Kentucky Wildcats Afternoon Quickies: First UK Scrimmage Edition

USA TODAY Sports

News and commentary from around the Big Blue Internet. The first scrimmage of the fall is in the books, some good and some bad to be reported. Blake Bone, 4-star WR and UK target, to announce in two weeks. More.

Yesterday, the football team scrimmaged, and the defense clearly had the upper hand. It didn't exactly dominate the offense, but was apparently the clear winner of the day.

Mark Stoops said that this will be an important factor in the determination of a starting quarterback, but didn't indicate it would be dispositive.

I hate to hear about the dropped passes and turnovers, and Stoops said that nobody stood out on defense, the whole unit just played well.

Neil Brown said that the offense came out and played well early, but as the scrimmage wore on, the defense was better. He said also that the run blocking early was good. Jojo Kemp was singled out as making plays. He noted that we had some drops today. He really had nothing to say about the quarterbacks except to note that Reese Phillips had "as good a day as anybody."

He said further that nobody seemed to stand out at wideout today, and he said that the picks were due to poor throws. Brown says that we are a lot better now than in the spring, and that from today on, we have to figure out "what we're good at, and who our best players are."

This should be very interesting.
