The One You Want: Rotnei Clarke

Every year, there are a few high school players that you look at who for whetever reasons strike you. Sometimes, as with a Patrick Patterson or Rajon Rondo, it's obvious (talent, talent, talent).

Other times, the reasons any recruitnik falls in love with a high school player's game are less tangible -- something more akin to a high school crush than an adult relationship, to continue the creepy metaphor.

This past recruiting season, many fans had this response to Marshall Moses, the enigma forward Matt Jones' crew really brought into the Big Blue zeitgeist. Moses was a youtube/myspace phenomenon, and it remains to be seen if he'll ever be as "essential" as he was built up to be by the legions of UK recruiting fanatics.

I have spoken of before of the "recruiting crush," which for me before last year was current UK sophomore-to-be Perry Stevenson. While everyone was ga-ga over Brandan Wright (with good reason, talent-talent, etc.), I loved the idea of the lanky Stevenson manning the weakside block for the next four years.

In that case, through a series of random occurences, my "recruiting crush" ended up in Blue & White. That doesn't always happen, of course. UK missed out on Tyler Hansbrough, Jared Jeffries and other guys I had prayed to the recruiting Gods for.

This year, the guy who stands out the most to me -- and to a growing number of summer-bored UK fans -- is Oklahoma sharp-shooter Rotnei Clarke.

Listed at a generous 6'0", Clarke is one of those gym rats -- the Patrick Sparks from Western Kentucky clone -- that UK fans love, and his shooting displays in Oklahoma prep hoops are legendary. In his high school career he's had games of 55 points as a sophomore, 57 as a junior and 60 in a state tournament game again Vian of OK.

As if the word of mouth wasn't enough, this profile from last week cemented his place in the sights of UK recruiting junkies.

He also just happens to be best buds with another UK target, top-40 stud Willie Warren. that the two have talked about being a package deal only further drives up the stakes.

With so much time, and so many twists and turns, before we get there, who knows where Clarke will end up. But one this is for sure, in the pantheon of recruiting crushes, this gym rat from tiny Verdegris, Oklahoma, is a name on the rise.

Man, I just don't see it.....
the guy dribbles the ball way out in front, and doesn't protect his dribble. He shoots the ball from his chin. I say he gets eaten alive in the SEC. If he's going to spend that much time in the gym, he should focus on gaining some strength so he can shoot the ball from above his head instead of starting his shot at his chest. But then again, I'm not paid to be a recruiter or evaluate talent.

Clark
Pair this kid with a great penetrator and you have a deadly backcourt. UK has been lacking great shooters and Billy G's comments about this kid's toughness make it clear that he could more than get it dont in the SEC. I defintley have a recruiting crush on him.

No quarrels there....
I definitely think the kid has the desire and commitment to be a great player. And please, don't second guess the guy making millions of dollars to coach because of my thoughts. I'm sure that BG knows exactly what he's doing.

I don't think that sparks shot from his chest though. I'm pretty sure that he had a high start(forehead) and a good release.

I'm not saying that this kid can't do it, just that some things in his game will have to change. Of course, I'm sure that almost every high school senior has to change some stuff about his game. One thing is for sure though, he'll work his butt off to improve if he believes in his coach, and isn't likely to give up until after the final buzzer. Both of which are reasons to recruit the kid.

Didn't Sparks ...
shoot from his chest?

This kid has got a shot though. Their may be time for him to improve his game and his dribble, but blueblood does make a good point.

Cool...
...here's hoping he's more Dan Issel than Bernard Cote.

That's great, but what does it mean?
A verbal really doesn't mean anything does it? There are really no repercussions for backing out of a verbal. I think I recall hearing about a few recruits this year that backed out of their verbal to go elsewhere.

Am I mistaken on this? Sounds to me like BCG is trying to create a tidal wave by starting with a few small ripples. The older recruits are more hesitant to commit to UK, but the younger ones are jumping on board. So if you get enough younger ones, maybe you might start to sway the older ones.

