SEC Power Poll -- Week 8

It's Monday, and that means it's time for the SEC Power Poll. Here is my ballot for the SEC Power Poll for Week 8. As usual, you can find the aggregated results at Garnet and Black Attack when he posts the final poll tomorrow.
Kentucky dropped a bit, as they should, but I won't drop them much, because they have won one and lost two to the class of the conference. South Carolina had a really bad loss at home to Vanderbilt, and that has to hurt them more than losing to Florida hurts the Cats.
So where do we find ourselves overall? Well, it seems to me like the cream is starting to rise to the top, namely LSU, who defeated a very game and impressive Auburn team this weekend in Death Valley, and Florida, who handled the Wildcats in Commonwealth Stadium. Anyone who didn't see the LSU game missed a classic.
Alabama is starting to show signs of life, but I am still skeptical of them. Tennessee got creamed by Floria, and Alabama creamed Tennessee, who beat Georgia. I don't know what to make of it all, but we should have a much better feel for how the league is likely to go after the coming week, when UT heads down to Columbia to try to recover from the thumping they took at the hands of Satan Saban and his Crimson Tide.
If ever a quality team was made for the Volunteers to get well on, it is the Gamecocks with their unfortunate offense -- at least UT will have a chance to outscore them. Auburn is looking very dangerous in the West, I'm glad we don't have to play them. The Iron Bowl is going to be special this year, no doubt about it.
I still feel like UK has a great chance to win out, even though we have to go down to Athens to take on the Dawgs between the hedges. Tennessee looks extremely vulnerable on defense, and their offense is less impressive than you would think given their weapons. So if Kentucky can take care of business for homecoming with Mississippi State, the Cats can lick our wounds in the bye week and prepare for a spectacular finish.
As usual, critique away!| Team | Rank | Date | Comments | |||||||
| LSU (W) | 1 | 10/22/2007 | I heard Les Miles is buying a dump truck to haul his testicles to games. A wheelbarrow just won't do it anymore. | |||||||
| Florida (E) | 2 | 10/22/2007 | Impressive victory in a hostile environment. Too much speed, talent and Tebow for Kentucky. | |||||||
| Kentucky (E) | 3 | 10/22/2007 | We know now they are for real. Can they continue to win after a tough loss to the Gators? | |||||||
| Auburn (W) | 4 | 10/22/2007 | After the showing against LSU, they can no longer be ignored. | |||||||
| South Carolina (E) | 5 | 10/22/2007 | Seems Darth Visor forgot to bring his Schwatrz to the game. Not only that, Spurrier may be the only quarterback on this team. | |||||||
| Alabama (W) | 6 | 10/22/2007 | The Third Saturday in Tidetober. What a smackdown! Tennessee's defense made JPW look like a Heisman contender. | |||||||
| Georgia (E) | 7 | 10/22/2007 | Game off. Rested against a dinged-up Florida next week. Could the trend of post bye-week victories in the SEC continue? | |||||||
| Arkansas (W) | 8 | 10/22/2007 | Casey Dick threw 3 touchdown passes. Read that again, I don't believe it either. | |||||||
| Vanderbilt (E) | 9 | 10/22/2007 | Earl Bennett gets the football 2 times and the Commodores win anyway, in Columbia. Give 'em credit for getting it done against the OBC. | |||||||
| Tennessee (E) | 10 | 10/22/2007 | [Computerized voice:] "Thank you for pressing the self-destruct button." | |||||||
| Mississippi State (W) | 11 | 10/22/2007 | Mississippi State just didn't have the skill or speed to compete with the 'Eers. | |||||||
| Mississippi (W) | 12 | 10/22/2007 | After the beat-down at home by Arkansas, their reward is to play the resurgent Auburn Tigers in Jordan-Hare. | |||||||
| Overall comments: The cream is rising to the top. Will it continue, or will it revert to strangeness? | ||||||||||

Poll
I would agree with your most of your picks.
I probably would have bumped UT up 1 or maybe 2 spots.
I also think it's difficult to know whether UK or Auburn belongs in that third spot but Auburn's loss to Miss St. drops them to 4th for now.

