Gardner-Webb at Kentucky -- Open Game Thread

This is the official ASoB Open Game Thread for Gardner-Webb at Kentucky.

We saw a fair defensive performance last night, and a barely passable offensive performance.

We saw lots of players, including two walk-on's.

We saw a walk-on get a double-double and very little of Patrick Patterson.

We saw Joe Crawford score an impressive 20 points in limited minutes.

What will tonight bring?  Hopefully better offensive and defensive execution, and the same or better level of effort and commitment.

My keys to this game are:

  • Share the basketball -- only 11 assists total for UK last night.
  • Keep trying to get the ball inside, no matter who is on the blocks
  • Play smarter on defense, and with controlled speed on offense
  • Avoid the "dumb" fouls
  • Continue to reduce turnovers

I love the effort we are seeing from players who we wouldn't expect to contribute.  I'd like to see more from our studs.

I'll be watching and posting comments all evening.  Your comments are welcome and encouraged.  Type 'em if you've got em!

GO, CATS!

Not exactly ...
the start we had in mind.

I come a little late to start following the game..
and we're apparently behind 14-2.  To Gardner Webb.  Um, what?

by blue kentucky girl on Nov 7, 2007 9:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They are ...
shooting lights out, and we are missing layups and turning the ball over.

by Truzenzuzex on Nov 7, 2007 9:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

that certainly
is not a winning combination.  For us, anyway.

by blue kentucky girl on Nov 7, 2007 9:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Crawford ...
misses a bad shot and a layup.

by Truzenzuzex on Nov 7, 2007 9:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

going back
thought the play by play...we started out down 14-0?

for anyone watching the game, how pissed was BCG?

Nice shot ...
by Patterson, and took a charge. Down 11 with the ball.

We are just ...
not getting it done on either end.

by Truzenzuzex on Nov 7, 2007 9:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They ...
are giving us lots of fouls.

That may be the only positive.  That, and we are taking pretty good care of our defensive boards.

Down 12 ...
shooting 1 and the bonus.

BRADLEY
WHEN WILL THE CATS LEARN TO NEVER NEVER NEVER PASS THE BALL TO RAMEL ON THE LAST POSSESSION OF THE HALF?

HE WILL UNDOUBTEDLY TURN THE BALL OVER.

I dont understand. if I were him and I repeatedly looked at the box score after the game and noticed I had quite a few turnovers I would STOP WALKING AND MAKING BAD PASSES AND FORCING CRAPPY SHOTS!!!!

Sorry guys. I had to let that out.

We have to think about this game for 2 weeks? Ugh.

P.S. I can't wait until Crawford/Bradley graduate, they're nothing but trouble. People will give Gillispie hell for this game, but just remember the ONLY two players that played well were his players.

by GregJ on Nov 8, 2007 12:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Don't be ...
too hard on 'em.  Gillispie and this team has really been chucked into the fire, even if it was supposed to be just a small one.

A couple weeks of practice, and I think we will see significant improvement.  No matter what we think, Crawford and Bradley have a lot to unlearn, and that is always a challenge.

by Truzenzuzex on Nov 8, 2007 12:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Overall..
I think the team, really, even if it didn't appear wholly to be the case, is very tired. They've had the emotional stress of getting used to new people and a new coach, and the physical stress of a new style of play. Honestly, this was only their second game using that style, and under that coach. So, while I might've been caught in the moment earlier, now that I look back at it, it isn't too heavy of an upset. We executed poorly, we didn't perform to standard, however, considering the pressure and strain the team has endured through the offseason and getting ready, it isn't surprising that they're struggling. This isn't a team that is opening up playing a style they mastered last year. You can basically consider every member of tihs team a Freshman.

tired to me.  4 games in seven days at the beginning of a season is tough, even against weak comp.

They need more time than that before being thrown into the pool, even the shallow end, apparently.

