André Woodson finally beats Brian Brohm
Well, not in any way that counts, really, but I can't imagine that a part of Woodson isn't pleased that he was picked over Brohm by ESPN's Ivan Maisel as a pre-season first-team All-American. Pre-season honors are always nice, but the ones at the end of the year are the ones that really count.
Still, this has to be very satisfying for Woodson after laboring in Brohm's shadow (in football, at least) virtually his entire competitive life.
Coverage of this story may be had at:
- The Lexington Herald-Leader
- The Courier Journal -- Eric Crawford
- The Courier-Journal -- Brett Dawson
- The Courier-Journal -- Chris Diggs
- UK Athletics
This is big news for Wildcats fans, and something we can revel in. I know that recognition by Barad Dûr may stick in the craw of some. But as Rick Bozich notes on his blog, Maisel isn't the only one who thinks Woodson is deserving -- NFL Draft Scout projects André as the #1 quarterback drafted in this year's NFL draft.
So congratulations, André, from those of us at A Sea of Blue, and I think we can speak for the entire Big Blue Nation as well. We can't wait to see you take the field this year for the Blue and White!

Hat tip to reader Run and Gun, who clued me in to this last night, but I was too fatigued to post.
I know it's early, but I just can't resist a little schadenfreude. If you can't take a little perverse pleasure in the pain of your bitter rival, what's the point of being a fan?

"Disrespect"
I'll let others argue the merits of one QB over another, but since I'm sitting in the middle of Derby City, surrounded by Card fans......and having lived in Gainesville FL and Knoxville TN...let me make a few remarks about Card fans.
EVERY program (including UK) has EVERY type of fan, good or bad. So while generalizations are dangerous......let me make one anyway.
The majority of Card fans get in a tizzy way too quickly over the least little thing. They get high too quick (BCS!!!).........they get angry too quick (Disrespect!!!!).
I saw a lot of passion (and insanity) in Gainesville and Knoxville but rarely ever the UL-like quick tizzy over very little. I think its a sign of the maturity of the program. Not that Card fans are all immature people....but they are collectively. They just haven't played big football very long and their fans don't have the seasoning that allows for measured response. Every month in Card land is either heaven or hell.
I really didn't want to see them all in an uproar over nothing but now I like Howlett's response...."screw them"......for they are the enemy we must find a way to climb over to get to where we want to be.
We Cat fans may not have alot of BCS experience but at least we can handle a little bad news without getting our panties in a bunch.
GO CATS.....GO ANDRE

UL
I think UL has been disrespected, especially by the national media. Nobody talks about teams backing out of scheduling them (something that UK has been trying to do for the last few years), nobody speaks of the recent NFL success their players are experiencing, and until Forde started writing for ESPN, no national writer would bring their recent success of college athletics to the national stage.
Maybe one day, UK and UL fans could co-exsist, but then again, what fun would that be!

Re: Zach
I think the national media has been leery of jumping on the UL bandwagon because of the pitiful schedule they play, and the fact that they haven't beaten anyone of national consequence, except WVU last year.
As far as the Cardinal players in the NFL, that is a relative figure. UL has more players than ever, but their numbers pale in comparison to the "major powers". Michigan, N. Dame, USC, etc., have dozens of players consistently represented in the League.
This years UL team is chock full of excellence. Their offense, as usual, is loaded. If Allen and Stripling can sustain what they started last year, that will enable them to hit on all cylinders offensively. If not, Brohm will be throwing into a crowded secondary.
I agree 100% with your final statement. This rivalry is ceryainly entertaining to be apart of.

it's a team game not an individual one.....
not Andre Woodson vs. Brian Brohm
Even my home state WVU fans think Woodson is by far the most underrated quarterback in the nation.
You know I'm glad most people pick Brohm over Woodson. That way Andre will have a chip on his shoulder all the time and it will hopefully inspire him to prove his critics wrong.
Actually Andre Woodson is quiet and reserved for the most part. He won't let the "Woodson vs. Brohm" debate rattle him. He would agree with me 100 percent:
It's not Woodson-Brohm.
It's Kentucky-Louisville.
And he would be the first one to tell you that...

Good point ...
Individual accolades, especially pre-season ones, are not much of a victory. Still, it was my intent to point out this tiny little win for Woodson in his battle of perception against Brohm as the Commonwealth's best quarterback. To date, he has had nothing but setbacks.
I didn't mean to minimize the fact that this is a team sport, and that to be successful, individual desires must be subsumed into that of the team.

Card Fans....
Just as UL will win a Basketball game from time to time, so will UK win a Football game. What terrifies UL fans is the thought that UK will become dominate in both sports.
And you are right about the maturity level. Their fans have not learned how to chill out.

I don't really ...
I used to be more of a U of L fan than I am now, back about 15 years or so ago. I still sometimes pull for them against certain opponents.
But they are now a bitter rival, and you have to acknowledge that is true for most UK and U of L fans. That bitterness was made worse by Pitino going there, and the recent football dominance they have had over us, as well as the words of previous UK coaches and our recent basketball dominance of them.
So right now, I would say that I like Louisville better than ... Duke for sure, North Carolina as well, but maybe not Indiana. Too close to call, really.

TRU
Duke hasnt done much in the last few years to earn more of my hatred. I would say UofL is probably the most hated rival amongst my age group.
