This part is not so fun for the players. Seeing fans in the stands makes it worth while.
Kentucky Wildcats Football. I read comments time and time again from fans wanting a better football program at Kentucky. A program where winning is the norm and the 'big name' coach comes in and resurrects the program to a true elite status. They want a program where winning is expected and losing is not an option. Those comments always turn to the fact that that 'big name' coach is not coming to Kentucky. But why?
Many believe it is because Kentucky is known as a basketball school. Many also believe that even winning a lot more will not even change that fact. Lore returns to the days of Bear Bryant and Adolph Rupp as a prime example. The story is always told about the gift of a lighter to Bear Bryant, while Adolph Rupp, in turn, receives a Cadillac. Jon Scott has an article that debunks that story, but few choose to believe the details.
It is not unreasonable to want that 'big named' coach to come to Kentucky. Most of us want to have fun watching our team compete against another team. And of course, winning is usually a lot more fun. Losing doesn't always have to be the end of the world though. Okay, maybe I just lost about half of my reading audience, but wait ... there's more.
We, the members of the BBN, have to step in, stake our claim to being the greatest fans, and make our fandom heard. We must speak out with support. Not by always complaining at how we think the program is/always will be doomed, but how we know we are the Big Blue Nation and blue matters to us. Not showing up in the stands for the games might send a message to the powers that be, if you're a 'Bama faithful, but that attitude will not work so well if you are a Wildcat fan. It just screams the message that Kentucky is and will forever be a basketball school.
This attitude is something only the members of the BBN can start to change. For instance, how can we expect change for the better of Kentucky football when we allow them to schedule games around Keeneland's fall meet? Why can't we demand that Keeneland set their fall schedule around the Kentucky football schedule? I believe that's how it would work in Alabama. Aren't we the BBN?! We have loud voice!
I'm not asking you to support anyone or anything against your will. I am asking you to support the Wildcats of Fall, to the end, to prove you want the football program to be all it can be. It is not fair to blame someone else when we have a part in it too. Think about, we may actually have the power to change it. A full stadium speaks louder than a half empty one and I guarantee the team will appreciate it more than you may realize. Our players deserve our support, regardless of how you view our coaching staff at this time. Get behind the team and cheer loud!
The bottom line is that we need to speak up in volumes. Allow Keeneland's attendance numbers to dwindle because we are going to attend the football game first and I guarantee we will be seen around the nation as serious football fans. The message will start to spread that we, the members of the BBN, take football seriously. That we always support our boys in blue, and that we are totally devoted to also becoming known as a true blue fan base in football. Then, and only then, will we be eligible to demand the powers that be bring us everything we deserve as supportive fans. Remember, We Are the BBN, #WeAreUK! Let's prove it!
