What to expect in the SEC Women's Tournament this weekend?? Let's see after the break...
Second Round: UK will face the winner of the Florida/Auburn game. Not a ton of stuff to talk about this game with the exception that UK has already beaten these teams at every turn this year. Florida went down twice to UK, and Auburn once. However, Florida does not go away quietly and I expect them to take Auburn in the first round. Facing Florida is always difficult, no matter the venue. that game will be played at noon on Friday, on Fox Sports Network.
Even though the team does not have the luxury of looking ahead, we are not bound by that rule so let's take a look at the following rounds. Should UK get past the Florida/Auburn winner, I believe we will face the winner of a tough matchup between Arkansas/LSU. Arkansas won't quit, and LSU can pound you inside until you simply are too sore and tired to keep up, as they did with UK the first time they played. Either of these teams are dangerous for vastly different reasons. arkansas has outside shooting as well as slashing guard play, and again, LSU is just big and mean. Arkansas is prone to some mistakes though and I don't think they will bump LSU off, which puts UK straight in the way of the Bayou Bengalettes.
Another game with LSU is not what I would have wished on UK from any standpoint whatsoever. However, if you are going to be the woman, you have to beat the woman, so UK must find a way to overcome their physicality. It will take speed and it will take playing harder than they did the first time they met. But in a year when UK knocks off Duke, Tennessee, Louisville, and South Carolina at home and away, not to mention that SEC Title, anything is not only possible, but can be done. UK wins this one in a squeaker.
That puts us in the SEC Tournament Championship game again against our Arch Nemesis, those Lady Volunteers. That name is deceptive by they way, if they were truly Volunteers, they would be overseas in the military or something. Anywhere but here being a thorn in our sides. This year though, things are different. This year, WE are the SEC Reg. Season Champs. WE are the #1 Seed in the SEC Tourney, and this year WE will be the favorites after avenging that LSU loss. So this year, WE win. WE become SEC Tourney and Reg. Season Champs and regain that #2 seed we had locked into the NCAA's until that 3 game stretch from Hades. This season is about redemption folks. This season we right some old wrongs, and this season we become a true force in SEC and NCAA Women's Basketball.
So that is the tourney in a nutshell. Do you still have to watch? You betcha. Speaking of which, I am looking for someone to handle the live game thread on Saturday afternoon. My girls have a tournament and I will not be available for that game. So if anyone is interested, please let me know on or before Friday. I can probably ask Glenn, but I would like for it to be someone who has been watching the games anyway, in case he is not available.
