Pastner could make almost $3 million a year as a UK assistant next year

Pastner has not been fired...yet. My opinion is that the University of Memphis Athletic Department (UMAD) is trying to figure out how to buy him out. He has a contract through 2020 and would be due $10.6 million. The UMAD - showing the height of its ineptness - failed to but a mitigating clause in the contract - ie, a clause that would use any future job's salary to offset its liability. Interestingly, even without such a clause, there is a common law requirement that such future earnings offset the payout. However, the UMAD went one step further, deeming the payment "liquidated damages", thus nullifying the common law requirement to mitigate payments. Therefore, with as little as $400k a year from UK, Pastner could make $3 million a year as a UK assistant.

Seriously, I do believe Pastner will be gone. If Kenny Payne does get a much deserved head coaching job, Pastner would be a good addition. He is a highly regarded recruiter but not sure he would be a good "big man" coach.

In any event, I have always held that some of Cal's issues at UM were due to a bumbling AD. Although Pastner's contract was under a new athletic director, it just shows, imo, the unsophisticated nature of the UMAD. If interested, here is an article from today's paper (it was posted Friday but I did not see it until reading the paper version today - yes, I still get a paper paper).

Two little words could add up big if Pastner gets the ax at Memphis
