Around SBN: Falcons and Chargers Recap: The Win Is The Thing Bar-right-arrows

OPEN SHOT: What bakes your noodle?

C'mon - we all have 'em.

Those little things in sports that causes us to go into spittle-spewing, eyeball-bulging, vein-popping, spleen-bursting apoplexy, forcing us to run to our computers and furiously type outraged, profanity-embellished tirades on weblogs and message boards.  The things that not just get under our skin, but crawl around in our minds like a malignant worm, driving us temporarily insane with uncontrollable rage.

Well, maybe not quite all that.  But you know what I mean.  For example:

  • Dickie V. giving Coach K repeated wet, sloppy man-kisses on national TV.

  • Gregg Doyel insulting Kentucky basketball in his own nasty, inimitable way.

  • [Insert sportswriter here]'s effusive praise of Traitor Rick.

  • Florida fans banging their sunken, hairless chests about "championships."

  • Billy Packer announcing ... well, anything.

We all have 'em.  What's yours?

Mine in a landslide
is when Digger Phelps has a coordinating highlighter/tie combination.

Drives me insane.

by piketaylor on Jun 26, 2007 6:16 PM EDT   0 recs

I wish I had thought of that.
I used to respect Digger a lot, but he has become more of a nuisance lately.

I gotta say ...
Packer.  Packer drives me nuts, often causing me loose my religion at the television.

I don't know why I listen to him.  I think it is a kind of morbid fascination with the possibilities of the exegesis he will drive me to.

Fortunately, my wife hates him more than I do, so I don't have to leave the house or anything.  The dogs  run and hide when they hear him come on, though ...

Bad Calls
Watching on tv and seeing what looks like a bad call(againist our cats of course) and NEVER showing a replay of that!  Then the ensuing comments that follow about how well the officiating has been?  Are they serious???

by Magnoliacat on Jun 26, 2007 6:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Yeah ...
an obviously bad call really gets the face red and the profanity rolling in my home. :-)

by Truzenzuzex on Jun 26, 2007 11:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Packer
Before I even read your list Packer popped into my head just after reading the title of the thread.

Also, bad calls drive me crazy particularly against the whoever is playing Duke. That happens way too frequently!

Over the past three years Morris losing the tip made me curse way too often. I always wondered why not start Shagari for the tip and take him out at the first dead ball. Oh well. I have a feeling that UK will win more tips now even with a smaller lineup.

Heh, heh!
"Sunken, hairless chests... "

That was good!  I'm still chortling.  :)

No question ...
Losing to Vandy. I know it's not an announcer thing, but IT'S VANDY FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY.

The Online home of Big Blue Nation ...

by JL Blue on Jun 26, 2007 9:49 PM EDT   0 recs

I guess that should bother me more ...
well, I don't know.  Vandy has produced some really good teams, a few of which we have only beaten by the grace of God.

I kind of feel like Vandy has just been collecting on a few "owesies" from the Almighty.

Loosing six times to Florida -- now that makes my spittle fly a bit when I talk about it.

by Truzenzuzex on Jun 26, 2007 11:19 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

me too
i also thought of packer right away, but after reading your list tru, can i add an "all of the above" option that includes JL's suggestion of vandy and andy katz.

oh, and that guy from the orlando sentinel...i want to say bianchi.

GO BIG BLUE!! GO BIG BLUE!!

by UKWildCatFanatic on Jun 26, 2007 10:21 PM EDT   0 recs

Ah, Bianchi.
Yeah, he is something, but he rarely gets me too exercised.  He's just a partisan, and I can really empathize with that.

by Truzenzuzex on Jun 26, 2007 11:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Packer
He is annoying because he clearly thinks he is superior to everyone watching the game. He announced during last year's title game between UF and OSU that Greg Oden "will be this year's M.O.P. despite being on the losing team."  WTF?  Corey Brewer ended up winning it.
Orange & Blue Hue http://www.orangeandbluehue.com

by Gatorpilot on Jun 26, 2007 10:50 PM EDT   0 recs

M.O.P.
Oden was the "Most Oldlooking Player"

by cthom on Jun 26, 2007 11:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oden looks ...
older than me -- and I'll reach the big five-oh in a couple of months.

I'll bet he never gets carded.  Ever.

Peeves
Packer
Packer
Packer
Packer
Packer

My top five. I am out of the area and signed up for Sirus radio to totally avoid Packer. I can't even tolerate him on other games not just ours.   I also find the Digger color show interesting but irritating.

by CAWebb on Jun 27, 2007 8:43 AM EDT   0 recs

Me peeves
The losses done really get me all that riled up now that we have a new coach because that is fixable but the announcers seem like they will live forever.

Billy packers and the way he pronuonces Donovan.
     ITS NOT DUNAVAN!!!!!!
Anything that comes out of Vitale's Mouth.
      especailly PTP'er and Diaper Dandy!!!
Digger Phelps
Florida Fans

The only tv analyst I actually like is Jay Bilas.
He played at Duke and kisses K's ass less thant Vitale.

Random Carolina fans
I have always hated the fact that there are random people in Kentucky who are UNC fans.  Do you think anyone in North Carolina who doesn't have some family tie to Kentucky or to UK is a UK fan?  I hate the Tarholes.  Probably b/c they're the only program who I think historically compares to our own.  I don't know if it's b/c of Michael Jordan, the baby blue unis, or the marketing power of Nike, but have you EVER been to a sports apparel store that doesn't sell UNC stuff?

by DoubleSecretProbation on Jun 27, 2007 9:57 AM EDT   0 recs

No!
I can't figure it out, either.  I guarantee you, if you go to a store in Carolina (I know, I was just in several 3 weeks ago) you will NEVER see a UK jersey or logo item.