Go!!! (AWAY) CATS!!!!!!!
Wow, I am excited about our young players, Patterson, Legion, Meeks.... They are going to develop into a solid contender. We are going to have to wait til we lose TUBBY's LOSERS though!!!
Crawford got abused all night on the defensive end of the court and heres a shocker....He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside when it matters.  He always plays well when we are up by 20!!!! Bradley?????What a joke.......... Heres what he learned over the summer.................NOTHING!!!!!!! Keep forcing it when its obviously NOT there!!!!! And I hope that old BILLY CLYDE has some emotion in there somewhere, cuz when your team is down 20 and you don't get angry.. Thats not Confidence, its HOPELESSNESS. He was watching the same game we were, and he must have known too that we were never getting back into that game. That's a sad place to be as a fan, watching your team down big to a bunch of NOBODIES!!!!!! And KNOWING they have no chance to get back into the game. It is inconceivable to me that Crawford and Bradley were ever a part of a Top Tier (actually we are far from that right now) Program!! They are AWFUL, HEARTLESS, and WEAK all the way around. Definitely no leadership skills between them. KENTUCKY PRIDE....... LETS HOPE THAT THE YOUNG PLAYERS DON'T FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE BEING SET FOR THEM BY OUR SENIORS!!!!!!!!!

Let's ...
not get carried away.  Both Crawford and Bradley have shown some good things this year.  They lack consistency, but since when is this new?

They have a lot to unlearn, and now Gillispie has two weeks to break some bad habits and ingrain some new ones.

Let's just wish them all luck.

by Truzenzuzex on Nov 8, 2007 9:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

On Crawford and Bradley
What are the good things you are talking about????  I would like you to list them here.  And please don't mention Crawfords 20 points the night before,  They were ahead by 10 every time he put a shot in the air, and he is definately not intelligent enought to realize that overplaying the passing lanes was getting him killed last night!!   When your team is getting blown out in the first 5 minutes of the game by ???? who???  You have to have leadership skills to keep your team disciplined and un waivering!!!
Did you watch the game last night???  did you see Bradley continuously force up bad shot after bad shot in the paint?  Did you see Crawford getting beat 10 times in a row by a goofball who was just smarter in everyway??  Those are the leaders of this team.  Not Patterson, Not Legion..  Don't get me wrong we will win some games with those 2.  But we will lose more because of those 2!!
Sorry for the negativity, I am true CATFAN and will root them on however hopelessly, regardless!!  But my views are based on the reality I have seen from those two for three years, and I have seen Nothing this year to make me feel any different.  If this teram gets hot and goes on a roll it will be at the hands of Patterson and Meeks, maybe even Legion.  Crawdord and Bradley will be great on the nights they show up.  How many nights will that be is the question.
C A T S !!!! CATS CATS CATS!!!!!

by BrunoCat on Nov 8, 2007 9:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Fine ...
In the first exhibition game, Bradley played well, and unselfishly.  He turned the ball over, but when hasn't he?

Crawford has had several nights of good defense and good shooting.

Don't smart off to me on my own blog, please.  Of course I watched the game.  Yes, Bradley and Crawford played badly last night, in all phases of the game.  But it was one game.

I understand the negativity, it is a natural fan reaction.  Bradley and Crawford have disappointed Cat fans for the last couple of years, but the have also had good moments.  Bradley simply fails to grasp the essential quality of leadership that is sacrifice -- you must sacrifice yourself, your numbers, your glory, for team success.

Similarly, Crawford's ego is writing checks his game just can't cash, and is overdrawing the team very quickly when he plays like he did last night.  Fact of life.  But they will improve, or they will spend far more of their senior year watching than playing.

by Truzenzuzex on Nov 8, 2007 10:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry Bro!!! We are on the same team
Yo Bro!!!!  I did not mean any disrespect!!!  Fo Sho!!

