GAMETIME: #18 Kentucky at Tennessee

Enough. We ruminate, we pontificate, we split into factions and come back again. All over a game whose outcome we cannot change. So we move on.

Tonight, the Cats face a new, if familiar, test: a road game at Tennessee.

This is a big game -- aren't they all, come this time -- but made larger by the Wildcats' tenuous grip on second place in the SEC East. A loss to UT puts the Cats in a fight to the finish with the surging Vols and the waning 'Dores of Vandy. A win leaves the Cats in better shape, especially with road trips to Bama, Vandy and Florida remaining.

But while we fret, per usual, our compadres over at Rocky Top Talk take a completely different approach to tonight's game, though they aren't too orange to see how easily we UK fans are pigeonholed:

Whether the current state of the Kentucky basketball program is due to a pact with an underlord or a fondness for flesh, the result is the same: Kentucky has been wandering aimlessly for what seems like an eternity in search of either its former self or its next scapegoat-flavored meal.

Are we that easily pegged? Guess so.

Regardless, it's a game the UK program needs, if only to shrug off Saturday's close loss and realize that the season isn't over.

Something tells me the players have been told this, even if they may not believe it or act like it.

So what will occur: Cats prevail? Cats can't shake the snide? Tennesee is too jacked up? Things start getting ugly or back to normalcy and looking good?

My guess is that jumpshots will tell the tale. For both teams. I'll admit to being nerved out.

As always, our man Truz gives the details you need to know before the game starts.

What to look for:
* I want it all. While the rest of the SEC might have gloated a bit when Tennessee, and head annoyer Bruce Pearl, tailspun for a month, the freefall is most definitely over. The Vols flirted with bubble territory, and could still use a few wins to solidify their tourney seed. Is Kentucky happy to just have played Florida close or will they be out for a statement?

* Wonder Twins Power. Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas combined for a 1-for-10 shooting day against Florida, and were generally unhelpful throughout. Perry's slump, with a few exceptions, is killing the club's early mo, if only because he won't stop shooting. How long before Tubby is forced to find other options -- either smaller or younger?

* Chris-mas?. You can all but throw out UK's near 20-point win at Rupp Arena now. Why? The Vols were without their leading scorer, heart and all-around dagger-producer, Chris Lofton. The Maysville native loves punking the Cats, so slowing him will be key for UK tonight.

Perry
Just MAKE THE CHANGE, Tubby.

Admit the kid is lost right now. Take the pressure off.

Unreal.

7-7
Homer calls already. At least they aren't FOULS on Morris.

Good pacing for UK right now. Just need to stay vigilant on D. Tennessee will shoot about 15-20 more shots tonight than the Cats.

Tie-up
Jasper and Morris both getting hacked, no calls. Should expect that, I suppose.

Getting HACKED
I mean, they are DIVERTING THE SHOTS by hacking the arms.

I don't generally whine about refs, but JIMINY.

Where is the ...
...Vigilance on defense?

How many backdoor layups are we going to give them? They clearly can't run right now, and Lofton is quiet.

Have got to find the D switch.

BTW, Coury...whew.

This is gonna be a LONG game.
Refs are determined to make this an "even" game. Cats need to adjust.

Lofton...
Gee, Tubby, maybe if Mike Porter doesn't know NOT to pull off the best shooter in the country.

This is going to get ugly at this rate.

GET WOO OUT OF THE GAME.

Here's a good idea...
WHY DON'T WE RECRUIT GUYS WHO WIN MR. BASKETBALL IN THIS STATE?

Jesus Christ, I am sick of watching Chris Fucking Lofton embarrass us because we just had to have Rajon Rondo.

Please
This is such a tired subject, man.

Can you imagine the ruckus if Tubby had chosen the unranked Lofton over a top 20 McD All-American?

C'mon. I agree it's tiresome to watch, but ANY other class and I'd agree. But he took chances on Carrier and Stockton and they were clearly wasted scholarships.

For what it's worth
I think getting snubbed by his home state is what's motivating Lofton to perform so well. He may not be the same player had he become a Wildcat.

Not looking good ...
Let's hope the famous "Tubby adjustments" happen again, cause otherwise, this team is in real trouble.

Road game Saturday at Bama? Yeesh.

Need a lot more from Crawford and Bradley.

Great shooting continues ...
1-for-7 from three means last three halves = 4-for-29.

Great stuff, guys.

I just
Don't understand this team.  No intensity.  No desire.  Lack of focus.

Again, the Vols went on a run when Tubby had a questionable five in, a la the Florida game.

I just don't get it.  Someone help me understand.

by piketaylor on Feb 13, 2007 7:52 PM EST reply actions

Don't worry...
Tubby is a basketball genius, a veritable Mozart of coaching. He'll figure it out.

Or they'll continue to run around like headless chickens when they're not stumbling through an offense that couldn't score against some high school teams in this state.

Definitely one of the two, though.

by Quietude on Feb 13, 2007 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

Blech.
You know, I really didn't think they'd come in so completely ... "eh".

Are we really so completely overindulgent that we really don't understand how basketball works?

I thought you had to be intense to win. Huh.

Lack of preparation.
That's all it is. And that falls squarely on the coaching staff, who obviously don't have anything approaching a connection with this team.

Hell, I'm not entirely sure Tubby's noticed that Bobby Perry's shooting about 1-324,000 over the past month.

Try to defend him all you want, but at the end of the day, the team's performance or lack thereof falls squarely on the shoulders of the head coach. That's what he gets paid for. And Tubby has done a lackluster job of working with the players he has, especially when it comes to adapting to their strengths and weaknesses.

This isn't Georgia or Tulsa, where 20 wins and a second-round NCAA tournament game every year will get an arena named after you when you retire. This the University of fucking Kentucky. This is the winningest program in basketball, seven times national champion, one of the most loved, hated and feared names in the entire sport. But you wouldn't know it to look at the teams that have worn the blue and white under Tubby.

by Quietude on Feb 13, 2007 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Or perhaps
maybe this team just needs to be down at the half to have any shot of winning.  Lord knows 20 point halftime margins don't do any good.

Regardless, it's going to take a MUCH MUCH better half to beat UT

by piketaylor on Feb 13, 2007 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

Earlier ...
I predicted UT would take 15-20 more shots than UK.

At the half, they have 9 more attempts, same percentage. Wonder why they're winning?

Either stop more shots or make more, one of the two.

sigh

And it begins again ...
 ... wow. Refs, huh?

Then Lofton. Can't beat both of them, apparently.

Brad Nessler:
"Tubby looks perplexed at times."

Those times would be between November and March, Brad.

I can't even blame this on the refs, although this is a screwjob worthy of Gerald Boudreaux and John Clougherty. This is just BAD COACHING.

C'mon Cats ...
God, these guys are heart attack inducing.
