THIS WEEK IN SOCCER: Women split opening series, men play a lot of guys I guess

Clive Rose

The University of Kentucky Women's Association Football team kicked off All-American Arin Gilliland's final collegiate season in earnest this past weekend, losing 4-1 to Washington on Friday but then totally redeeming themselves with a 1-2 overtime win against Seattle University on Sunday.

The Lady Huskies, who probably don't like being called The Husky Ladies, dropped two goals on the Cats in the first twenty minutes of play on Friday. Despite Gilliland's obvious badassery in getting one back in the 25th minute, U-Dub picked up another goal to close out the half, and then added another in the second half to salt the game away.

The Lady Cats evened up their season ledger on Sunday, though, with a 1-2 win against lesser known Seattle University. The game was tied 1-1 going into overtime when junior Cara Ledman picked up a golden goal and the win for Kentucky. Golden goals? Golden goals.

The men, meanwhile, played their final exhibition of the year at the new UK Soccer Complex against everyone's favorite Georgia sports team, Georgia State. Despite improving in the shots department (19!), the Cats only had 5 on target, all saves. The good news was Coach Cedergren got a lot of minutes out of a lot of players. The bad news was we still lost to Georgia Freakin' State. Please, please please let this not be a sign of things to come, Soccer Cats.

ON TO THE WEEKEND:

Men: at Wright State (wrong school) on Friday at 7pm, then hosting Belmont on Sunday at 5:00. Why no, it won't be ridiculously hot at that time of day!

Women: Hosting Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion on Friday at 7:30, then hosting Ohio's Bobcat Ladies at 2:00 p.m. Come cure your UT-Martin hangover with a double helping of soccer!
