With all of the big splashes in NBA free agency this summer, very few former Kentucky Wildcats have changed teams.
In an attempt to break back into the league, DeAndre Liggins is playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers Las Vegas Summer League team. Rajon Rondo left the Sacramento Kings to join the Chicago Bulls.
And now Terrence Jones is finalizing a contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. According to Shams Charania at The Vertical, the contract being finalized is only a one year deal. With all of the money being thrown out this year to free agents, and the salary cap going up again next year, this is a phenomenal opportunity for Jones to prove himself and get paid in a big way next summer.
In his two years with the Wildcats, Jones saw an improbable Final Four run and was a vital part of the 2011-2012 national championship team.
After being drafted 18th overall by the Rockets in 2012, Jones had a strong start with all indications that he would have a solid NBA career. In the 2013-2014 seasons, he started 71 games and averaged 12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The following season, however, was plagued with injuries and he was just able to play in 33 games.
Jones' fate was similar in 2015-2016. Between early injuries and an apparent loss of confidence by the coaching staff, his playing time was significantly diminished and he only got 11 starts in 50 games played.
Looking to revive his career, New Orleans seems like a great opportunity for Jones. He served as a great complement to Dwight Howard during his time in Houston, and playing alongside Anthony Davis could provide a similar scenario where Jones could thrive.
With very little depth at the power forward position (assuming Davis is playing center), Jones could come in and compete for a starting position right away.
And it provides Big Blue Nation with yet another team with multiple former Wildcats to cheer for.