What IS up with that?

by Truzenzuzex on Jun 27, 2007 10:05 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

good point
here in chicago, i have so much trouble trying to find anything that says Kentucky on it. the only things you can find are hats that have just UK on them or a t-shirt that'll kust say Kentucky across the chest. I could make a t-shirt liket that at home.

But if you want UNC, dUKe, or even Florida stuff, you'll have no problem. that does piss me off...can't believe i forgot about that.

and even a lot of things by nike or other companies that aren't actually linked to UNC come in the crappy carolina blue. i refuse to wear that color ever.

GO BIG BLUE!! GO BIG BLUE!!

It's the ladies
I was complaining about this to my wife once. She is oblivious to college sports, but she said "Isn't North Carolina the one with the pretty blue?". I respond that UK's blue looks better and is much classier. She quickly agreed to keep the peace, but said "Well, I know alot of girls who have Carolina shirts because they like the color. It goes well with their wardrobe."

I think that may explain it. You have a bunch of people who would not know Vince Carter from Jared Carter, but find the pansy, girlie Carolina blue a better fit for their shoes.

by PapaKat on Jun 27, 2007 10:54 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You know ...
that actually makes some sense.  That powder blue does unquestionably appeal to women, probably more than men.

That never occurred to me.

by Truzenzuzex on Jun 27, 2007 12:32 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Cat fans in Carolina
There are a ton of Cat fans in the Carolinas. I'd feel comfortable saying there are a lot more Cat fans in Carolina then Tarheels in Kentucky. I don't have any stats to back it up, but I see lots of UK stickers, plates, hats, etc all over the Charlotte area. Someone told me that a lot of IBM workers got transfered from Lex 20 some years ago. I don't know, but in my case moving was job related. At least I'm in a basketball state.

Top 5 Worst Announcers
  1. Billy Butt Packer
  2. Dukie V
  3. Tim McCarver (I'd rather hear my dog puke for 3 hours)
  4. That annoying Yankees guy (The uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh Yank-Mes win! Shoot me!)
  5. Chris Berman (His schtick was funny 15 years ago.....not now)

This ...
Tim McCarver (I'd rather hear my dog puke for 3 hours)

is funny.

I'm in...
  1. Packer (by far) and CBS for that matter -- for putting a higher priority on longevity than having the best (especially for the FF).  I'm envisioning Jim Nance sitting beside Billy's propped up cadaver... "Congratulations, Billy, on announcing your 150th Final Four...".
  2. Officials that mail it in on game day. And ditto what Magnolia said.
  3. Coaches that cheat and move on, untouched, while the school gets punished.
  4. Heck, while I'm here... Coach K's whining about, well, anything&everything (calls, bad press, Duke hatin', etc.) I'm with davw83 -- he really should frow/grow - a pair.

by bluenva on Jun 27, 2007 10:21 AM EDT   0 recs

makes my skin crawl
  1. Bobby Knight
  2. Pete Rose
  3. An out of town columnist inserting "race" into the discussion of KY basketball

by run and gun on Jun 27, 2007 11:28 AM EDT   0 recs

I'll take a double order of...
#3

I just don't understand why it's such a horrible thing to be prejudicial against Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, Asians, Lesbians, Gays, Men, Women, Etc. However, it's perfectly fine if you want to prejudge rednecks and people who live in "the South".

Fro a pair
Fro a pair made me laugh my butt off once I realized my typo.

I vote for "fro a pair" ...
as the new inside joke around here.

Thad Matta's comments on the Uk coaching job...
I don't believe he was ever even offered the job, but he felt the need to "speak slowly" to everyone in Kentucky and tell them that he wasn't interested in the job. What a pretentious prick!!

by blueblood on Jun 27, 2007 12:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Matta and OH natives in general
I live in OH and everyone here thinks that people from KY are inbred idiots that don't wear shoes (and I'm being serious when I say that)..truth is, I have met more ignorant racist people here in 2 years than I had ever met in KY. BTW, I hate Ohio State.

Old farts...
...who sit on their hands in the lower level of Rupp.  Always has pissed me off the most.

And "Fudge."  I seriously think he wears women's lingerie.

slight paraphrase
just another line in the comedic gold that is "the office"

Michael: For emergency contact put down Billy F. Packer. You know what the "F" stands for?
Ryan: [immediately] Fudge?

GO BIG BLUE!! GO BIG BLUE!!

Speaking of Gregg Doyel
You should have heard Marty Brenneman go off on him on the Reds broadcast last night. Doyel is on 1530 Homer in Cincinnati from 9-noon with a tool named Mo Egger. Anyway, he made a joke about the Reds needing to sign Rod Beck (who just died). Marty went absolutely nuts on him.....freaking hilarious.

Ohio
Every state has rednecks. Southern states have hillbillies. I really think there is a difference. Redneck just means rural people while hillbilly has more of a southern connotation.

by davw83 on Jun 27, 2007 2:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Either way...
its just another form of prejudicial treatment, just like the racist comments. I try really hard not to get on my political soapbox here, but it applies to the original subject matter in this specific blog.

Interesting - Wash state...
I live there currently, and haven't heard that one yet. I'll ask my wife, she grew up over here on the left coast.
