Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Bye Bye, Love, I'll See You Later ... Wait, er, umm ...

I am happily and firmly ensconced in my temporary home in Myrtle Beach.  After a small run-in with tropical storm Barry  on Saturday and Sunday, I wake up to a beautiful sunny Monday and find that Billy Donovan has a change of heart!?!?

According to this article, in the Orlando Sun-Sentinel , the Magic will allow Donovan to return to Florida.  A "source" tells the Sun-Sentinel it is "over".

I have to admit, this is a big shock to me.  Never in my wildest imagination could I have seen Billy Donovan, an apparently decisive individual as evidenced by his straightforward rejection of UK's advances, pulling a Dana Altman.  But according to the Sun-Sentinel, that is exactly what will be happening.

What does this mean for Donovan?  Well, his reputation as a person will take a serious hit, if not as a coach.  Florida fans will probably forgive him  -- just ask yourself if we would have forgiven Pitino if he had balked at the last minute instead of taking the Boston job -- but we have to wonder what Donovan was/is thinking.  According to the article, everyone including his wife told him he should take the job in Orlando, and personally, I would have given him the same advice.  Maybe Traitor Rick finally prevailed upon him.  Who knows?

At this point, apparently, Donovan is not talking to anybody and neither is the UF athletic administration.  No matter what the ultimate outcome, this has to go down as one strange year when not one but two coaches agree to go elsewhere and break their word.  What must the Florida recruits be thinking?  What must Christine be thinking?  I only know what I'm thinking -- that I have entered the Twilight Zone of coaching weirdness.

Well, back to my vacation for now.  It truly hit home yesterday when I went to the fringes of enemy territory, Calabash, North Carolina, to a gift shop and found bunches of NC, NC State, Virginia Tech and even Duke college stuff, but absolutely nothing resembling UK.  Nothing like the absence of something you are used to to focus the mind.

I'll post a few pics from the beach later on when I have the time.  Also, be sure to read this diary by reader boobs, who has been watching the Donovan situation also.

Many hours later, we still don't know what is going on with Donovan.  This situation has now officially gone from the unusual to the outright bizarre.  Apparently, the Magic are considering enforcing the contract that Donovan signed.  Ryan Ferguson says that the Magic will not take legal action and Billy will be welcomed back with open arms.  He may be right, but I don't know what this says about Gator fans.

NCAA Hoops Blog says this incident officially makes Billy D. a diva.  Recruiting Wars wonders what this means for Florida's incoming recruiting class.  Meanwhile, an actual diva at Diva Domain blog gives the whole situation a laugh, and thinks that Billy's face must be turning a bit more than pink right now.

It's something to me ...
but then again, they say if you live long enough, you will see everything.

Unbelievable
Seriously. Unbelievable. Although I won't try and judge the guy but I can't help to think that maybe his two back to back titles and national attention has gone to his head a little.

If I was Jai Lucas, and I'm sayin if I was, I'd still ask out of my LOI. At least he'd have an excuse to be let go:

'I think I made a mistake Coach Billy D. Everyone makes mistakes right Coach?'

Loading ... checking memory card ... press Start and enjoy the game.

Well, I agree ...
we should not grant them Duke status yet.

I should imagine everyone involved is as confused as we are at the moment, Billy Donovan apparently included.

Just Wow!

Schizoid
the type to be determined later. And just think, john Clay wrote his article regarding the two Billie's in vain.Oh well, life goes on,and we will continue to be amazed at the turn of events that befall us.

I love that Photoshop.  I wish I were that good.

Photoshop...
that's the reason Photoshop is so popular... you don't have to be good. It's easy once you learn all the tools.

WOW....
what a load of anticlimactic crapp. This is just about as dissapointing as Jai choosing UF the first time.

Oh well, look on the bright side.... now we get a chance to KICK BILLY'S A$$!!!!

Let's show 'em how our Billy rolls.

Scared
I think he is just scared to make the jump into a new situation. He is comfortable at UF and doesnt want to change. IMO that's great for UK as it seems to me that the more comfortable you are the more of your edge you lose. I honetly have lost any respect I had for him. If it were any other job a person couldnt just accept a new job and tell their boss they were quiting and then just come back like nothing had ever happened. This has got to damage him somehow.

