Kentucky Men's Soccer is set to close out the exhibition season tonight against the Northern Kentucky University Norse. FULL DISCLOSURE: I went to NKU for law school. I hate NKU. It is the worst.
Make no mistake, though, NKU really likes soccer, they're pretty good at it, and they, like most other smaller schools in the state, relish any opportunity to beat the Cats at just about anything. Just ask the National Trial Advocacy Team (woo hoo Norse). In last season's exhibition game against Kentucky, Norse fans filled their little concrete stadium to 200 over capacity to watch the two teams reach a 2-2 draw. I think we can probably expect the same treatment tonight. NKU doesn't have football, so any chance those kids get to stay on campus for something other than class is a unique experience for them, along with seeing the sun and eating something other than cheese coneys.
Kentucky's goal in this match should be to try and find a way to score goals, first and foremost, and then try to vet as many of its young players to find a strong starting eleven for the regular season. NKU, meanwhile, is trying to build on a fairly successful inaugural season in Division 1 and defend their home turf, where they've only lost once.
