Kentucky Wildcats: Basketball Rotation--My Uneducated Take

USA TODAY Sports

Basic Rotation – I see James Young as 6th man because he will be back up guard and wing player. He will back up both Harrisons as Aaron will be primary point back up. He will also back up Alex Poythress though Julius Randle could slide down to 3 if Coach Cal decides to play 3 bigs. Dakari Johnson could wind up starting over Willie Cauley-Stein.

1) Andrew Harrison (G)

2) Aaron Harrison (G)

3) Alex Poythress (W/P)

4) Julius Randle (P/W)

5) Wille Cauley-Stein (P)

6) James Young (G/W)

7) Dakari Johnson (P)

8) Marcus Lee (P/w)

G-Guard W- Wing P-Post w- Doubtful wing (Primary position 1st)

Additional Rotation (Foul Trouble etc...) I see no way that Jarrod Polson doesn’t get some meaningful relief minutes in the first half of games. He needs to be the 1 -3 minutes of foul (or breath) relief. Jon Hood may be used that way on the wing as well. No way to know if Willis gets any meaningful minutes this year but could occasionally be used as a "WIltjer-type" weapon. (What Clark Kellogg might call an Allen Wrench—used for 1 purpose, shooting)

9) Jarrod Polson (G)

10) Jon Hood (W/G)

11) Derek Willis (P/W)

12) Dominique Hawkins (G)

Overall, an eight player rotation I think is ideal. I also think having a capable 9 and 10 is very useful. I personally like spelling players and playing subs against tired starters so our starters can come back in and dominate. This is more an NBA philosophy and it is NOT the way Cal thinks so I don’t look for it unless fouls dictate otherwise.