Special For GP
I think the top 4 teams in the SEC are very clear.(What order they are in is up for debate)
- Florida
- LSU
- Kentucky
- Auburn
I opted for UFA over LSU because of Tebow, and the Florida offense. Although LSU is an excellent defensive team, I don't think they can hold the Gators to under 30 points. And I really don'think they can score 30+ points verus Florida.
At the same time,a very good argument can be made for placing LSU on top.

I'm not sold ...
I'm not convince Bama could beat SC anywhere but in Tuscaloosa.

Yeah, but they won close games
In 2007, since the only thing that appears to matter is to simply win, I'm going to generally go with the resume when all else is equal. Florida lost to two good teams. USCe lost to a good team and a weak team (Vandy) and Alabama definitely lost to a weak team as well (FSU) but it was early in the season with a new coach, and the game was held in the state of Florida. It's very close but I think Alabama deserves the nod. If Wilson can put another game or two together like he had against Tennessee, Alabama becomes a very dangerous team.

Maybe ...
I don't go as much by resume as by feel for power polls. Alabama just doesn't feel like that good of a team to me. And I'm not quite ready to cop to the Saban hype.
Unfortunately, we won't know until early November whether I'm right or wrong.

I think we're only shades apart
I allow for the possibility of Wilson putting it all together again from here on out but it doesn't seem very likely, does it? Tennessee has made a lot of teams look better than they really are. Cal, Bama, and (gulp) yeah, even Florida, who I still think is the best team in the east -- but the Gators are not 59-20 good. Only against Tennessee do they pull that off.
During a normal season I'd agree totally with you, and even now I'm right there on the edge except for the wackiness that is the 2007 college football season. I have to say that if you win in this conference, you deserve the nod. It's only by a thin hair right now, but Alabama actually has a more impressive resume. That may change (probably will in fact) four days from now.

Good points, all ...
Alabama has proven that they can beat people in tough games, although I think Ole Miss was a bad call. Still, Bama fans must be pleased for now.

thanks GatorPilot I enjoy your opinions a lot.
I greatly appreciate it, and so do the majority of True Blue 'Cats I know as well.

SEC Power Poll
4. Kentucky
I know this is really low after they put up good numbers against Florida, but that's a game they should have won, and Woodson has gone flat the past few weeks. They're crashing back to Earth, and will likely have plenty more struggles to overcome in the next few weeks.--Todd, Roll Bama Roll
Woodson has gone flat the past few weeks??
Against FL #3 was 35-50 for 415 yards - 0 picks.
He engineered a total of 512 yards of offense against the Gators. If that is flat, I can't wait to see him on his game.

I know ...
Just the way it is. Todd will come around eventually.