However,  It is not one game it is TWO CAREERS ( SIX YEARS)(180 games) of not being able to grasp team concepts.  That old "they will improve line does not hold water anymore!!!  They have not improved at all in three years.  This year is The Year?? Doubtful!!!!

This season hinges on the youngsters playing above the level they should be expected to play!!  I love the nucleus going forward with Patterson Legion and Meeks.

It is obvious that Crawford and Bradley will never be winners!!  (at least they won't cost Billy Clyde his job!!)     Tubby was not so fortunate!!!!

Again, no disrespect meant! Just venting about a season that already promises to be unfulfilling!

bradley and crawford
it's not just that those two guys will definitely improve...it's that they will improve, or they'll be sitting on the bench. BCG doesn't care that they're seniors. the ones playing the best and the smartest will get more playing time.

based on yesterday, legion will have some more minutes coming to him.

i do have one question: it seems bradley and crawford are getting all the blame (as well being called tubby's guys, which i know they are), while the young guys are getting credit for looking like they actually wanted to win. meeks is included in the latter group, but he's a tubby recruit too (which conveniently doesn't get mentioned. now i didn't see the game but meeks didn't shoot the ball well. was it just a matter of not having a good night or was he forcing up shots a la ramel and joe?

GO BIG BLUE!! GO BIG BLUE!!

Meeks with the youngsters
I know Meeks is a Tubby guy, however from day one he has showed a desire and level of skill that puts him above the rest.  The only reason I mention him with the Young Players is because he is one of those young players.  The line from the game may look skewed, but if it weren't for Meeks the CATS may have been down 25 to nothing to start the game.  Those three players however are going to be the foundation for whats to come and I believe the Foundation is going to be strong!!!!!!  Whether or not BILLY CLYDE cares or not is irrelavent?  Seniors are supposed to lead their teams in tough situations.  If you bench them you are still without leadership, whether they play or not has no bearing on the fact that we have no leadership on the court.  Thats the reality of it all!!  All BCG's Caring in the world won't make Bradley or Crawford leaders.  Or Players for that matter.
C A T S !!!! CATS CATS CATS!!!!!

by BrunoCat on Nov 8, 2007 10:52 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

misunderstanding
you misunderstood my point about BCG not caring. obviously he wants those two to be the leaders on this team and step up. i don't think there's any doubt there. i meant that BCG isn't going to keep them on the court just because they're seniors. if a player doesn't step up and play smart basketball, it won't matter if you're a freshman or a senior...they're going to find themselves riding the pine.

i also didn't mean to put you specifically on the spot about lumping in meeks with the young guys and not as a tubby recruit. i've seen it a few times, and it just seems convenient and picking and choosing just to make a point (one that i don't completely disagree with).

I agree with you
I believe that may be the only cure for Bradley and Crawford.  THE BENCH!!!!!!

You are correct!!!  We fortunately have some Serious Talent ( Patterson has soft hands and great instincts.  More than once in this game he made great catches, and smooth passes on the interior.)  Legion showed exactly what we wanted to see... The ability to score in bunches!!  He will take over games in the future, That is So EXCITING to think about.  Meeks - You don't have to say anything about him.  If you did it would be easy.......SOLID PLAYER!!!!!
BILLY CLYDE......... A LIttle emotion wouldn't hurt would it.  No knocks on him yet however.  Too soon!!!!  Solid Recruits, where would we be without them?  FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT!!!!  I just wish it were now.  I hate the rebuilding stage...  But you can't turn around mediocrity in two games or maybe even 20 games!!  I will try to focus on the positives and accept that we are rebuilding the TITANIC!!!!!  That TUBBY ran into the ICEBERG!!!!
I don't Hate TUBBY either.   I think he is a good man and hope he does well at Minnesota, just wish we could have sent Crawford and Bradley with him.  I would rather watch the Youngsters stand on their own and learn to crawl, walk,  and eventually RUN
on their own.  They would benefit more and become cohesive faster than they will with winning the few games that Crawford and Bradley show up for.
