Garrett Johnson WR
West Orange High School
Winter Garden, FL (Orlando Metro)
The 5' 9" 160 lb. wide receiver committed to Kentucky on July 27th. His commitment was a head scratcher for some in Big Blue Nation when it was announced. He didn't have a big name, and it was surprising the coaching staff would accept the commitment of a middling three star a full six months before National Signing Day. After a great senior season, the coaches' eye for talent was validated yet again. Johnson was named as the #5 player in the Orlando Sentinel's Central Florida Super 60 and also named the 56th best player in Florida. He did all of this against top-shelf talent in central Florida.
Johnson does not have blazing speed according to SPARQ; however, his highlight tape strongly suggests he "plays faster" than his reported forty time. Johnson seems to read blocks well coming off screens (at least according to his anecdotal highlight tape), and that will be important in Neal Brown's offense. My guess: he is a redshirt candidate since UK already has depth at the "slot receiver" position. Coach Brown has stated Johnson will likely play Ryan Timmons position of H-Back in UK's offense. He claims offers from Arizona, Boston College, Northwestern and Iowa St. Additionally, it sounds like Florida got involved with Johnson late in the process. Johnson was recruited by Chad Scott and Tommy Mainard.