Nah ...
it's just like the verbal he got from GJ Villarino, a verbal.

I don't believe recruits can sign NLOI's until the early signing period in their senior year, so neither Villarino or Euton are formally or irrevocably committed to UK.

I'm obviously not paid millions for this...
I just don't see it.  Granted, that was all in one game... but from what I saw, there's 1000 short, slow white kids all across the country that could put together a one game highlight reel just like that.

I'm sure there's more to him than meets the eye.  But who's to say he's not the next JP Blevins?

by chirop1 on Jun 18, 2007 2:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Its early
Its defintley early but I think the verbal does several good things.
  1. It keeps other coaches at bay a little. I say a little not a lot so competition for the kid to sign wont be as high.
  2. This is a really high profile Kentucky kid that is staying instate and not prepping out of state and he is likley to ranked very high in his class. Rankings could change though as it is very early.  He also has a very highly acclaimed class mate that could be brought aboard.
Its good news and signals UK is on the rise but what we really need are 08 commits.

How highly ranked was Cote? I dont remember but I didnt think it was very high at all plus he was Canadian not Kentuckian so that instantly makes Euton better. Rembmer this kid is 15 and 6'8 and hanging with other kids at the minicamp. How much taller will this kid get. Im hoping 6'11.

I'm just being snarky...
...Cote was being recruited by Kansas -- he was headed on his official visit when 9/11 happened, and he committed to Tubby before visiting anywhere else -- but I was mostly just talking about the Cote we actually saw play.

Who knows if that kid was any good. Tubby never played him, and when he did, it was as a power forward.

He did suck royally at Northwestern though.

Juniors
I was under the impression a recruit could sign in the late period of his Junior season. I cold be mistaken though.

Just watched the video of Clarke ...
Man, that kid has skillz.

That is one quick damn release he has, and every shot is no rim.  He plays with serious passion, if this game is any indication.  He would be a perfect fit for UK.

I like this guy a lot.

I saw the quick release...
but that will only work a few times until the D gets the timing. With clarke that short, it's gonna be tough to get it over these 6'3"+ PGs in the SEC.

by blueblood on Jun 18, 2007 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, no ...
nobody times a release that quick.  He gets it out of his hand before a defender has time to react.  He'll wind up shooting for 4 all the time.

His size will be an issue, but all he needs is a crack, like Lofton.  I have been watching basketball for a long, long time, and I have seen very few releases that quick that were that pure.

This kid is a playah.

I hope you are right...
I did see the shot from the dribble, and it was quick and accurate. I keep wanting to say that he "shoots from the hip"(re:gunslingers).  I really hope that you are right, but I know that defenders in the SEC don't play 3ft off their man at the top of the arc unless he burns them a few times with that quick step around and shot. The opposition would have to play a man in the middle to stop that(1-3-1,2-1-2), etc, which would expose the wing shooters to open looks. Could be a great thing. But I'm gonna have wait and see how he handles someone like Jasper. I don't see him shooting over Jasper, but he could definitely get the step on him. I guess that quick step is what allows him to shoot from his chin, the D has to stay off him or they give up the dribble drive.

Osby to Miss state?!?
just how deep is the SEC going to be? That's all we need is another competitor. As if UT, UF, and Vandy aren't enough. Did Vandy lose enough this year to be a non-issue yet? OHHH and let's not forget Arkansas. Who knows what Pelphrey will get out of the hawgs this year.

SEC
Miss St. gets some good players every so often. Stanbury seems to me to have a hard time really building a balanced team. Im not sure how much they lost but they could be pretty good this season.

Vandy lost Derrick Byars so that really helps out a lot. He might go first round in the draft.

Steven Hill will be back for the Hogs. Seems to me like he should have graduated by now. I find him really irritating. I dont like fluffy or long haired white basketball players. They drive me crazy and I am white myself.
