Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

News and commentary from around the Big Blue Internet. Digger Phelps diagnosed with cancer. Kentucky high on list of 2014 recruits. Bat Cats finally break losing streak, look for series win. Andrew Wiggins still getting buzz. More.

ESPN analyst and former Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Digger Phelps has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. We at A Sea of Blue wish coach Phelps a speedy recovery and complete victory over the disease. I’ll be keeping him in my prayers.

Tweet of the Morning:

How can you not be impressed with what Stoops has done so far?

Your Quickies:

Kentucky football
  • Kentucky interested in Bowling Green’s Nacarius Fant. Scout and 247 Sports rate him as a 3 star. Rivals and ESPN haven’t rated him. The offers will come, apparently, once the season starts. (Hank) VarsityPreps

  • Some good information on UK recruits, including Mike Edwards, Darius West, Derek Kief, Nacarius Fant, Drew Barker and others Free info to boot. (Hank) Kentucky Blue Sports News

  • Bud Elliot at SB Nation says 5-star football recruits are "roughly 200X more likely to be a first round pick" than 2-star recruits. Seems like a no-brainer to me. (Via Hank) SB Nation Recruiting Twitter feed

  • Denzel [Ware] still has UK on his list. Elam picks up a Hoosier offer. Edwards gets some mail from UK. (Hank) KKSR

  • Larry Vaught confirms some rumors. (Hank) Larry Vaught

  • A Q&A I did with The Saturday Edge. We talk about the biggest takeaways from spring practice, which relative unknowns could break out, and more. The Saturday Edge

Kentucky basketball
  • 2014’s Tyus Jones cuts his list to seven, including Kentucky. ZagsBlog

  • Kentucky fans opine on what Andrew Wiggins means to the Kentucky incoming recruiting class. One guy even got all five of the Michigan Fab Five, something I struggle with myself (I can never remember Ray Jackson). CCollegeSpun

  • Kentucky faces Louisville on December 28th next year. Larry Vaught

  • Mater Dei’s Stanley Johnson, a 2014 high-school stud, has Kentucky on his final list. Kentucky Kernel

  • Draft Express tells Larry Vaught that Archie Goodwin has every chance to solidify himself as a first-round pick. Vaught’s Views -- DDraft Express

  • ESPN’s Paul Biancardi says James Young is "a natural scorer." You can never have too many of those on a team, I say. Vaught’s Views

  • Calipari announces online store for coaching drills.

Other UK sports
  • SEC baseball update via Roll Bama Roll. UK had been in the throes of an epic collapse, losing seven in a row before taking the series opener off Ole Miss last night before losing the nightcap to even the series. The rubber match is tonight at 7:30.

  • The Kentucky Women’s golf team has an LPGA qualifier coming in in signee Haley Mills. She’s also pretty easy on the eyes.

College football
  • Peter Berkes at SB Nation has more on the new College Football Playoff. In fact, SB Nation has an entire story streamm dedicated to it.

  • In SB Nation’s latest longform by Robert Weintraub, we get a look back at the original dual-threat quarterback, Reggie Collier. Here’s a taste:

Today, no number of imaginary girlfriends on the Internet would be enough to cause a 6’4 QB with a big arm who ran a 4.5 40-yard dash, as Collier did, to fall out of the top five draft picks. But back in ’83, NFL teams still put skin color under "negatives" on their draft boards.

  • If you followed the NFL draft, Notre Dame’s fake Linebacker [Manti Te’o] (as Alabama clearly showed) wasn’t chosen in the first round and I am sure the media is heartbroken. (Hank) UUSA Today

  • SEC rules in the first round of the NFL draft, seeing 12 picked and tying the ACC’s record from back in 2007. NBC Sports

College basketball
  • Is Andrew Wiggins the missing piece for UNC’s national title aspirations? Well, he would certainly help, but I don’t think it’s near enough. Rant Sports

  • 3-point shot. ESPN

  • Doug McDermott coming back wasn’t really that much of a surprise to me, although it could wind up costing him a few bucks. Still, not a bad call. ESPN

  • So UNLV is going to build a statue of Jerry Tarkanian? I wonder if it will have a towel in its mouth? NBC Sports

Other sports news
  • I heard about this the other day. Storm Cat, the great sire of many winning horses, has died. Herald-Leader

  • NCAA Karma? (Hank) UUSA Today

Other news
  • Programming note: I won’t be dong my usual program segment with Larry Glover Live tonight, as Petra and I have an evening out on the town.
  • Some of you may have noticed a slight format change to the quickies. That's due to some new software I'm using to make writing them less painful and time consuming. Hope you like it, because I certainly like the hour it saves me every day.