I always said Miss. St. was the biggest game....
I'm sorry I haven't been on here in a while.
Like I said before don't give up on the Football 'Cats just yet my fellow 'Cat fans.
Really Tim Tebow was a one-man offensive show in last week's game. I even joked for a while that he automatically got my Heisman vote because of his terrific performance. Sadly he out-played Andre Woodson that game, and thus the reason Florida beat us.
But I still loved our effort and I am still very proud of this team. As always we never gave up and fought until the very end. We even scored a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. This 2007 team has far more pride in themselves than any other season since 1977 when I was just 7 years old.
Our offensive line struggled the worst it has all year IMHO. The Gators sacked him 6 times. But when he had time he was still deadly for the most part.
While we were able on occasion to run the football effectively this was also the worst game we had all year running the football. Still Dixon and especially Locke were able to do moderately well.
Again we struggled big time in the red zone especially in the 1st half. If we had done better as far as the red zone was concerned I think we actually could have pulled it out.
Seiber and esp. Masthay struggled too, Masthay having by far the worst game of the year. As far as kickoffs are concerned it's either a touchback or the ball at least on the oppositions 40 yard line. Our punt and kickoff coverage esp. kickoffs has been less than stellar this year.
We still just cannot break a long kickoff or punt
return this year to save our lives. The opposition has apparently found a weakness in it and still after 8 games we have yet to figure out what we're doing wrong. We've been close several times but not nearly close enough.
Our defense had its worst game of the year as well. We just had no answer at all for Tim Tebow and his passing attack. I think we done a darn good job of stopping UF's running attack even Tebow himself but we vary rarely got in Tebow's face and boy did he make us pay. Our secondary had by far it's worst game of the year as well.
And Florida didn't turn the ball over even once and didn't even fumble it one time. Our defense tried stripping Florida's RB's and Tebow of the ball countless times but credit the Gators as they just refused to do so.
Even though we played our 2nd poorest game of the year, South Carolina was our worst, we still lost to the defending national champions by just 8 points with the schedule, Florida's struggles, and everything else going against us.
I know it was going to be very tough for us to beat Florida after the Gators had a week off to prepare for us and after we had that 3OT victory over LSU.
Still I'm very proud of this team. If the Gators had played the week before like we did who knows the outcome might have been much different.
Now comes the game I've always felt was the game of the year for us, Mississippi State. It's one of those rare SEC games where we are heavily favored to win.
Sure Miss. St. beat Auburn at Auburn but have struggled somewhat since that win. Miss. St. didn't look good at all least week against WVU.
And I believe that actually help them as it makes them even more anxious to play us. They are even comparing this game to the game U of Kentucky played against them at Starkville last year. They feel if they can beat us then they can possibly go to a bowl game themselves.
And this game is far from a 100 percent lock for us U of Kentucky to win. Miss. St. just lost to us 13-7 two years ago at Commonwealth and 34-31 last year to us at Starkville. That gives them much needed confidence as they think they "know" that they can beat us. We cannot overlook them at all.
A lot is at stake for us even more so than them IMHO. That treasured 7th win which will lock us up in a bowl game even if we lose our last 3 games which I don't think we will to begin with. A share of the SEC East Title, which sadly we lose just about every tie-breaker right now since both our wins came against the SEC West and both our losses come against the SEC East. A New Year's Bowl Game, and most importantly a 9, 10, or even an 11 win season for us believe it or not.
Three keys to this very crucial game for us will be our attitute of whether we take them lightly or not, turnovers, and a fast start as usual.
We need to get in front against Miss. St. and bury them as quickly in the game as possible. We need to get in front at least by 10 points at the end of the 1st quarter. If we do that we will be fine the rest of the game IMHO.
Second is turnovers. We have only forced 1 turnover in the past two games against SEC powerhouses LSU and Florida and still beat LSU and lost by just a slim margin against Florida. Again we will be just fine if we don't turn the ball over at all on offense or special teams.
Last of all but certainly not least is our attitude in this game. Mississippi St. looks at this game every year as a game they feel they have a 50/50 shot of winning. They have come very close to doing just that the two years. And last year was our very best team ever until this year. Still they feel they have a legitimate shot at beating us. And they are justified because of the last two games.
I just don't see this U of Kentucky Football team overlooking Miss. St. this year thank God. Our team's attitude and leadership won't let us. In fact i think the last two close games against Miss. State will help us instead of hurt us because we know 100 percent they can beat us if we don't play our very best game. I think we will be just fine this year though. This is not even the same Kentucky team we had last year which was the best ever. We still have many goals left in front of us, and I just don't see us letting up any at all against Miss. St this year.
In my opinion we should be just fine Saturday. I love our chances against Mississippi State the 3rd time around. I'm very positive about this game at the present time. We have too much to play for to have a slip-up right now, and our team knows that 100 percent certain.
GO 'CATS! WE BELIEVE! SHOCK THE WORLD!
