Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Calhoun is dealing with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal which places pressure on the spinal column. We wish him a quick, full, and complete recovery from this painful and potentially life-changing problem.

Can't stand Calhoun......hate to see this happening to him.....

sometimes I wonder just how much of a toll this profession takes, and how much of it is just random.

A lot of stress involved, and I have always heard that stress is one of the leading contributors to major medical problems.

Spinal stenosis can place pressure on a spinal nerve root

as it leaves the vertebra. Vertebrae have little passages through which the spinal nerve roots pass. Osteoarthritis can narrow these passages, compressing sensory and motor nerves that innervate the legs. It can be most painful and disabling. Sounds like Coach will need surgery (carpentry) to create more space in these openings and maybe to fuse 2 or 3 levels for stability. Back surgeries have a poor track record of success. I feel for the guy.

I know this is going to sound bad :(

My first thought was that Calhoun was pulling a Coach K and bailing on his team before all the losses start piling up. I know this is a serious situation but I couldn’t help it. It just popped out.

I do hope he finds some relief, either through surgery or time off his feet.

kydamcat, ...

that “Calhoun was pulling a Coach K” was my first thought, too. :-)

If he has to have surgery, even if successful, it’s unlikely he will return as head coach, imo. The post surgery physical therapy can be as painful as the original condition.

I have an extra lower vertebrae, 5 not 4

And I asked about fusion 20 years ago (too short to have an extra);-) A wise doctor (retired from the Air Force) told me as long as you can walk, NEVER have optional back surgery as things only get worse from there. This comment makes me so glad I thought he was correct.

i don't wish him a quick, full and complete recovery

i hope it’s a protracted recovery that forces retirement. college basketball will be better for it. i don’t wish him any pain or harm, just wish him away from college ball. like Knight I think he is a cancer to men’s b-ball.

I have kleptomania,
but when it gets bad,
I take something for it.
