy radio people are split on the game tomorrow. (I live in Kentucky, but I'm only about 55-60 miles north of Nashville.)
One thinks Ogilvey is going to get off tomorrow, the other thinks playing on the road is too much for Vandy to overcome.

Continuing education interrupts ballgame
We took a break for lunch at noon, so I left the hotel (Hilton Garden Inn at the airport) and grabbed a bite with a few guys I know at the Hall of Fame cafe. I start noticing that I'm the only person in Kentucky Blue in the entire place and I actually get a couple of stares. The waitress promised no one would spit in my food though.
We were back in session right at one o'clock (tip time naturally). We ended up taking another "5 minute" break at a little after two. As we wander into the hotel lobby, several of us start gravitating towards the TV where the game is at about the 7 minute mark. More and more people notice and start collecting around the TV. Eventually, the presenter comes out in the lobby and sees 30-40 of the class watching the ballgame. When he sees who's playing he just says "Oh. Okay, we'll start up when they finish." Heh heh.
From what I saw, looks like another gutsy performance from the Cats. Good stuff.

My Cats
-PPat is an absolute beast. If we are lucky enough to have him for 3 yrs, my lord.
-Bradely has finally realized how to play his best game.
-Jasper is good. He is so versatile, I'm curious to see how good he might be by his senior year. And holy cow, does he have an outside shot now, or what?
-Downey is really good.
-It seems to me Meeks is still a step slow.
-Perry is currently a fantastic compliment to PPat.
Overall, it is so nice to enjoy watching when my Cats play again, which is a great contrast from the beginning of the year. My confidence that BCG will acheive great things is growing daily. Solid win.

Feelin' good about the 'Cats
There are several areas of bemoanment (is that a word?) which have been either corrected or coached up. Along with the return of Meeks and Jasper to more substantial roles, this team shows signs of being pretty good.
Some of the issues that were of major concern to many here at ASoB, including me:
Lack of leadership- I am so pleased with Bradley. He has certainly responded to Gillispie's admonitions to him regarding "leaderless possessions". He has risen to the level of his confidence, which has never been lacking.
Lack of help for Patterson in the paint- The most welcome improvement, because it takes the team to another level. The improved play of Stevenson has made a huge difference is how efficiently the offense runs. Having the ability to run the high- low helps to get open looks on the perimenter. And we know these guys are capable of hitting their threes consistently. Stevenson has even stepped up his defense. He's not committing fouls every 45 seconds. That fact alone is a huge improvement. Especially when considering how UK was out-shot from the free throw line by a wide margin every game. Not anymore.
Will UK ever score against a zone again?- After the Houston and UAB games that was the question. UK seemed as if they had never seen a zone before. They looked totally lost, and disorganized. My how times have changed. They are spreading and attacking the zone, getting penetration, and just generally creating all kinds of problems for the opponents.
Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, my gawd the turnovers!- Not a drastic improvement at this point, but certainly they are valuing the ball more than before. Today, they took excellent care of the ball. Of the 15 turnovers, three were 3 second calls (insert clearing of throat) and a palming. So that leaves only 11 ball-handling or passing errors. Not bad considering the pace. Only 4 turnovers in the second half. Hopefully they will continue to improve in that area.
Why all the injuries?- I don't have an answer for that one, but they're nearer healthy than they have been all year. Keeping fingers crossed.
Does Clyde know what he's doing?- If you were holding your breath, you can now exhale. The improvement I've seen since Nov. 7th is astounding. Gillispie deserves the overwhelming credit for this, in my opinion. Some may argue that we have our players back. That's true, but the execution of the offense and defense has gotten better by leaps and bounds. Sticking with his plan, not wavering in his philosphy, but bending a bit on a few issues, shows to me that Clyde knows exactly what he is doing. The players have certainly responded.

Deja Vu All Over Again?
Bradley is truly growing into the floor general we lacked in some ways since the glory days of one sir Chuck Hayes. Azuibuke was getting there, but left early. Rondo could've been all that, but he thought he already was and was virtually uncoachable. With Smooth and Joe slow to show, Bobby Perry became a man but couldn't drag the rest of the team up. Now it looks like Smooth has decided to be that man, and it is a joy to behold.
With Patrick getting a better feel for the college game, Perry has decided to kick it up a notch - and watching the two of them play off each other, feeding each other in the post, getting open as a safety valve when the other gets jammed, and going hard after each other's rebounds - I began to see visions of the skyline near Commonwealth: Could these two be the return of the Twin Towers? What fun it will be over the next two seasons watching this tandem wreak havoc on opposing defenses!
Meanwhile, it looks like Jodie and DJ are both working their butts off to assume the floor general's mantle when Smooth departs, and also finding each other for feeds and open looks.
While I am already lamenting the not-too-distant-future loss of Smooth and Joe, I see a solid core emerging that can write their own ticket over the next few seasons, if they will only continue to work hard and play together. All they need is one more Cat to step up to play the fifth man, and a couple of reliable subs to spell them when they need it.
With Patrick and Perry policing the paint, and Jodie and DJ driving the lanes when open and draining 3s when closed, and another Cat-to-emerge playing cleanup - we are in for some more fun this year and the next and the next ... and if Patrick stays four years, the last one, according to the Vietnamese calendar, will once again be The Year Of The Cat ...

Good shooting Cats
Patterson is better playing the post with Perry helping out. I think they compliment each other. They certainly look for each other.
The guard play is becoming much better. I liked the line up for most of the evening against SC.
What about the 3 point shooting of Jasper? He needs to shoot more.
I am pumped up over this team.

Perry Stevenson
I am excited to see him contribute but I am not yet convinced he is capable of being a difference maker. I think Stevenson will become a very effective role player at UK. If he can learn to create his own shot he could be become even more. Stevenson is enjoying the spoils of PP being doubled and tripled; with PP being such a good passer and drawing so much attention, Stevenson is going to have opportunities to post good #s.
Just keep dunking Perry.. just keep dunking!

Anderson
I have no idea what he is doing now, but Anderson definitely had NBA potential. He was as quick with the ball as any player I have ever seen.
Watching him play was like watching lion running through an open field, just effortless. The game seemed to come so easy to him. Perhaps that led to his downfall as a player. He didn't have to work hard for it, so it didn't mean as much to him.
Just a theory.
