Kentucky Wildcats: Morning Quickies -- Bastille Day Edition

Tyson Gay has tested positive for a banned substance. - Ian Walton

News and commentary from around the Big Blue Internet. John Calipari continues to recruit for 2014, watching players at the Nike Peach Jam. Mark Stoops gets an article about his past. Analyst Jerry Meyer predicts a Fab Five for UK in 2014. More.

Today is Bastille Day in France and many French-speaking countries. We wish our French friends and neighbors a happy one.

Tweet of the Morning:

From what I've been hearing about him, I think that's a good idea.

Your Quickies:

Kentucky football
  • Nice work by Kyle Tucker. [Hank]

I think this says a lot about Mark Stoops:

“He’s one of the all-time great people that I’ve ever had the honor to coach,” said Hayden Fry, the Hawkeyes’ Hall of Fame former coach. “Very intelligent, great personality, a leader on the football team. He wasn’t real large — probably 170 pounds then — and yet he played like he weighed 200. All those Stoops boys were that way. It was in their bloodline.

This is definitely an article you should read. It is the typical sort of biographical piece we need to get a better understanding of our new football coach.

  • Running back depth takes a hit with the injury of Josh Clemons. There is hope, though, that the injury is not as serious as we fear.

  • Saturday Down South says that when it comes to Kentucky, take the over in the total wins department:

I feel some good vibrations coming from Lexington this year, but it’s still not going to be pretty. However, with an offense that should score points and a defensive-minded coach, I like the Cats to pull the over. I’ve bought into Blue – hook, line and sinker.

Kentucky basketball
  • Jerry Meyer predicts a fab five for Kentucky for 2014, including Stanley Johnson, Emmanuel Mudiay, Rashad Vaughn, and Trey Lyles to join Karl Towns.

I have a very good feeling about Mudiay, Johnson and Lyles. Not as sure about Vaughn.

  • With tax revenue off the table for the Rupp Arena renovation, it looks like corporate naming rights are the most likely option. As long as the name of Adolph Rupp remains associated with the arena, I can probably live with that. Unless, of course, it is YUM! Brands. I'd rather not have the upgrade than have it in any way associated with the Louisville Cardinals. Hat tip: Aaron's Blog

  • More on Kentucky's Dominican Republic pipeline.

  • Coach Cal was watching 2015 prospect Charles Matthews yesterday, along with Rick Pitino.

  • Dirk Minnefield had this to say about Aaron and Andrew Harrison:

"They're everything people say they are. You look out here right now at the guys who look like they're playing hard. They don't touch the twins. They're at another level of competitiveness. So is Julius Randle (another UK recruit from Texas).

  • The question is, can Kentucky strike a good bargain on the upgraded Rupp Arena without jumping the shark like Louisville did with the KFC YUM! Center? At least we aren't talking about soaking the taxpayers.

  • I'm buying most of the hype, but I'm not going down the path that 2013-14 UK can go undefeated. Still, I'm not convinced college basketball is going to be significantly better next year than in the last two or three.
