THIS WEEK IN SOCCER: Women can score, Men can't

Try and tear yourself away from Tyler Ulis and Patrick Towles for two seconds (if you're a speed reader) because it's time to talk Kentucky Soccer! The Women wrapped up their exhibition season in Not the Bahamas with a 1-3 win at No. 11 Portland Pilots over the weekend, while the Men played their first game in The Concrete Jungle of Highland Heights against Northern Kentucky to a scoreless (and nearly shotless) draw. In front of nearly 2,000 fans, no less. For an exhibition. Don't let anyone tell you there's nothing to do in Campbell County, folks.

The Women's team has a chance to have a pretty special season, having been picked to finish 4th in the SEC by people who pay more attention to SEC women's soccer than I do. Beating Portland at their house is a good start. The Men may struggle a bit offensively this season, which isn't really anything new, but defensively they were solid against NKU, only giving up two shots all game. The problem was they only had four themselves. "Hard to score when you don't shoot," said Russ Smith, probably.

This coming weekend we've got HOT SOCCER ACTION coming at you: The women start regular season play against the Washington Lady Huskies on Saturday in Seattle, so unless you happen to be up in the Pacific Northwest, you probably won't see that game. BUT, the men play on Georgia State Saturday night at 7:00 in their final preseason exhibition in Lexington at the new soccer complex, so head up there and have some fun before crushing it at Suggins's that night. GO SOCCER CATS!
