Kentucky Wildcats Afternoon Quickies: SEC East Edition

News and commentary from around the Big Blue Internet. Volleyball continues to win in the SEC, defeating Mississippi St. Alabama enforcing Saban's complaints about students leaving games early. More.

The SEC East is a muddled mess after this Saturday. That's nothing new, really.

Tweet of the Morning:

Help is on the way.

  • A gimpy Connor Shaw's heroics in Columbia, Missouri rallied the Gamecocks past the Tigers. If you didn't before, now you know why I would pick Shaw over any other Gamecock, including Jadeveon Clowney, if I could take any player off their team.

Some good news for Kentucky fans is that Drew Barker is very similar to Shaw in style of play, which is why Steve Spurrier coveted him. I'm not saying Barker is going to come to UK and step into the starting quarterback role — Shaw didn't do that, either — but it's just one more thing to keep in mind when people say that "help is on the way" at Kentucky.

  • Alabama brutalized Tennessee almost as badly as they did Kentucky. That tells me we have a chance against the Vols.

  • Alabama is enforcing Saban's complaints about students leaving early by taking away a block of seats reserved for fraternities and sororities and opening them up to all students.

Connor Link at KSR wonders if Calipari should do the same thing. I will just offer this — I have never left a UK game early. Ever. Maybe it's just me.

  • Mississipi St. community For Whom The Cowbell Tolls laments the decline of the atmosphere at Davis-Wade Stadium.

  • Where the SEC East stands after South Carolina's upset of Mizzou. This includes numerous tie-breaker scenarios.

  • The Wacky SEC East. Analysis of the SEC results from this weekend.

  • SB Nation's college All-American (preseason) teams. No Kentucky players on the first team? Well, honestly I don't care much at all, Kentucky is largely loathed by my fellow-bloggers and there are lots of legitimate excuses to exclude them. In fact, there is only one Kentucky player on the first through third teams.I have a feeling there will be quite a few first-teamers on the final version of the team.

  • The only teams worth ranking at the moment.

  • Players to watch in the OVC this season.

  • You've all heard this. I'm glad, of course, I don't want Louisville to have a "but we didn't have ..." excuse when we drub them in December.

With that said, how wildly at odds is this with Pitino's proclamation that Chane Behannan was unlikely to be able to return? I was kind of persuaded by the stark terms of his last take, but it seems it was just another Pitino dissimulation.

  • The new rule changes are not suggestions, or judgment calls, they are cut and dried:

t's not a guideline," (Big 12 officials supervisor Curtis) Shaw said. "They've moved it from the back of the rule book to the front. There is no judgment. If you do these things, it's a penalty."

These are needed changes, but there is going to be a learning curve. I have a feeling that Rick Pitino is going to be hurt more than most, given the extremely physical style of defense played by the Cardinals.

  • When and how to tweet an athlete. The cruelty and sickness of players never ceases to amaze me. Most of this is solid advice.

My advice is simple: Be nice. Period. If you are going to condemn something he said, do it nicely. If you can't be a good human being tweeting, just don't tweet.