Media
If Donovan does indeed return to Florida (as seems likely to happen now), it will be interesting to see how the various national media writers choose to cover the flip-flop.

I imagine Katz and Vitale will fawn all over him, about how he "loves the college game, atmosphere, life" and other such meaningless cliches.

Gregg Doyel will probably rip him.

I'm not sure about DeCourcy, I could see that one go either way.

Looking for a rock to wind a piece of string around.

I'm looking forward to Vitale's...
Now that he has conceded to being wrong about Donovan, how will he spin actually being right?

"OHHH Baby, you can't take the Gator out of Billy Donovan... He's all orange and blue baby! I told you from the start, he's never leaving Gainesville!"

I get nauseous just thinking about it. Isn't he gonna retire soon. I really despise that man.

Yep....
That'll knock DV down a peg, I'd have to put him first on the list. I just can't listen to him call a game. I have even streamed the game on the internet and watched it on tv to avoid listening to that man. Even with the delay it was better than listening to him.

He signed a contract
Unlike Dana Altman, who was yet to sign a contract, Billy D. put his John Hancock on a binding contract and then said "I will not honor it!" No matter what he says, he should have considered everything before signing said document. Again he holds everyone hostage, as he did Kentucky with he statements of, "I am focused on my team!" With us he should have just said not interested and we could have moved on and gotten BCG much earlier! Think of the trouble he has caused for the Magic, their fans, who bought season tickets, because Billy the kid was coming to town! The trouble he caused his own University, it's fans! The limbo he left his new assistant coach in; the limbo he left his old assistant coach in. Also their were his new recruits and old players. Would serve him right if they all transfered or left. Florida fans may be quick to forgive "their basketball messiah", but I will not be! I lost respect for him in the way I felt he strung us along, now I consider him a joke! The shame of it all is he is a good coach; Oh well, maybe they will name the floor in Florida after him now. Dairy Queen could also name a dessert after him, they could call it the Billy D. waffle cone: It can't decide what it wants to be, so it's part vanilla, with strawberry syrup, part chocolate with caramel syrup and the rest is kah-kah! Can't think of anyone who would want to buy it (kind of like the man it is named after!) Bon apetite Florida!
Go Cats!

When did John Kerry become Billy D's agent?
I haven't seen waffling like this since 2004....

I also can't wait for Dukie V to embarass himself drooling all over Billy D's decision to come back.

Kerry 2
Good joke, I liked it.

"I voted for the Magic before I voted against them."

Might as well toss Mitt Romney in that pile as well. As bad as Kerry was for saying stuff to get play, this Romney dude will say ANYTHING to get some applause.

Sort of unnerving!

Billy should run in Mass. He might win!

Any updates?
Is this thing done or what? Just tell me that it's settled, so I can start planning my "Down with Donovan Campaign"...  ;)

by blueblood on Jun 4, 2007 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Not really ...
Latest is that after meeting with Magic reps, it's in their hands.

I can't imagine they'll want to keep a guy coaching who doesn't want to be there.

But if I were them, I'd seek damages for breaking the contract and making them look stupid because he's too big a baby to make a damned decision.

The whole thing is so lame.

BD
Behavior is interesting in that what we do says so much about who we are and who we think we are. And the issues of consistency are paramount in defining character. BD has shown that he is not the solid, powerful man of image but simply like the wizard behind the curtain...pulling strings, setting tone and acting a role. Perhaps he came to terms with the feelinig of being on a larger stage with his smaller talents apparent....perhaps he wants to continue with the big frog smaller pond deal....and perhaps he simply felt he made a mistake. His character shows however when he talks about being pressured. He has practiced his leaving for the BIGS so many times he had the whole thing down pat. He just forgot you cannot practice reality....just deal with it. And remember he even threw trash at UofF....saying the contract was "being held up" by the university....as the university said it was done for weeks. Remember consistent character will out every time if the act goes on long enough....and now BD cannot put the geni back in the bottle. Whatever his decision he has to lead while dealing with the new image he has created....the emporer has no clothes. Thanks every so much UK for BCG.....we shall look as his character comes to the front of the BBN as the leader we believe he is.
