Gardner-Webb at Kentucky -- Open Game Thread
This is the official ASoB Open Game Thread for Gardner-Webb at Kentucky.
We saw a fair defensive performance last night, and a barely passable offensive performance.
We saw lots of players, including two walk-on's.
We saw a walk-on get a double-double and very little of Patrick Patterson.
We saw Joe Crawford score an impressive 20 points in limited minutes.
What will tonight bring? Hopefully better offensive and defensive execution, and the same or better level of effort and commitment.
My keys to this game are:
- Share the basketball -- only 11 assists total for UK last night.
- Keep trying to get the ball inside, no matter who is on the blocks
- Play smarter on defense, and with controlled speed on offense
- Avoid the "dumb" fouls
- Continue to reduce turnovers
I love the effort we are seeing from players who we wouldn't expect to contribute. I'd like to see more from our studs.
I'll be watching and posting comments all evening. Your comments are welcome and encouraged. Type 'em if you've got em!
GO, CATS!

Go!!! (AWAY) CATS!!!!!!!
Crawford got abused all night on the defensive end of the court and heres a shocker....He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside when it matters. He always plays well when we are up by 20!!!! Bradley?????What a joke.......... Heres what he learned over the summer.................NOTHING!!!!!!! Keep forcing it when its obviously NOT there!!!!! And I hope that old BILLY CLYDE has some emotion in there somewhere, cuz when your team is down 20 and you don't get angry.. Thats not Confidence, its HOPELESSNESS. He was watching the same game we were, and he must have known too that we were never getting back into that game. That's a sad place to be as a fan, watching your team down big to a bunch of NOBODIES!!!!!! And KNOWING they have no chance to get back into the game. It is inconceivable to me that Crawford and Bradley were ever a part of a Top Tier (actually we are far from that right now) Program!! They are AWFUL, HEARTLESS, and WEAK all the way around. Definitely no leadership skills between them. KENTUCKY PRIDE....... LETS HOPE THAT THE YOUNG PLAYERS DON'T FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE BEING SET FOR THEM BY OUR SENIORS!!!!!!!!!

They have a lot to unlearn, and now Gillispie has two weeks to break some bad habits and ingrain some new ones.
Let's just wish them all luck.

On Crawford and Bradley
Did you watch the game last night??? did you see Bradley continuously force up bad shot after bad shot in the paint? Did you see Crawford getting beat 10 times in a row by a goofball who was just smarter in everyway?? Those are the leaders of this team. Not Patterson, Not Legion.. Don't get me wrong we will win some games with those 2. But we will lose more because of those 2!!
Sorry for the negativity, I am true CATFAN and will root them on however hopelessly, regardless!! But my views are based on the reality I have seen from those two for three years, and I have seen Nothing this year to make me feel any different. If this teram gets hot and goes on a roll it will be at the hands of Patterson and Meeks, maybe even Legion. Crawdord and Bradley will be great on the nights they show up. How many nights will that be is the question.
by BrunoCat on Nov 8, 2007 9:45 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Fine ...
Crawford has had several nights of good defense and good shooting.
Don't smart off to me on my own blog, please. Of course I watched the game. Yes, Bradley and Crawford played badly last night, in all phases of the game. But it was one game.
I understand the negativity, it is a natural fan reaction. Bradley and Crawford have disappointed Cat fans for the last couple of years, but the have also had good moments. Bradley simply fails to grasp the essential quality of leadership that is sacrifice -- you must sacrifice yourself, your numbers, your glory, for team success.
Similarly, Crawford's ego is writing checks his game just can't cash, and is overdrawing the team very quickly when he plays like he did last night. Fact of life. But they will improve, or they will spend far more of their senior year watching than playing.
by Truzenzuzex on Nov 8, 2007 10:08 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry Bro!!! We are on the same team
However, It is not one game it is TWO CAREERS ( SIX YEARS)(180 games) of not being able to grasp team concepts. That old "they will improve line does not hold water anymore!!! They have not improved at all in three years. This year is The Year?? Doubtful!!!!
This season hinges on the youngsters playing above the level they should be expected to play!! I love the nucleus going forward with Patterson Legion and Meeks.
It is obvious that Crawford and Bradley will never be winners!! (at least they won't cost Billy Clyde his job!!) Tubby was not so fortunate!!!!
Again, no disrespect meant! Just venting about a season that already promises to be unfulfilling!

bradley and crawford
based on yesterday, legion will have some more minutes coming to him.
i do have one question: it seems bradley and crawford are getting all the blame (as well being called tubby's guys, which i know they are), while the young guys are getting credit for looking like they actually wanted to win. meeks is included in the latter group, but he's a tubby recruit too (which conveniently doesn't get mentioned. now i didn't see the game but meeks didn't shoot the ball well. was it just a matter of not having a good night or was he forcing up shots a la ramel and joe?
by UKWildCatFanatic on Nov 8, 2007 10:38 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Meeks with the youngsters
by BrunoCat on Nov 8, 2007 10:52 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
misunderstanding
i also didn't mean to put you specifically on the spot about lumping in meeks with the young guys and not as a tubby recruit. i've seen it a few times, and it just seems convenient and picking and choosing just to make a point (one that i don't completely disagree with).
by UKWildCatFanatic on Nov 8, 2007 11:13 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you
You are correct!!! We fortunately have some Serious Talent ( Patterson has soft hands and great instincts. More than once in this game he made great catches, and smooth passes on the interior.) Legion showed exactly what we wanted to see... The ability to score in bunches!! He will take over games in the future, That is So EXCITING to think about. Meeks - You don't have to say anything about him. If you did it would be easy.......SOLID PLAYER!!!!!
BILLY CLYDE......... A LIttle emotion wouldn't hurt would it. No knocks on him yet however. Too soon!!!! Solid Recruits, where would we be without them? FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT!!!! I just wish it were now. I hate the rebuilding stage... But you can't turn around mediocrity in two games or maybe even 20 games!! I will try to focus on the positives and accept that we are rebuilding the TITANIC!!!!! That TUBBY ran into the ICEBERG!!!!
I don't Hate TUBBY either. I think he is a good man and hope he does well at Minnesota, just wish we could have sent Crawford and Bradley with him. I would rather watch the Youngsters stand on their own and learn to crawl, walk, and eventually RUN
on their own. They would benefit more and become cohesive faster than they will with winning the few games that Crawford and Bradley show up for.
