2013 NCAA Tournament: Championship Game Open Thread

Tonight, the 2013 championship will be decided, and neither contestant has held the trophy in a long time.

Tonight, the Louisville Cardinals and the Michigan Wolverines take to the floor of the Georgia Dome to figure out who is the champion of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

This is one of those rare games where the strength of each team is the opposite of the other. Michigan is the best offensive team in the nation, and Louisville the best defensive team. The unstoppable force meets the immovable object.

The key to a Louisville victory, in my view, is to avoid fouls on their two guards. I don’t think that Michigan can effectively keep them out of the lane, which means that to the extent Louisville can offend during the best of times, they should be able to do so.

Michigan, on the other hand, must force Louisville to play them honestly and get open shots for their outstanding shooters. Trey Burke has to break out of his slump and become a threat from the arc.

In the end, a few possessions are likely to decide this game, and the officials will have a lot to do with how the game is played. A tight whistle greatly favors the Wolverines, and a lose one favors Louisville. If it is close at the end, it will favor the Cardinals, because just as in the game Louisville played versus the Wichita St. Shockers, the officials will tend to swallow their whistle in the last five minutes of the game.

So this is it. Enjoy it if you can, do something else if you can’t. May the best team win.
