Kentucky Wildcats: Morning Quickies - Grand Strand Edition

I'll be chillin' here in Cherry Grove for the next week. - bettyx1138

News and commentary from around the Big Blue Internet. SEC voting on league-wide drug testing today. Shabazz Muhammad's father indicted on federal charges. Julius Mays talks about his time at Kentucky. More.

Today, I head to the heart of Gamecock country for my annual vacation to the Grand Strand. Blogging will be hit or miss, but I should be able to get up at least the Quickies most days, and of course, we do have other authors who will still be entertaining you.

Tweet of the Morning:

Heh. I wonder if Aaron Craft is coming?

Your Quickies:

Kentucky football
  • Kentucky is getting a lot of defensive back commitments, and needs them all, according to Kyle at Wildcat Blue Nation.

  • John Adams at GoVolsExtra notices that Mark Stoops is making hay in Ohio:

The Stoops name still resonates when it comes to Ohio football. And first-year Kentucky coach Mark Stoops is taking advantage of it.

Indeed. A lot of that is due to Vince Morrow, though. Stoops gets credit, but Morrow is doing most of the grunt work and getting great results.

  • Speaking of Vince Morrow, Larry Vaught has a piece on how he came to be at Kentucky. It's kind of a different route than most coaches, and an interesting story.

Kentucky basketball
  • Marcus Owens of TheDraftReview.com talks to KyCatStats about the NBA Draft prospects of the Kentucky players this year.

  • Dime Magazine talks to Julius Mays, the other "one and done" player at Kentucky. Here's a taste:

"And if Coach Cal wasn’t getting the right response from them, I felt like it was my job as the older guy to be that leader and carry coach’s message to the other guys. I feel like toward the end of the season I really became comfortable in that leadership role, but I probably waited too late to get into that because I was not totally comfortable at first with my on-court role and our system."

  • Seems like 2014's Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones really mean it when they present themselves as a package deal.

  • Now the abuse charges against coaches have predictably wandered into the area of verbal abuse. John Calipari, watch your language. No more MF'ing players on national TV, or the PC police will be at your door.

  • Shabazz Muhammad's father has been indicted for federal bank fraud and conspiracy. Yikes.

Other news
  • From the department of "what you don't know can kill you," a huge asteroid is about to do a near-Earth flyby, and most people are blissfully unaware of what could happen if one of these big daddys decide to join with our planet. If this particular rock, which is over a mile wide, were to hit the earth, the human race would probably be extinguished from existence -- The Extinction Level Event of the film, Deep Impact.

If you're wondering if we can do anything about it, the answer is, "Not a thing." Seems like changing that might, you know, be a good thing to put as a priority. Just sayin'.
