Could Khalid Thomas become as dangerous as Randall Cobb?
Joker Phillips & Co. strike again in the Sunshine State, this time to nab Khalid Thomas from Tallahassee, Florida, brother of Kadeem Thomas, who committed to Kentucky back in September of last year. Khalid is a running back/athlete and Kadeem is a linebacker.
Khalid, an All-Big Bend selection as a junior, said he picked the Wildcats over offers from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Miami, South Carolina, North Carolina State, USF and Texas Tech.
That's about as impressive an offer list as you are likely to see on any recent Kentucky recruit, and a significantly more impressive one than his brother had before committing to Kentucky. The question now becomes, can Phillips hold on to this young man, because if any of the aforementioned schools really want him, there will be pressure on the young man to change his mind. It won't help if Kentucky has the kind of season that many are predicting for this year. Let's hope blood is thicker than the bench of a more storied team.
One thing is for sure -- despite a slow start in 2013 recruiting, Joker Phillips has really stepped up his game, and has plucked several players from the talent-rich state of Florida, a place that Kentucky had largely been either ignoring or was just unsuccessful in.
In case you overlooked it, Khalid is ranked #25 for Rivals.com in the athlete category, and carries a Rivals rating of 5.7, just one notch below the 4* category. This kid looks like a football player, although he looks a bit undersized for an SEC running back. If he can catch the football, he could well wind up in the slot a la Randall Cobb.
This is a very big get for Joker Phillips, and hopefully his recruiting momentum will continue. If we see some development this year in the the offensive line and backfield skill positions, Kentucky could well have a very dangerous offense for 2013.
